  1. I think Cave ends up replacing Grossman next year. Seems like the bat has a chance to be decent enough to make him a very dangerous 4th OF... and his defense is much better. This should be depth this season, but if his breakout is for real, this is a great move.
  2. he pitched quite well last year in ST too...and then April/May happened. Hopefully, he picks up where he left off last year. That alone is worth a few wins if he can pitch like the second half for a full season.
  3. given that they have needs in SP now, I don't mind them getting a few on shorter term deals. They have enough guys with some ML success (May, Mejia) and plenty of promise (Littell, Gonsalves, Romero, Thorpe, Slegers, Enns) that they should be able to piece through a rotation in 2019 and 2020. The problem is that they will need to do some trial and error. That will happen during the inevitable injury.. these guys are stop gaps... and good ones at that.
  4. Well... I'm done complaining. They picked up 2 SPs, made a huge upgrade to the lineup, and added 2 (maybe 3) solid arms to the pen. I wanted Darvish, but if someone had told me that the Twins would walk away with Lynn (my number 2), Reed, Rodney, Morrison, and Odorizzi, I'd have been ecstatic. This team has a legitimate shot at 95 wins.
  5. should note that Sano was pretty awful last spring... didn't seem to affect much once the season started, so I wouldn't worry about that. On the other side of things, even he is guilty, I don't see him getting the Chapman treatment for many of the reasons specified in this thread.
  6. A like just doesn't suffice for this post... it needs a love.
  7. If you want to do a make good deal, Sanchez is a far better bet than some of the guys we've seen brought into the org over the last few years. At least with Sanchez, he pitched like a #1 for a few years... maybe even an ace depending on the bazillion definitions of the term used here. While unlikely, it doesn't take smoking copious amounts of illegal substances to argue that it's possible he's healthy and able to have an above average SP season for a song... If this team wants to do something other than a playoff in the wild card game, they need their back end of the rotation to not be awful... yeah, we need the ace... but the key to winning 95 games is a bit more than not having to pray for rain in the back of the rotation.
  8. For me, I cannot have this discussion without taking into account the loss of his grandmother, whom he was very close to. He was hitting quite well (similar pace if I remember right) to his second half in the first half prior to this event. When she passed, he went into an absolutely horrible funk. It's worth noting, as I think it's quite possible that he will exceed the .723 OPS he put up last year, which is already good for a SS. I don't know if the high OPS Polanco is the real deal or not, but he hit quite well in the minors and is young enough that it is possible.
  9. unfortunately, I don't see the Twins getting a C prospect for him. Look at Morrison, who was an all star last year, and is virtually redundant as a player got in free agency. If no one wanted to shell out more than what we paid for him, they aren't going to trade a decent prospect for the rights to own a guy whose upside is probably Morrison at best. I don't dislike Vargas. He was a league average bat last year, which is hardly bad, but you don't want a league average bat at DH... He has no positional flexibility either. I think a team like the Rays picks him up on waiviers. He will get that extended shot he never got here (and that's not on Falvine). I wouldn't be surprised if he figures it out. I wouldn't be surprised if he fails. I suspect it will be somewhere in between where he posts a few .800 OPS type seasons during his expensive years.
  10. Dozier is one of my favourite players, but I don't see a need for him much beyond 2019 season at best. We have some nice MI depth, and the closest is Gordon who will likely start in AAA this season. Gordon could be ready to move into MLB this time next year, but he might also need a year... who knows. Dozier makes a ton of sense on a 1 year deal... and he rightfully isn't likely interested in that, which means that I suspect he walks... We will get a compensation pick, but that's not going to make up for his production.
  11. Keep in mind they were the number 1 offense for the entire second half of the season (or something like that)... I think they had a legit shot at top 3 without Morrison. You're right... if Polanco's problems were due to his bereavement and 2nd half Buxton is the real deal.... this is a very dangerous lineup.
  12. If anything, this locks Sano into 3B. I'm guessing the Twins think enough of Sano's conditioning thus far to sign a full time DH... He's locked into 3B now.
  13. Someone posted a very convincing article (on this site I think) recently about why his breakout is for real... I cannot find it (naturally). I guess ultimately there's some risk, but this looks like a way of spending the remaining funds they had available on sure a fire upgrade. I'd have liked it to be a pitcher, to be clear, but if they are convinced that they are done with SP upgrades, this is the next best thing. Our DH play wasn't exactly stellar last season. An .850 OPS with a legit 30+ HR power threat is a big add to a lineup that has a very real possibility of finishing in the top 5.
  14. There's a difference between taking lumps and being down right awful. I think your premise though is accurate in some cases. I see your point on Berrios in particular, though I'm not necessarily certain he was setup to succeed at all by the previous FO, and that has to be a factor in some cases... However, I think Buxton is your counter example. He was coming back from an injury that sidelined him for a season. He was doing well in AA, but not spectacular. He was asked to skip two levels. I think you can make a case that he was rushed. There's definitely something to be said about learning at the major league level, I won't argue that. I won't argue that equating failure to being rushed can be intellectually lazy. I think the converse can be as well.
  15. Pretty sure his name came up this offseason as an alternative option if pitching didn't happen. I'm not sure I like the pitching we are going north with, but this offense could be the best in baseball this year. The team is definitely better by this signing as this will help positional flexibility, the bench, and add another very dangerous bat to the lineup... While I suspect Chargois was released for this signing, I have to think Vargas is on the bubble now. Bit surprised Kennys wasn't let go if this was the corresponding move. Will Kennys get any PT other than PH?
  16. I think all of the guys you mentioned could be in that list with dominating years, but you're right in that they may all end up in that 100-150 range. I'd add Rortvedt to that list too, especially if his second half is more along the lines of what to expect. Kirilloff was top 100 prior to his injury, so I wouldn't write him off if he has a good bounce back season this year. I'd even say that a guy like Littell could find himself in the 90s on some lists if he repeats last season's results. Jay is another one that might pop in if he's healthy.
  17. That's a fair take. If they are that confident he's a top 10 guy this time next year, than yeah, I'd probably have a similar opinion. I'm not quite as confident as you are, but I hope you're right.
  18. the most interesting thing about this list is the number of guys that could be top 100 if things break favorably. There's a ton of upside here, just not much in terms of elite (minus Lewis of course). Sickles had 21 B- or better prospects. A B- by Sickles is pretty impressive as it is. I'm not sure he's ever had 21 in a system before... though to be fair, he is a Twins fan, so maybe he's a bit biased. As it is, the 1-4 guys are pretty consistently in top 100 lists. Five through seven have made appearances on at least one list, but not on all. I'd argue that quite a few people in our top 20 could end up on one or every top 100 list if things go well. Obviously, they won't all demonstrate that kind of upside, but it's really impressive to think how many players might be in the top 100 next year with likely only Gonsalves graduating.
  19. Not sure your first and second statements line up. If he's league average, he's already capable of being a 3.. at least that's how I look at it. He's got the right kind of K rate to stick in the majors. I have no grand hopes of him being an ace, but given how successful he was in his first season, I think it's fair to say he's got enough upside to be a legit starting option on most playoff teams. I too think he should get some chances to start. I don't think nerves will be an issue this year unless he takes a major step backwards this spring. I'd like to see him get 10 starts and re-evaluate from there.
  20. If his changeup is plus plus as mentioned in the article, I think calling Gonsalves a control/deception guys is unfair. We did have some kid named Santana who had quite the career off of a good changeup. Not saying Gonsalves is the next Johan, but that kind of a pitch can make for a long and above average major league career.
  21. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe this is his second option year. He will have another option next year... and given two years of injuries, he might be a 4 option guy, but I could be wrong there.
  22. I would argue that given the depth of the system at SS, trading a guy like Lewis for an ace makes sense... unless you think this kid is the next Trout. I don't think that's the case personally, and while I'm happy that the front office (thus far at least) appears to have hit a home run, this home run can be turned around to make our current team a legit playoff team. BPA works great until you find yourself rather lacking in an area. You have to supplement that area at some point, whether by FA or trades. We are at a point where we need to supplement it, and I'm not sure Lewis should be off the table in that regard if it gets us an ace.
