It's an interesting gamble... I do hope they keep him as a starter, but I woudln't mind letting him have a shot in the pen this fall. We could use someone like that. The question is whether or not they trust a rookie with 1 month of MLB experience in the post season.

yeah, and it's not like Trout plays 1B or something either. He's doing this at a defensive position. Trout deserves it until Trout stops being Trout.

It will be very interesting to see how we tackle SP this offseason. I don't think it's a conincidence that our level of play has dropped off significantly with our starters being less effective. Perez, Odorizzi, and Gibson have all turned back into pumpkins. Pineda is looking more like his old self. I definitely agree with the sentiment that you keep someone around, and that the moment, that someone is Pineda. I'm not sure I'd even consider QOing the others at this point. They've all been pretty bad as the season has worn on. The problem is what to do next. That's 2 starters for 5 spots. I could see leaving one spot to Thorpe/Smeltzer to see who emerges victorious (with the other being a depth piece for 2020)... but going with both would not be wise IMO. Free agency doesn't look all that good with really only one or two starters worth giving money to... I still think they end up trading for someone. I'm still shocked the Twins didn't try and beat the offer for Gallen... They certainly could have. Then again, I'm still shocked that the Marlins traded him.

Front Page: The Twins' Three Looming Wild Cards
diehardtwinsfan replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I think Thorpe and Smeltzer probably belong here. Both are pretty big wild cards and either could end up starting or even working out of the pen. -

I'd say Smeltzer has earned an extended look. Why not bump Perez to the pen and give Semltzer a few starts?- 18 replies

replace him with Smeltzer? I do think his pitch combo plays up better in the pen.

Did the Twins Miss Out On Zac Gallen?
diehardtwinsfan commented on Patrick Wozniak's blog entry in Patrick Wozniak's Blog
I cannot believe they traded him... must not have thought highly of him... If he pitches like that for a couple years, he'd have gotten a kings ransom.- 5 comments

I'm not sure what you're getting at here. I was talking about getting Callen from MIA. He's doing quite well this season so far in his rookie season. I don't see Miami trading him.

I tend to agree with Chief on the grade, though in fairness, big names weren't moved. I'm not qutie understanding some of that, especially the rentals. Sellers sitting on those names will see them go away for nothing this offseason. I'd have thought sellers prices would have gone down. They didn't. That said, I have to ask... when and how will we strengthen things? The farm is still strong, as we literally gave up nothing. Diaz and Davis had virtually no chance to be in the team's plans and were virtual locks to be taken in the Rule V if they were left unprotected... So Falvine did that part right. But back to my question. When and how will they strengthen things? I don't see them going hard after SP help this offseason in FA, as there's very little worth going after. Do they extend 3 QOs? I'm doubtful there too. I'm guessing two at best and even that I suspect is unlikely. Trusting Smeltzer/Thorpe for one spot would be fine, but more than that would be disastrous. That means they'll still have to make trades, and I doubt prices will be that much lower come November. I don't think they will do much to help the pen... again, part of that is due to the crap shoot found in FA and I do think that there are guys stepping up in the pen worth keeping. So when will they go all out? And how will they do it?

He's a rookie... So not only is he cheap for the next 3 seasons, giving the Marlins no reason to shed his salary, the cost to get him will be exorbitant.

It wasn't that long ago (2006) when Morneau crossed the 30 mark and was the first Twins planer in decades to do it... all of these guys and then some may cross that number this year.

He read it. You're assigning blame to the FO for Greinke putting us on his NTC despite having nothing from Greinke explaining why. You're right that he doesn't want to be here. It's the why... It's the same fallacy. It's no different than assuming Sano is lazy because he's big or whatever other big debate we have today... You're coming to a conclusion and most of what you have to back it is... well, weak.

You can certainly disagree, but I'd argue that Perez could have been that solid reliever.

I think we need to move away from calling it a conspiracy theory just for a second. That falls into the labeling category that Carole talked about in that pinned notice up top. I'm saying as a mod that this is not a smart way to argue it and one that will eventually lead down a path that will need to be squelched. Look, I believe in quite a few conspiracies... because at the end of the day, you can weigh plenty of objective evidence on them and note that what is told doesn't match up to what we know of the evidence... and people in power/influence most definitely use it as a CYA. There are plenty that fall into that range. Like you, I agree that this isn't one of them. I don't, however, think you're doing anyone any benefit by framing it in that way. All we know is that Greinke didn't want to come here. We know the Twins checked in on it. We don't know WHY Zach didn't want to come here, because he didn't tell us. There isn't much in terms of logical conclusions we can come to, so let's not try to reinforce our point by labeling our opponents.
