Article: Winter Meetings: Reliever Roulette
diehardtwinsfan replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I don't mind saving some room for the internal options (to a point at least), but I think it would be very negligent on the part of the front office to not pick up a guy (preferably two) that can consistently put a zero up in late innings. I can certainly see one bargain type guy (i.e. Kintzler type), but I think they need at least one more guy who will be someone Molitor can count on from day one... if for no other reason than to keep Molitor from wearing down guys like Hildy and Duffey. -

cannot really complain here. Very little risk to go with what is potentially a nice reward. I don't see much in 2018 for this though... so I really hope it isn't it. -
Article: Winter Meetings: Reliever Roulette

Even with the 5 Nick mentioned, I'd want two arms... and good ones, not crap shoots. Pair that with a starter or two and I think this team is ready to compete. -
Well, I'd start with the ask. Honestly, given the Twins 40 man situation, those players are going to add more pitching to the 40. I've got to think the Twins would hope to send someone like Slegers or Jorge over as a piece for no other reason than that they have way too much pitching on the roster. As well, Archer is probably a better fit. He's younger, done well in the AL East, so more of a sure thing I guess, has more control. Yes, he costs more, but I have to think that it also means a package centering say Gordon, Gonsalves, Jay, and maybe a guy like Jorge. Perhaps not, who knows, but that frees up some 40 man space too so they can add some hitting if they want it.

That window sure looks nicer with a guy like Cole in the rotation. You want my honest opinion of Gordon. Average to slightly above defense with a modestly above average bat. That's a nice asset at SS. I think he can have several .750-.850 OPS type seasons as he hits his prime while playing good enough defense to stick at short. That's a nice piece. He wont' get there in season one, but he should get there. Do you think that is too much to ask? 2 years of a good, above average pitcher, for a two potential above average pieces in a 4th OF.
-
yeah, that's not a terrible offer at all. Gordon and Jay are likely MLBers with some upside. Granite is more of a role guy. Only real issue is that this doesn't solve our 40 man issues with too many pitchers. Actually, it makes them worse. Wonder if they would take a guy like Jorge over Jay (unless they plan on making Jay a starter).

Harvey hasn't pitched well in a few seasons. I think I'd want a bit more of a sure thing if I'm swapping Dozier on a 1 year deal for a pitcher on a 1 year deal.- 66 replies

My two cents, but a lot of guys on this list have a legit chance to be in the top 100 next year at this time. Yeah, there's no Buxton/Sano there right now, but I wouldn't write that off just yet. Most everyone in the top 10 (who aren't already in the top 100) if they make steps forward will get national love. Guys like Palacios, Littlel, Severino, Miranda, etc. could all be in that conversation too if things break right. It's a very deep system with lots of upside. Hopefully, we get some good answers to a lot of the question marks.

I'd likely part with Gonsalves as the key piece to get Cole. Gonsalves will likely take lumps in the majors, and you have to factor that into his major league readiness part. He probably wont' be a significant contributor to this team in 2018. Cole likely would. I'd trade them both for Archer (though I'd rather sub Gordon in for one of them), and I suspect that this is where those talks would start. Archer has 4 years of affordable control and he's pitched VERY well. You're likely sending both Gonsalves and Romero to TB along with a higher ceiling lotto ticket or two in the low minors.
-
yeah, we have a lot of 4/5 types sitting on the 40 man. I do think a trade for a guy like Cole makes sense in that you could probably offload a guy like Jorge as a part of the package (not the whole package, but certainly a part). I also think Enns likely gets the DFA at some point, though again I could see plenty of rebuilding teams who would move MLB talent and be happy to acquire a guy like that who is MLB ready with 6 years as a part of the deal.
-
guess you cannot argue with the approach... they didn't get their guy and this is plan B.

Seems to me that extensions for guys like Buxton, Sano, etc. are a means of adding some cost certainty to players who will quite likely be as or more expensive if they went year to year.. and in exchange, they get a couple years of FA bought out too. I'm not sure how it would be considered extravagant to do such things. My point is that they can (and should) do both, and I highly doubt they are mutually exclusive as you seem to be arguing here.

The fact that there aren't any hard feelings, should be evidence that the team was not putting the squeeze on him.

none of these guys hit very well, and one isn't even known for his defense. I'm a bit underwhelmed here. I'd have rather blown the entire 3.2 on a much better prospect.

Article: Hopes And Plans For Trevor May
diehardtwinsfan replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
his demotion to the pen wasn't due to talent or non-performance. For a team desperate for starting help, he should be a starter... even if that means a month or two in the minors.- 33 replies

Given the SSS, it's probably worth noting the context of the Ks. He started out both of his stints with poor production and high Ks. While he still struck out once producing, it's worth nothing that he adjusted to both leagues and did quite well after.

Honestly Thrylos, between this and your rather public dislike for Dozier, it seems rather obvious that your dislike for the religious type tends to overly influence your perception of a player (in a negative way). I'm not quite sure where I'd rank Kirilloff, but he would without question be in the top 10, even with the injury... at least for this year. Give the kid a shot.

Silly question, but what was his exit velo on grounders in previous seasons as compared to this year? That would, at least in my opinion, make a huge difference in whether this was a skill or luck type situation.

The only way I trade Santana is if he's picking up a prospect that the Rays covet and can be used with another prospect of ours that they covet to get Archer. Otherwise, I don't see the point in trading him. I'd argue that if he hits his 200 innings, then he likely had a good year and I'd be perfectly fine with him being around on a 1 year deal for less than a QO. I really think this overthinks things...
-
Definitely agree on the first part. Always good to add talent, no matter where it is. Not quite sure on the second, but that's fine. I'm certainly not losing sleep on this. The thing that I think we are all forgetting is that Park was essentially run out of the org because of the resurgence of Mauer. With Mauer hitting a lot more like the old Joe and Vargas essentially being a league average hitter, Park became very redundant.
