  1. I would have two cups of coffee waiting for minor league starters, one for Gonsalves just after the All Star break, and one for Felix Jorge shortly after that. Both guys need to see what the show looks like, and both guys could be stashed in the pen, depending how they handle the extra pressure of big crowds, and hitters that don't bite on minor league junk balls.
  2. Could be the trick for Gibson is to have Duffey, Rogers and Kintzler ready to go for each his awesome 5-inning starts.
  3. Back to Nik Turley, his first three games give us little idea whether he will be any good in the majors. What we do know is that he was dominating in AA, and that when he appeared before big crowds for the first time, he looked very tense, and his pitches were all over the place. No way would he have dominated in the minors will that scattered pitching chart. Like a lot of rookies, Nik Turley may need to bounce up and down a few times before we really know if he's got the stuff to make it. That's just the way it goes with rookies. Remember Berrios.
  4. Your original observations were proved correct. Kintzler has gum wrapper command of his cutter and his two-seamer on the outside corner. It's not mid-90's heat, but it's enough to freeze a lot of hitters. He may not be a "long-term" closer, but Brandon Kintzler is a surprisingly good closer...for now.
  5. After seeing Saturday's game, I'm as convinced as ever that Kyle Gibson has the stuff to be a dominant ace in the major leagues. What's missing is Jack Morris's attitude. Sometimes he'll pitch inside, but sometimes he gets passive, too nice. Sometimes he'll throw his change up for strike one, but not enough. You see that beautiful downward plane, that's got to produce tons of ground outs, but he doesn't throw enough strikes to make batters swing. On the other hand, we all wish our pitchers got calls on strike three that were four to six inches outside the zone, as Kluber was getting. What an embarrassing day for that umpire. Does the league make them review their games? I hope so. He should spend the rest of the day with a red face. Meanwhile, Gibson does appear to be rallying from his early-season slump. Why he should need to re-learn the art of pitching at this point in his career, I have no idea. No pitcher can succeed on stuff alone. You have to play the game.
  6. From the article I gather the injury is repairable and the prognosis is good. Why the doomy headline? It sounds like the young man will be back with a full recovery in about a year.
  7. Stephen Gonsalves talks about his latest start almost exactly the way you'd want a major league pitcher to do. Strategy, tactics, what pitches are working. This guy's got the mind of a good mlb starter.
  8. Bert Mejia looks like he's going to be a very good big league pitcher, but it could take a while for him to find his best game. Could be that he's over-striding a bit, causing his stuff to ride high. When the mound was wet towards the end of his day, I noticed on the last couple batters he shortened his stride, and suddenly his pitches were zinging in at the knees, a far more effective altitude. Tie a rope on his ankles? Worked for Rocky Marciano, by gum. He was a very dangerous individual.
  9. Exactly. I was hoping Mauer said that to him. "Keep it knee high or lower, kid."
  10. I think I see why Hildenberger got the call. That change-up is going to embarrass a lot of major league batters. I hope he throws a million of them. Way to set 'em down, Trevor!
  11. Here comes gigantic Trevor Hildenberger. At just under 20 feet tall, Trevor has a pronounced downward plane to his 155 mph fastball. The catcher is wearing a specially padded 4-inch thick glove to catch Hildenberger's first pitch...
  12. Great play, but Santana was safe by a whisker.
  13. I suspect Mejia may be better than that. His stuff could play well enough to be a semi-ace, like a good #2 starter. If he really got himself in rock-climbing American Ninja Warrior shape...but no.
  14. Why was Mejia grimacing after that last strikeout? Worries me a bit. When the rain started, it looked like he shortened up his stride a little, maybe to avoid slipping. Suddenly his pitches were coming in lower.
  15. This is where Molitor says to Mejia, "Kid, we need to rest the bullpen. You're in it to the end." He he.
  16. I wasn't worried. No problem... Line drive for out 3, bases loaded.
  17. “Mitch Garver is my favorite though, we have always been on the same page whether it be in Fort Myers, the Fall League, or Chattanooga. He has a great feel for how a hitter is feeling in the box, what they are looking for, and how to exploit it. He knows how to get a lot of different kinds of hitters out, and I'm very comfortable throwing to him. Obviously it helps that he threw out close to 50% of attempted base stealers this season. All these guys are so good at controlling the running game that it helps a pitcher worry less about the guys on bases, and focus on the guy in the box.” How can you not like a guy that tries to drag his buddy with him into the bigs?
  18. There has to be more to this story. Melotakis was one of the better arms on the verge of getting a cup of coffee. Now they simply cut him? On the face of it, this make zero sense. On the other hand, if speculation above is any indication, it could be that Melotakis was having more arm trouble. Could be the organization finally just ran out of patience with a guy that was too often hurt.
  19. What's hardest to understand is Turley's pitch selection. Fastball after fastball, and he was barely keeping the ball from sailing over the catcher's head. It looked like Allen finally had to order him to throw some curve balls.
  20. I'm not saying there's anything wrong with Sano's fielding. What I'm saying is that Royce Lewis might be even better, which allows the Twins to put a very athletic guy with a huge bat at 1B.
  21. How about Lewis at 3B, Javier SS, Gordon 2B, with Sano moving over to 1B/DH? We are talking about two or three years from now.
  22. If Twins sign Leach and Enlow, I will conclude that this was a good (not great) draft. We will all be watching McKay, Wright, Greene and Gore as they become front line starters. Any of those four could become a dominating ace. Meanwhile, Royce Lewis looks to be a future star, Rooker could become a star, and the #3, 4, and 5 pitchers were rated as having good potential. If one of them pans out, it will help a lot.
