Article: 2016 Report Cards: Outfield
diehardtwinsfan replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
guess I'm not quite sold on Buxton just yet. I really hope I'm wrong there, but he showed promise in Sept of 2015 too only to start out horrid in 2016. I'm not sure I'd be sold handing him CF for 2017 just yet. I'd probably have a plan B- 65 replies

Article: Projecting The 2020 Twins Line-Up
diehardtwinsfan replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I'm not sure I want Sano at 1B until he's beyond his rookie contract. that's me personally, but I think he's of more impact at 3B and in his 20s he should be able to play it. Rosario is the name on this list that I suspect will most likely be replaced. He needs to improve on that walk rate and we have two years now of him just swinging at anything. He's young enough to improve, but I think there's a hole there in the OF that someone else can move into. Blankenhorn switched to 2nd, so while he was drafted as a 3B, he's being worked at a tougher position defensively. I like that. He may move back to 3rd, but if he can stick defensively and continues to hit, he will be of much more value at 2nd. I'm with Thrylos on Wade, I have to think he's in the picture by then. He's a CF too. I'm not sure how good he is defensively, but I tend to think this means he can play a corner spot with an above average defense. Vielma, on the other hand, I hope is only a defensive sub. Not sure I like the idea of him being an every day starter unless his bat takes huge strides forward. Here's another under the radar name. AJ Murray. I'm not sure of his defensive makeup at C, but I think he might be a candidate that not many expected to take a big leap. That's a hunch on my part. He was hot for a long stretch this year before cooling off (and getting promoted). I personally hope that was due to him tiring out.- 40 replies

Article: All About Jose De Leon
diehardtwinsfan replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
He has been a strikeout machine in the minors. I think people are down on him due to the #4 projection he initially got. So far, he's exceeded expectations, and I have to think the 4/5 comparisons are a bit unfair at the moment. I've noted elsewhere that I'd be fine with him as a 3rd piece to De Leon and Alvarez. He's a safer prospect with some nice upside at this point. -
What Numbers Can Twins Expect In 2017?
diehardtwinsfan commented on Ted Schwerzler 's blog entry in Off The Baggy
a 77-80 win team would be right on the cusp of contending. The young guys would need to take a step forward, and I'd have to think Berrios in particular would need to make some majors strides. Definitely doable, but I'd be more confident in that if they were jettisoning a guy like Santiago and going with upside. If the rotation/AAA depth consisted of De Leon, Berrios, Gibson, May, and Santana with Mejia/Gonsalves (and maybe Stewart) in AAA, I'd be pretty confident that the rotation could take a big step forward. -
As it is, with Hughes in the rotation, you have Mejia and Berrios in AAA. That's not bad from a depth thing, but I'd argue that both really need to be in Minnesota sooner than later. Perhaps the assumption is that 2017 is not a lost season (not sure I agree), but I think the team would be better off getting both of them some major league time, and in Berrios' case, there's really nothing left to prove in the minors. Mejia didn't spend much time in AAA, so starting there isn't bad from a depth move. and yeah, if they add guys like Stewart and/or De Leon from LA, you've got to dump guys like Santiago. Heck, if there was a reason to trade Santana, that would be it too. Depth is good, but I don't see it being a good thing when your younger talent is being blocked by guys like Santiago.

I thought there was some serious talk about Hughes to the pen to make room for Berrios. Not quite sure I see the point in Berrios starting in AAA. That said, if they are confident that Hughes will be ready, then I have to think that they need to find a way to remove Santiago. You might need a couple of AAAA type arms in Rochester for depth purposes, but with Gonsalves likely starting in AAA and guys like Jay, Stewart, and Jorge all in AA, that makes the most sense.

No, this team is bad. It cannot win a game, even when the opponent refuses to play. -
Article: How Will The New CBA Affect The Twins?
diehardtwinsfan replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
honestly, the international cap had more to do with competitive balance. Like it or not, you have to have some of that in professional sports, or at one point the entire sport suffers. It would have been nice though that in favor of a cap, they fixed minor league wages... that's what the MLBPA should have angled for there. -

I'm kind of curious about that too. If they want cash, by all means get it, but be able to use it to make the team better elsewhere. -
Article: How The Twins Drafts Stack Up
diehardtwinsfan replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
problem with that proven major league talent is that it drops off pretty quick due to age or injury, and then you're stuck. Every opportunity is a dangerous way to run a team in my opinion. There's definitely, however, smart opportunities to add talent. If memory serves me right, we got Castillo for an absolute song during a Marlins fire sale. That's one example, but hardly the only one. picking up the Feldman's of the world or good bounce back candidates are great ways as well, especially or a bad team, but trading Buxton and Sano off for guys who will help now is quite likely going to leave us perpetually mediocre, especially when the team isn't one piece away from competing.- 73 replies

Article: How The Twins Drafts Stack Up
diehardtwinsfan replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Obviously, there's some truth to this, but I personally maintain that scouting and development are two completely different ideas. Both are necessary, and if you do one of them poorly, you're going to have bad results no matter how well you do the other one... An article of how we drafted in relation to other teams measures both metrics especially when WAR is the main component, and there really isn't a good way to separate the two. That's a long winded way of saying that I don't think identifying talent is the problem in Minnesota personally, and on that most of the national pundits agreed (or else they wouldn't have rated the farm system so highly)... what they have failed at (and done so miserably in my opinion), is developing said talent.- 73 replies

Article: Winter Meetings Are Over. Now What?
diehardtwinsfan replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I'm not sure Kazmir would be an easy flip. He's been moving in the wrong direction now for a while. I don't mind picking up a bad contract for a better prospect, but I wouldn't be surprised if we end up stuck with said bad contract too. -

anything that gets rid of Santiago is good in my book. -
this may be true, and if that's the case, you keep him. That said, once the FA pitching market plays out, I'd think that someone would give up something of value for ESan. Heck, Santiago might get a flier... though i'd lean towards trading Hector first.

I really think people need to go back and see what actually constitutes a #3 pitcher in reality. People toss Santana's name around like this assuming he has no upside despite posting an ERA sub 3.4 in the AL with good K numbers for a starter and 180+ innings. The average MLB ERA was around 4.3 this year... There are few teams in baseball that can say that Santana would not be an upgrade, and we don't do ourselves any favors by knocking the guy. He's a good pitcher.

Don't mind getting Pomeranz, but doesn't he only have 2 or 3 more seasons of control? Kind of similar to ESan in that capacity. He's younger, which is a plus, but I'm guessing he's going to cost a lot... probably more like Jorge AND Stewart + someone else.- 120 replies

Article: Official Winter Meetings: Sunday Thread
diehardtwinsfan replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Urias may be untouchable. That's certainly fair, and I think we all agree that LA can likely get Dozier without Urias. But.... if you want us to start throwing in prospects, that makes the deal all that much better, and I want upside not quantity, and the new front office should be thinking the same. Perhaps Urias is untouchable (I'm still asking). There are still scenarios where I'd include Stewart. It would still involve some nice prospects (De Leon, Alvarez, Bellinger, and someone like Willie Calhoun would make me think about it). I wouldn't pretend that Stewart is untouchable, but like others have said, the STUFF is there. The results not so much just yet. But he's always been very young for his league and still confounded hitters. His value may be lower, but he's hardly a guy worth throwing away.- 82 replies

Article: Dozier Trade Talk Heating Up?
diehardtwinsfan replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
You tell them what you want. They tell you what they will give. You have their offer and simply note that right now it would take Urias, De Leon, and Alvarez. You know theirs is lower. For the time being, you say "I'll think about it" and go look at other offers. Falvey/Levine can always call LA back. They can also float what's on the table to get a better offer and then shop it back to LA if/when that happens... but never give them a reasonable offer early on. They may take it. -
