  1. And all statistics are officially out the window.
  2. Wow, nice swing by Vargas. Drilled that ball low on the outside corner. Power on the outside corner.
  3. So Gausman has high 90's heat, a good change up, a decent curve... Yet somehow, he gets destroyed. His fastball is hot, but it's flat with almost no movement. His change up is good, but not devastating. His curve is merely decent, not a plus pitch. I can see how after seeing him a couple times, hitters have figured him out.
  4. Der Kid!! Actually, I was thinking he was going to put a dent in the right field wall. Gut enuf.
  5. These home plate umps are driving me CRAZY. It's time for electronic balls and strikes.
  6. Reminded me of why I wasn't a very good fielder. Scary baseball!
  7. Gausman's got high 90's heat, but it's almost dead straight. No wonder he has to shift to his off-speed stuff.
  8. Now we know what happens when El Gato does not command the lower half of the zone. Looked like they were beating up a high school pitcher.
  9. "It's better to be looked over than overlooked." - Mae West Felix 'El Gato' Jorge takes the mound again to fool and befuddle another major league ball club with his special blend of clever deliveries...or is it a clever blend of special deliveries? Jorge was overlooked by many as an important piece of the Twins future. This tall, gangly young man doesn't look fearsome on the bump, yet his game has much of the deception and smoothness that we see in Erv Santana. El Gato can't bring it quite as hard as Zentana, but he does top out at a respectable 93 to 94 mph, surprising for a guy that really looks like he should eat a sandwich. What's most promising is that it looks like Jorge can be a true innings eater in the middle or tail end of the Twins pitching order. A guy like that can help protect the limited resources in the bull pen. At his best, he might be better than that. We've seen signs of a back-wrenching change up and control of the lower zone with all his pitches. This guy could be very good. 2017 is the year the Twins should be looking over a lot of guys, including the ones perceived as marginal prospects. AAA guys like Slegers, Hurlbut, Baxendale, Turley, Gee should get a look... and then in the field, I'd like to see Granite, Garver, Park, Palka, Vielma, etc. There is time to look over a lot of these guys.
  10. Kintzler was bringing some nice heat, 95 and 96 with serious movement.
  11. If I'm a scout, my first question about a HS or college pitcher is, how does he achieve velocity? It's so easy to damage a shoulder, an elbow, etc. I would look for pitchers that have a very sound kinetic chain, a synchronized sequence starting from the ground up. I would look for most of the power/velocity to be achieved before the flip, so that the finish puts no undue stress on the upper body. No inverted W with that violent, late torque. The first time I saw Tyler Jay, I noticed a very quick, hard snap at the end of an abbreviated leg and body drive. I couldn't believe my eyes. This was going to be a starting pitcher? I doubted my own perceptions because...well... the Twins have professional scouts. Right?? So what I thought I was seeing, that must be wrong, somehow. Now Tyler Jay has wrecked his shoulder, which means he will need to learn how to throw without repeating the injury. If he keeps throwing it the same way, he will either need to slow down, or he'll wreck his shoulder again. Bye-bye, mid 90's fastball. So long, hard slider. We hardly knew ye. Moral: Pick only pitchers that have a smooth, easy motion with no hard torques or snaps. Even if they don't throw high 90's, at least they may last all the way through the minor leagues without surgery. I'll take a gangly, smooth throwing kid like Felix Jorge over a flame thrower like Jay any day.
  12. The Zenn diagram of Twins fielders has a lot of crossover in the corners where the circles connect at their intersections. Technically, Zach Granite does fill some holes in the deficiencies of three out of four outfielders. He's a better contact hitter than either Rosario or Buxton. He's a better outfielder than Grossman. He's faster than all but Buxton, and a better base stealer than all of them, tho Buxton's improved technique could soon make him the best base stealer in Twins history. About my only hesitation on Granite is, there's another guy that might be a better super utility man, with a lot of the same skills. Niko Goodrum. His skills might better fit the team's needs, but his batting average is...below average. A .247 batter in AAA probably translates to a .200 hitter in the show. Otherwise, Granite's .365 (.371 last 10 games) suggests that he'd be a very good hitter in the majors, giving the Twins a good bat, excellent base runner and fielder off the bench. If one of the other guys needs a break or is scuffling at the plate...put in Granite.
  13. 2017 is not THE YEAR. This season is still developmental, a year for testing guys from within the system. This is the year we found out that Berrios is for real, that Mejia is getting solid, that Grossman is actually a ballplayer, not just a walk machine. Let us not pretend that trading prospects for a couple good relievers will send this team to the Series. We have seen some mixed results from the minors this season, but some of them look very good. Busenitz and Hildenberger look good. Jorge looked surprisingly good. All these guys are young, under contract for several years, and appear talented. 2017 should be a season for many more of these tests. We should see Zach Granite, Mitch Garver, Gonsalves, Stewart, Jorge... maybe even a cuppa coffee for Gordon and Vielma. The Twins should tend their own garden, not grab other people's fruit.
  14. We're going to need to acknowledge something about Castro and Gimenez: They're good catchers, not great ones. Both have stronger arms than Suzuki did, both have more pop in the bat than Suzuki did, but neither one is a great defensive backstop. That includes decisions like Castro's last night. To me this game highlights the need for a little better offense from the catching position, and a little more speed available off the bench. I think the Twins have both available in Rochester, New York.
  15. Seth, is Dereck Rodriguez for real? I mean, does he have the stuff to develop into a starter, or is he more of a reliever with just a heater and a slider, something like that?
  16. Nice pounce, turn and throw by Erv. Best athlete?
  17. Felix Jorge should replace Santiago right now. One performance was all I needed to see a pronounced difference in quality. Jorge's game is simply much better than Santiago's. Seth has a reasonable approach for Gonsalves and Romero - bump them up to AAA while we see if Gibson and Mejia continue to perform well. If one or both falters again, I would not hesitate to bring up Gonsalves, and then Romero. Bert Mejia does not concern me much. He seems to be gradually improving at the big league level, getting better at finding his spots and changing speeds. Kyle Gibson is more of a concern because he has been inconsistent in his approach. Gibson simply MUST pitch inside. He MUST change speeds. He MUST find a better mix of pitches. He MUST NOT nibble. He wins when he attacks the zone and keeps hitters off balance.
  18. Molitor's tutoring on base stealing is paying off. Buxton had a good lead, read the pitcher's move, and got a very good jump. Easy steal because he did the preparation.
  19. Gibson is looking...dare I say it...pretty good.
  20. Zach Granite: .363 BA. Which one belongs in AAA?
  21. This might sound a little odd, but I'd like to see the Twins call up Derrick Rodriguez in September, put him in the bullpen. He's a low-risk guy, not on the prospect list, but he's been showing rapid improvement over the last couple years. Meanwhile, I'd call up Gonsalves right after the All Star Game.
  22. Unintentional Yogi-ism of the day... Jack Morris: "He's got the corner on the circle." Geometry joke!
  23. Griffen Jax sounds very mature for a guy pitching in low A ball.
