  1. I think so... But I think it's also fair to note that the book isn't quite closed on either of them yet. Stewart at this point should be written off by most, but he's on the 40 man and has started to shown he can get the Ks (just not consistently)... He could be a surprise, even if the odds are low. Jay could still be a dominant reliever.
  2. Wondering if they get a competitive A round pick this year. They are probably still in bottom 10 in market. Revenue may have went up though.
  3. Given where they are picking, that wouldn't bother me too much. They won't have the pool money this year to play games, so giving up the 2nd or 3rd round pick wouldn't bother me personally. That's well worth it for the right player.
  4. If you're dangling both of them, I think you are trying to get something more of a sure thing like Archer. I don't know enough about Lamet, but I think the thought is that he could be had cheaper b/c he has more question marks. You shouldn't need two top 100 players for that.
  5. UCL is a tendon. The labrum is fibro-cartilage. I'm not sure there's much to be done about either from a being in shape standpoint. The point is that you cannot successfully predict injury to pitchers (at least as of today). That said, I'd still lock him up.
  6. While I understand and respect what you're saying, I do hope you're wrong about the FA part. It's a poor decision on their part if that's what they do.
  7. I think to an extent we need to see what this new FO will do. We are basing a lot of this on how the old FO operated. We don't know how much came from Pohlad vs. Ryan.
  8. That might be true if the same people are both stating "don't trade prospects" and "don't spend the money". Are you sure that's the case? I'm not. Or perhaps they are simply stating that the Twins wont' go spend the money (that might be right, but not necessarily an edict on what they should or shouldn't do). I'm simply saying that I don't think anyone is saying "do nothing and find the next Kubler/Arietta".
  9. Your problem, Mike, is that no one is saying it just like this. You're arguing against an idea that literally no one on this board supports. We need to find the next Arrieta, that's not up for debate, and hiring Falvine was a step in that direction, but I don't think anyone is saying that this is the only way to handle the team going forward. If someone is, let them step up and say so.
  10. This discussion is ironic given that Nathan was not a proven closer when we got him. This team needs relief help, and they need guys who can get the Ks and have the mentality to walk into those pressure situations and shine, but as we saw, guys like Kintzler and Guardado can do that job just fine. I don't have a problem with a guy like Nathan in that role, but right now, we just need more guys like Nathan. The correct words to search for are "shutdown reliever" not "proven closer."
  11. I'd be thrilled acquiring any of Lamet/Cole/Archer. I'm not, however, a fan of gutting the system to get them. We have enough surplus where it may be possible, and I wouldn't be upset, but ultimately, I think spending cash may make more sense here. Those prospects can be used to either extend the window of competitiveness, or fill other gaps as needed. Otani is certainly intriguing. His contract is going to be capped (meaning money won't be the issue), however, so the question at hand is what else he wants, as I suspect it's going to be his second contract, being a 2 way player, endorsements, or (most likely) destination that are capturing his attention. If we can do that, awesome. Ultimately, I think you bite the bullet and pay for a starter.
  12. This is true, but that takes time. In the mean time, the Twins need starting help now.
  13. not a fan with year to year with any of these guys. You will likely lose one, if not several. You'll also end up shortening the window as these guys will become FAs and demand the big cash. Lock them up now. It lengthens the window and adds some cost certainty. It gives us the ability to add pieces around them if needed. If you wait, some will be gone, and it's usually the best players.
  14. To answer the original question: No. They need pen help. I'll be disappointed if a guy like Kintzler is the target. I want 1, if not 2, high leverage relievers. They can fill the 9th inning role come spring.
  15. You acquire multiple players. That risk is party of why you rarely see 1 for 1 deals of major league talent for minor league talent. Trading Dozier was the right answer last offseason. Trading Dozier straight up for De Leon was not. I'm glad Falvine stuck to their guns on that one.
  16. I know this, I was thinking that should be a 3 or 4 person deal. I think after the 100 or so pages of back and forth with Dodgers fans, I was willing to go with Stewart, JDL, Buehler, and a guy like Ruiz. JDL and Stewart both got hurt (though Stewart did get some pen action towards the end). Buehler is the only pitching prospect in there that at the moment looks promising. That's why you need more than one pitching prospect. Dozier on the other hand, put up a nice season. It would be very funny if the LA ends up losing the world series in a tight contents with no value from Forsythe...
  17. Darvish gives us a better chance to win both in the regular season and in the post season than just about any other option out there. That, in my opinion, is the point.
  18. I'm not sure the dislike for May. He kind of got jerked around by the old administration in a "competition" that never was. He was moved into the pen, where he was fine until he got hurt. He got TJS this offseason. Like it or not, you have to be patient here. He should be pitching at some point next year, and I do hope they give him every opportunity to start when he is ready. Failure to do so would be a waste in my opinion.
  19. I really think the Twins should stay away from calculated risk plays in FA.... Just go out and get a good pitcher. Bite the bullet and pay for it.
  20. I'll say what I said before, but with a guy like Lynn, I'm looking more at the trends as the season progressed, not the overall ERA/FIP. He's going to struggle his first year back. I want to a see a trend moving in the right direction if I'm going to spend money on a long term deal. That said, Lynn, if he's not getting good offers, might be a guy you can do a 1 year deal with. Given the arms sitting in AA/AAA next season (not to mention Trevor May), that might not be a bad option either as it's not unreasonable to see enough of guys like Gonsalves and Romero in 2018 to indicate that they are worth putting in the rotation in 2019.
  21. I personally doubt Stewart has the value to get a decent 2/3 back. But I'm bit surprised on your take on Gonsalves. I like him, don't get me wrong, but even if he breaks into the rotation in 2018, he's going to have some ups and downs making him at best an average pitcher in 2018-2019. If you can flip that for a guy who has already had the ups and downs and has figured things out, I think you do it. Yeah, you'll have 3 years of control, but that is still a good trade. and that's coming from a guy that really likes Gonsalves.
  22. I think you lock him up as well. I'm not sure where this lack of work ethic stuff comes from. If it's just a number on a scale, then I think people really need to rethink what work ethic is and is not, and to be fair to Sano, that is what it looks like from here. The Twins see him in the locker room and in the trainers room. I think they will have a much better understanding of that particular issue. Perhaps there's something to the perception, who knows... but as someone else noted, if you go year to year, he's gone when he finishes arb. I'd like to get a couple of those FA years to extend our window. Both Sano and Buxton are looking like stars, and the longer we can keep them together, the more likely we see a ring during that timeframe.
  23. well written piece. What do you think a Wade Davis type would want? I'm asking from the standpoint that if it was under 10M a year, I'd probably still go after him. I think the Twins could do well to get one or two RP pieces, but I'd rather them get the shut down types so Molitor doesn't have to overly rely on guys like Hildy as he did with Duffey this season.
  24. I agree with this, but I'm not sure median income is necessarily the best way to look at it. There are some very large cities in central America. The question is whether there is enough of a middle class to sustain baseball in one or more of them. Given just how much they love baseball there, I wouldn't throw it out either.
  25. No not really... I don't live in MN, so I don't pay taxes on the stadium, and the moment I do any of those things, that money becomes theirs. That's how it works... The question at hand is if they can spend money in order to get people like us to spend more of ours on their product. I think they can for the record, but I'm not going to agree with the idea that I'm simply lending them my cash.
