  1. Twins have prospects that could pan out better than any of these guys in their present condition. Keep circulating guys between the club and AAA/AA. Come September, let's see Gonsalves, Jorge again, maybe one or two better performers from Rochester. No. Big. Trades.
  2. Great write-up again, mister Froemming. Your work is being noticed. I cannot say by whom, for I do not know, but if I did... ...what was I talking about? Oh no, the dog's got the baby!
  3. Agreed. However, I believe the Twins should be a bit more conservative with Royce Lewis. They should demur from promoting him further for at least another two weeks. I think one bump per month should be sufficient. ;-)
  4. If we are concerned with fairness and avoiding injuries, then it seems reasonable that the catcher should not block the plate with anything other than a glove full of baseball. Otherwise, we're back to the Buster Posey problem, where a catcher is vulnerable to a runner crashing through, not with his hand like Dozier, but with his foot into the catcher's foot, or a football-style collision. If Dozier slides in with his foot, his shoe would go right through the catcher's foot. That could easily break a bone for either player. The solution is for the catcher to allow the runner 1/2 of the plate, unless he is reaching for the runner with a ball in his glove.
  5. Polanco should be DFA'd, Berrios is overrated, and Sano can't deliver with runners on. How this team is beating the mighty Yankees 6 zip in the 3rd inning is beyond me... ;-)
  6. A lane to the plate? You mean through the catcher's shoe? Dozier had to reach over and past the catcher's shoe in order to touch the plate. That is why he was "out." Maybe a "lane" means the catcher can't line up like an offensive lineman blocking the plate. If that's the rule, I claim the foul.
  7. The catcher clearly blocked the front of the plate with his shoe. By the current interpretation of the rules, that makes the runner safe. They can of course ignore their own rules, and we have all seen them do so in game situations. That is probably why Molitor didn't challenge the call.
  8. I hate to say it, but Blackburn is a fair comp for Kyle Gibson at this point, with this painful caveat: Blackburn was plagued by injuries that took away his ability to be effective. Gibson has no such excuse. His heat is still low to mid-90's. His off-speed stuff still bites and fools hitters...sometimes. Gibson's problem appears to be psychological. He seems too nice to pitch inside, he tends to nibble the outside corner, and when he gets behind, he has no devastating whiff pitch. I've said before that if you could transplant Jack Morris's attitude into Gibson, you'd have a dominant ace. I have to take that back now. Along with his junkyard dog attitude, Morris also had a devastating fork ball that would drop straight down just before it reached the plate. Almost nobody could lay off that thing, and if they didn't whiff, they'd pound it into the ground. Gibson has no such pitch. On a good day his slider/curve can induce some whiffs, but he's just as likely to leave one hanging right over the middle of the plate...boom. Maybe Gibson can reassemble his game as a reliever with a 2-seamer and a slider, something like that. Even then, he'll need to learn to attack attack attack, not nibble. Either that, or I'd send him down to AAA. Right now, his game isn't competitive at the mlb level.
  9. Having been in the military, I can assure you that how these things work is purely political.
  10. For some reason I thought Brandon Kintzler was a former starter. I didn't realize that he had to claw his way through the minors, the independents and obscurity to finally find a serious niche in Minnesota. Good for Kintzler!
  11. Get in shape, Miguel! You can beat Judge next year!!
  12. Tom Froemming, you are an excellent writer. Please keep doing these recaps. They really are fun to read, and you put them together in a very professional way. It's almost like something from Sports Illustrated.
  13. The US military can't get by without the lethality of... Griffin Jax's curve ball?
  14. Royce Lewis should keep a suitcase packed.
  15. Agreed. The "Colon" jokes have gotten out of hand. Time to put a stopper in it. I'll go first.
  16. This is a very wow thing. Zach Granite is the fifth outfielder, so I expect him to give one of the others a break, plus provide good speed and a good bat off the bench. Whoever is hot will play more and more. One thing is certain: Granite has earned this shot.
  17. I'm not sure a guy on a 250cc two-stroke dirt bike could have beaten Buxton from first to home. The way he flails his arms, it's almost like somebody is dragging him forward, and he's just trying to stay on his feet.
  18. Too bad Colon didn't go to Seattle. He could have been the Ancient Mariner. Poetry joke!
  19. No, I did see that story early this morning. The man has very little left to offer. Even with a magical Greg Maddux two-seamer, Colon lacks the poop to pop heaters past pro bats. Poopless gas is annoying.
  20. Try all your other pitching prospects first. If they all flop, then bring in Colon.
  21. Bartolo Colon at this point should be considered a sideshow act for a last place team. Even if he dominates in AAA, it means nothing. Big leaguers are a lot harder to shut down than AAA guys. I see two near term futures for Colon. 1) Go to the St Paul Saints and have lots of fun in semi-retirement. 2) "Retire" for a while, start taking steroids again, pump up that old body, ease off the juice just before spring training, see if you can pass a pee test. Otherwise, he should hang 'em up. Great career. Now go teach some little kids how to play ball.
  22. Was I the only one gritting his teeth when Polanco flipped that throw casually, and it looked high? Whew! Where's that chicken?
  23. Kintzler almost reminds me of Greg Maddux, the way he can bend his heater left or right and throw strikes. Not quite the surgical precision of Maddux, but Kintzler's stuff is very hard to read, and he keeps throwing strikes.
  24. Polanco is looking pretty awkward at the plate...
