  1. Completely concur with the "way to early" crowd, and with Ash about adjustments like Doziers. Although there is this difference between Dozier and Park. Dozier basically hits one certain pitch to one certain place when he hits one out. Park has the power to hit any pitch out of any park in any direction. The other difference might be localized past experience, Dozier has been seeing spreads between 97 mph FB's and 82 mph breaking stuff all his career. Park has not. I have no doubt that Park can hit a mid 90's FB. In fact I doubt anyone is on a MLB roster who cannot. But the big reveal will be whether he can adjust to a much higher and much wider range of velocities. Where things went wrong for him last year was when they started to throw off speed stuff in FB counts. It produced a lot of half swings, and some that bordered on comical. While I agree that's the adjustment to make, it will surprise me if he does. And apparently it will surprise the other 29 teams in MLB.
  2. It's not quite as hard to catch up to a FB you are sitting on. But in April the guys that went north didn't get there throwing FB you are sitting on! That said, the ball does jump off his bat. That part is pretty impressive!
  3. Your post points out a major contributing factor to the Twins attaining those 103 losses last year, instead of what could have easily been 90-92. And if FalVine and their dugout babysitter can't change his ways, the chances for -90 increase significantly. Btw, you don't need to give Molitor a pass, he already has one from JP.
  4. The bad new about the last 6 years of Twins baseball, is the Minnesota Twins! The good news, in its wake comes an article like this. . As any reader of The Onion knows, the secret is to make a ridiculously impossible scenario appear to be almost plausible. Well done Sir!
  5. Molitor is being the good soldier, at little cost. Apologizing for something that you had nothing to do with, is an assured way to get support, and to deflect your heretofore critics. If in fact Molitor was responsible for Polanco being a 2B in Rochester, then Pohlad fired the wrong guy! This is only one of several times that Molitor has intimated that he makes personnel decisions. Another that comes to mind is the Rosario walking to third base fiasco. If indeed Paul Molitor has the authority to make decisions on position assignents in MiLB, and 25 man roster decisions, what pray tell does a GM, or for that matter two GM's do?
  6. What really is working against Buxton is he doesn't get to hit off of Twins pitching! Gotta cost you 5 points a year, minimum!
  7. Concur. That was my eyes only view last year, my thought about why 30 of his HR's were solo, and why I never thought he was a 3 hitter. The difference in a "clutch" hitter vs a hitter who seems not to be so isn't that the clutch hitter exceeds above his normal stats. It's that the non clutch hitter doesn't achieve his. I won't relitigate the whole Dozier trade scenarios except for this. Selling high was a good idea, and we should have. But if our goal was to trade a 42 HR guy, we were the ones who were off the mark. Remember, Dozier hitting all those dingers last year after the year was lost was akin to the guy who drains the three pointer down ten with 6 seconds left!
  8. Thanks for the history. I seldom read blogs, and my flip phone makes it difficult to post. . But checking in is a daily event. While the Twins have made following baseball difficult on more than one occasion, I think this site makes it easier to get past the depressing play in several ways. One is sort of an institutional sense of humor. And the other is one mentioned above. An overall feeling of civility, a trait seemingly in rare supply both on the Internet, and life in general. Keep up the good work!
  9. I agree with the premise of the article, and most of the content. I will say that I never thought the 2015 team over achieved as players. That would have given rationale to those 83 games. Having watched a lot of them, thanks TiVo, I saw an unreal amount of odd happenings. Critical errors by opponents, pop fly two out base hits, missing the opponents ace in four game series. It went on and on. Karma caught up to the 2016 team, and it showed. I have the 2017 Twins just shy of 80 wins. Their youth will dramatically improve this year. As you noted their relief pitching is not blocking advancements. But three problems were not adressed last year. One is easily corrected, but will still have an unknown cost. Paul Molitor. Either he does a Ying to his previous Yang, or precious developmental time will be wasted. The other two went hand in hand. SS and starting pitching. SS may have been tinkered with, but it did not solve the Polanco issue. Or do we know if Polanco will actually sit at all knowing Molitors proclivity for offense. And the SP remains a morass of #4 starters. All too easy to stick out there, too good to trade, and too bad to trade. The youth will easily drag us over 59 wins. The sad part is the failure to address th SP and manager will likely keep us under .500. Yet again!
  10. He got jerked around by his manager last year, as did several other players. He seldom started against LH pitchers, even though he had a 1.262 OPS against them. And as has been noted on this thread and others, he seems to get benched when he's hitting well. I think it would be foolish not give him a regular slot, whether that be as the 1B when a LH is pitching or to try him against everybody. Basically we do not yet know what he's capable of. Vargas' use is one of the reasons I have no confidence in this manager at all. And that "problem" remains! With guys like Vargas you have to decide whether they have the potential, and then let it come out. If a player looks at every AB as a boarding pass to Rochester, it's hard to hit!
  11. I am in the 70's. One of the unknowns: Is Molitor going to managing to save his job? Or to build for the future? The cunundrm to this is that if he plays for the future I think they win more games, but it's going to take patience. If he starts playing mediocre vets early on, he loses anyway and wastes experience time. I know this sounds a*^ backwards, but I really think if he just starts out playing his best young players, and rides it out, they will ramp up as the season progresses. If he jerks the roster around early in panic mode? We will have last year redux.
  12. I too wondered about shrinking the strike zone? More walks? More hits? More pitching changes? I have a sure fire way to shorten each game. Cut off a minute of commercials between innings. I am sure the owners would be more than happy to dispense with this small amount of revenue in the best interests of the game. (Still waiting for a response to my suggestion from Jim P.)
  13. A lot has to do with the type of swing, and if it's long, it's never going to catch up with a good FB. And if it would be easy to adjust a long swing, there would be a lot more great MLB hitters than there are currently playing. I noticed several things last year, before and after he arrived. His video from KBL showed a guy hitting some very big lollipops a very long way, kind of like a slow pitch player. And when he played here, he struggled with the FB, and hit some mistakes a long way. But then his swings and misses at breaking stuff got kind of crazy, and seemed to include a lot of half swings. It seemed he was jumping the FB, and when someone threw a off speed pitch in a FB count, he was completely fooled. As for players who came from here as high school or college kids, if you haven't shown an ability to hit a good FB at the school level, you likely won't even get drafted. It might be the number one prerequisite to get a MiLB contract as a hitter. Did I think he had enough opportunity to adjust? Not really. That would have required a trip back after a successful AAA stint. Do I think he will eventually succeed? Not really. That said, I hope he does, by all accounts he's a good guy. And one likes to see those kind of players make it.
  14. Very disappointed in this thread! So SAD! It took until post 5 for DanSan to be mentioned and that was it. One lousy mention? Not one call for his release? C'mon people, do I have to do everything by myself? . On another note, this looks like a low impact, what the H kind of a deal. I do agree with the concern about taking a spot from someone with an upside. It's going to take time to see if the new guys on the block are more apt to move out veteran mediocrity when it's time to bring in someone that has earned the promotion. To me it was one of TR's most irritating traits.
  15. The jury on Molitor may be out, but he is lucky to have the Chief Justice in his pocket! Otherwise I think the verdict would not have gone his way. But even with Molitors Maddening Managerial Malpractice this team will rise or fall on its SP, and it's corps of youngsters. I really think Buxton is going to fulfill the Buxton practice of struggling initially and then dominating. Sano will do what Sano does, hit the ball. Kepler is a sound baseball player with an upside. I don't think it's fair to expect Dozier to hit that many home runs again, in fact he would be worth more on base more often than hitting solo singers while down 4 runs. Polanco can hit, but the left side of the IF will mitigate some of their offense. The BP has arms in waiting, it can be fixed. But oh that SP!
  16. It used to be that trading Duensing was the answer to all our problems, not its DFA'ing DanSan. I just knew the new FO would make a difference! .
  17. If EE was put back into LF, even for an inning, there would be "Miss Me Yet" billboards on 35W with DanSans pic on them. Or, in other words, if anyone can make Robby G. look like a MLB outfielder, EE is the guy.
  18. This roster has been out of balance for how many years 5-6? It's been bloated with too many large, defensively decrepit players. Whether or not Park was going to fit into MLB, his acquisition made no sense on THIS roster. And that is the only criteria on which to judge signing, or keeping Park, or if one prefers Vargas, Plouffe, Morneau, et al. It's frankly not about a particular player. This team had reached the point of a NBA team with 6 centers and a point guard. While I was not at all in favor of signing Park in the first place, and had doubts he would be able to catch up to MLB pitching, I also realize that he never ended up with the chance to do so. Any chance there was the injury took care of. But that doesn't mean the Twins should not move on from him, if he makes it great for him. But someone of that ilk had to go.
  19. I really hope they don't attempt to turn Polanco into a third baseman. While you can get by with less arm overall at third, his still won't play there on stuff down the line. I also like to see more power out of that spot. Plus this year should be devoted to seeing if Sano can be a serviceable third baseman. Another year of aimlessly wandering around in the desert style lineups and I am going back to the SW corner of my moms basement!
  20. We dig out all our old Ryan quotes??
  21. The Wire is one of the best series ever! Thanks for reminding me, I think that's one I could revisit.
  22. I know how you feel. Whenever I told my wife I was going out without her I was never quite sure how she felt about it? Last week when I came back my clothes were scattered all over a snow bank. I think she was sending me a subliminal message.
  23. Whether it be Park or someone else, someone had to do something about the excess of DH/1B on the roster. I don't think DanSan is at all safe, but I think that he is a separate issue from Park/Vargas. They were not in competition for a spot. And if the choice was Park or Vargas, I would have kept Vargas also. But in no way did I see this coming. Nor do I see any sense in Napoli or Morneau. Two players I really like. This just isn't the place for them. (Unless the ticket sales dept. is in charge of the roster)
  24. And that is the reason I would not be too quick to throw Tonkin under a Greyhound! Molitor abused him at times last year. I had issues with Gardy, but at least his BP had a rough idea of what was expected.
  25. "Marginal Improvements" can be found in the Webster under "Faint Praise Indeed". :)
