  1. Honestly, all this "favorites, contenders, dark horse" conversation is all nothing but speculation. This would be true if money was the ultimate goal, but if money was the ultimate goal, Ohtani would wait two years to get posted. He wants something else, and he'd make a ton more money by staying, and in all honesty there's very little additional risk to doing so as his wages the next two years in Japan will be very similar to the best possible MLB outcome in the next two years. I honestly think that just about any MLB team could get him, at least until there's something more concrete about what he really wants. Here's to hoping that what he wants is a bonus north of 3M, a smaller market, a lake house near by, and a team that lets him play two ways.... one can dream.
  2. all this talk and he signs with the Pirates....
  3. I like you Bark, but I cannot root against this. so...
  4. Nothing wrong with a little hope. The national media is saying NY is the favorite, but there's really nothing but speculation to base it on (money plus lore). Ohtani is, without question, pursuing something other than money for this, which is what would normally make NY the favorite. I wouldn't be surprised at all if Ohtani is not in NY, Boston, or LA come 2018. So yeah, hope away.
  5. I just don't see it. It's a very low opinion of the intelligence of the Met's FO. I could certainly see trading Santana, especially if that netted some prospects that could be combined with some of our prospects to get a guy like Archer, but I don't see a scenario where the Mets trade for him, and I'm not sure 1 year of Dozier for a team that won 70 games last year is going to encourage them to part for a front line starter.
  6. It's probably worth pointing out Ohtani's life style choices in Japan. He doesn't seem to be the kind of guy who wants to live under the constant lights that NYC will require. He basically lives like a hermit in a dorm in Japan. Even with his "small" salary, he could live better and flashier if he wanted... To me, this is a major strike against NY. He wont' get privacy if he wants that. Ultimately, we don't know what he wants, but I like the fact that the Twins are doing what they can to get him. Hopefully, we do.
  7. why would any of these teams want Santana if they have these arms we are targeting?
  8. You're basically sending 3 high floor low ceiling guys at Pittsburg for Cole. I'm guessing they want more ceiling.... call me crazy. I think most of us would do this if Pittsburg wanted some of that, but I'm guessing Pit says no. I do think that we should be able to unload one or two of those guys as a key component in a trade to get a Cole or Archer, but I think there's going to be some higher ceiling guys (such as Gordon or Gonsalves) coming with.
  9. yeah, I'm not a fan of trading Gordon (though I've accepted it at this point). I think Jorge is the first guy I want to use to get help. If they are picking up a pitcher in trade and FA, you can probably shop Romero or Gonsalves too. I'd rather keep Thorpe and Gaterol at the moment.
  10. well said... and TD is less dysfunctional than my real family...
  11. This... I don't think a contending team would be wise to try and keep a guy who isn't major league ready on the roster all season long. But if they can pick up 250k in international dollars to make an Otani deal sweeter, they should.
  12. the rest of us hate you... unless the two week periods were Christmas and Thanksgiving, I'd suggest you see a doctor.
  13. yeah, they are going to be adding some talent this offseason.
  14. I believe you need to have accumulated 5 or 6 years (I think it's 6) of minor league service time to be a minor league FA.
  15. This is not true for everyone. That is my biggest issue with this debate. I can personally attest to being unable to lose weight while running 20+ miles a week (while training for a marathon and adding interval training) while consuming under 1500 calories a day, and I doubt I'm the only one. I don't know Sano at all personally. I have no idea how much he does or does not consume or how much he does or does not work out. Neither do you. My point is that there is a lot about weight management that we do not understand. The danger is making conclusions based on assumptions. I suspect, like it or not, that Sano is probably one of those guys who won't lose weight easily. It doesn't mean he's lazy.
  16. Not surprised at all by Diaz. He won't be taken either. Burdi could get taken and stashed on the 60 day DL... I don't like that personally, but that's the risk. He will need to return mid-season and will likely be relatively useless to the team that takes him as he knocks the rust off. I hope he's not selected, but I could see someone trying it. Stewart surprises me. Honestly, that says a lot about what the FO thinks of him. Scouts say the stuff is there, but results matter. The FO doesn't seem to think he's going to make it any time soon, otherwise they would have protected him.
  17. 250k... not a ton. Though I'd be fine if the Twins could send one of the marginal guys away for enough to put them in front on the Otani cash side of the sweepstakes.
  18. I want one of Lynn or Darvish.. Pretty meh to the rest of the crowd.
  19. a normal male would eat a few of his wife's endless ribs when no one is looking... just sayin...
  20. nah.... some of us expect to have our hopes dashed.
  21. what do you do with your Vikings expectations?
  22. this.. this and this... I started putting one together, but it has been very difficult this year. Lots of ceiling way down in the ranks. It's almost like our new FO made a lot of improvements in the development area and suddenly a lot more guys are showing promise...
  23. I don't think the Twins should have a plan where Vargas gets that many PAs, but I do think they need to have the flexibility should something click in Vargas' age 27 season. Plenty of players break out at 27, and Vargas certainly has the hitting skills to be that type of DH that you describe. I'm fine leaving Vargas on as a rotating DH and bench bat while he's cheap. If he's hitting well, then suddenly he's a full time DH/occasional 1B. Mauer will need plenty of rest as it is. There is room for Vargas.
  24. I think the 85-90% health is a bit unrealistic, as Sano's procedure is not that invasive... but, to play the game... I probably cross that bridge in the spring, definitely not now. If he needs time recovering/conditioning, the DL is probably the option unless the injury isn't affecting Sano's bat at all. We should be able to see that in the spring... then again, Sano looked pretty bad last spring and we all know how that turned out.
