  1. I was going to say McCloud/Bloom, but I'd be pretty thrilled here too.
  2. I'd like to comment on this a bit. I think we've all seen WOW moves at the deadline... and we've seen MEH moves at the deadline. We can say the same for winter moves. It's all about supply and demand. Granted there's an incentive midseason to keep up with the Jones' and show your fan base that you're all in, but I don't think the premium exists just because it's a deadline. It exists because you have something that everyone wants at the deadline, and in that scenario, they may pay more to get it. But to that point, we know the Twins were willing to trade him, and we know the Jays backed out essentially killing the deal. I think the Twins were quite willing to part with him in July for said premium. I'm not certain they couldn't get a similar deal come December. The question on Santana is whether or not he will have the same value he has this winter come next June. There's a lot of risk the team is going to swallow there, including a well documented UCL issue in his throwing elbow. Given the risk with pitchers that doesn't exist with hitters, I'd note that risking waiting beyond this winter isn't quite the same with Erv than it would be with a hitter like Park or Vargas. Not sure if that changes things, as I wouldn't move him for a less than stellar deal, but it does make shopping Ervin this winter a very reasonable option.
  3. Just a moderator note, but let's try and cut down on the tension here. There's a lot of good conversation in this thread that is being overshadowed by it. Thanks.
  4. I don't get the dislike of Tonkin. he's spent 1 year in the pen minus a few Chargois type opportunities over the last few seasons. The Ks are there, as are the minor league results. I'd give him more than this year to work things out... If it comes to the point where he's blocking someone, then yes... but we aren't there yet.
  5. Anyways, I'd go youth. Pressley, Tonkin, Chargois, and Rogers for sure. Maybe Kintzler as a place holder, but I'm definitely leaving room for guys like Light, Burdi, Hildenberger, Melotakis, etc. if one or two of them is lighting up AAA. Not putting much faith in Perkins/Hughes given their injuries. May not hurt to have one of those guys around as I do believe that veteran presence means something, but I certainly wouldn't hand them a spot over a deserving kid. Problem with Hughes though is that he's under contract for 3 more years. It's a bit easier to dump Perkins on the last year of his deal, but I can certainly understand if management wants to keep Hughes around.
  6. So Santana and pray for rain right now... ouch. I think that gives more impetus on moving on from BD (below average defender) though it hurts the offense pretty bad given that BD is probably 50% of our offense (not quite, but you get the exaggeration)... Definitely makes acquiring pitching a priority. Berrios seems to have talent to get there some day, but I think patience is warranted. Sadly, short of Sano at 3B and possibly a corner spot, this team (without BD) should be solidly above average... They need some pitching.
  7. Couple things on Santana. 2 years left and probably as high of a value as you can have, so yes, if you get a good deal, shop him. He's not going to get major league ready high upside pitching. Any team with major league ready high upside pitching is far more likely to role with such pitching in their 5 spot than to trade it and more for Santana. He might get you that catcher you want.If he nets pitching, think guys who just completed some level of A ball (either high or low).Dozier could get you a pitcher you want, but probably only one that would be ready to start next spring.
  8. No to Santiago. Strong no. I'm fine with Santana (not against a trade there either). Berrios needs to figure out major league pitching, so I'm fine with those growing pains too. Gibson probably deserves one more chance to figure things out, but this would be a make or break year for him. Baring a trade, I'd want May, Duffey, and Mejia to compete for the 4 and 5 spots. At least there's some upside with most of those guys. Don't expect it to just happen in 2017, but I do think that over the season they could improve on what we had this year.
  9. Agreed, but Trout is still above average in that aspect... and then you add the bat. I think Trout should get it, and yeah, I'd give it to a guy like Trout over Cabrera any day. Cabrera is essentially a DH... I don't have a problem with a DH winning it, but he's got to be Barry Bonds steroid era with the bat to do so.
  10. I have to say that the numbers post leg kick are dead sexy and can play anywhere. I have to think though that he's going to have to repeat some something similar in High A next season to really have value. Also strikes me as a mid season promotion candidate if he keeps hitting.
  11. Trade Dozier. I think Escobar is a better defender at SS anyways, and with Gordon not that far away, he's a decent placeholder.
  12. I spent years finding a good stylist, and after finding one, my hair fell out...
  13. To some extent yes, but Berrios certainly isn't the first major league pitcher to tip his pitches, and he won't be the last. When it isn't obvious, it's the type of thing that can be overlooked, especially when he's doing well. The other real problem is that since minor league hitters haven't figured it out, it certainly doesn't fall on the list of things that gets quickly fixed. He may have been getting away with it for a while.
  14. yeah, I think there was more to that injury. He did just fine in AAA, even with the injury. I wouldn't be surprised if Park makes TR look like a genius next year, except for the real problem of having 3 guys for 1B/DH... though if Park breaks out, someone would trade for him.
  15. My 2 cents, I'll forgive the Cherrington thing. Simply put, when you're job seeking, you'll be looking at both options, and while the search firm may or may not have known that, Cherrington is going to play both sides of that. He's going to want to see the better opportunity, which I'm sure is a combination of salary, family, likeliness to succeed, etc. AA is a bit different here, in that he only cites family. Perhaps that is true. He wouldn't be the first to turn down a good opportunity for things like that. It also may be a convenient excuse. The problem is that we see a lot of smoke with the owner (Nolasco signing, Molitor comments, etc.) that indicates that Pohlad has more control than perhaps he should. That does concern me. As for the Twins FO being a bit behind, well yeah. That's probably at least part of the reason why we are looking at 100 losses this season. I would think that this wouldn't a deterrent to a perspective applicant. If anything, it's an opportunity to make your mark so to speak. That said, there is a real issue with a competing job (say Toronto) looking more appealing in that sense (easier to succeed), but the only way it's a deal breaker is if the owner is coming out and saying that they cannot modernize it, because he doesn't want to double his scouting staff or something like that. That would be a big problem. Not sure I buy the Minnesota winters thing. Yeah, they suck. Yeah, they are worse than Cleveland, Detroit, Chicago, etc. But I don't see the deterrent there, unless Pohlad keeps the heat at 62 in the winter. The team HQ is in Fort Myers. I'm guessing they spend a lot of time there in the winter anyways.
  16. yeah, I'm a bit surprised that Diaz, Kirilloff, and Blankenhorn didn't make it. Granted they are at a lower level, but they pretty solidly out performed guys like Molina, Granite, and Weil. Problem with Weil is that while he was amazing in the second half, he was pretty bad in the first half. Overall OPS was .792. That doesn't exactly scream 1B of the future... now if second half Weil is the guy going forward, then I'll happily eat crow there.
  17. yeah, he finished strong last year if memory serves me right... I just want to see him cut down the Ks.
  18. I'm not sure there was a Harper/Strassburg type pick a year before they were taken either. It's really too soon to hope for such a person. We will have a much better idea if one exists come next May.
  19. So guys, if you want to talk football and the Bradford trade, please take it here: Side note, but just b/c it's a football conversation also does not mean that the level of respect we expect on TD get to change.
  20. I'd note that the PP article mentions the GM position for AA, not the POBO. I'm a bit surprised that they would be interviewing for the GM if they wanted a POBO. Not sure what to think about that.
  21. I'm sorry, but DH at 23 isn't a reasonable solution for Sano. I think it's better for him and the team to work through his defensive issues, especially considering he had a lost year in 2014, spent most of 2015 as a DH and most of 2016 playing OF for some silly reason. It's really not fair to simply relegate him to DH given how little repetition he's had at 3B over the last 3 years... especially when you factor his age. My advice to him would be to spend the offseason working on his defense. It's better for both his career and the team if he's competent at the position, and there's little evidence saying he cannot be if he puts in the effort.
  22. I don't know if they cut corners here or not, but that is something that I've read they have done. That's unfortunate if that's the case. Goofy is one way to put it. I'd have a few other adjectives to describe that. It's basically shooting yourself in the foot.
