Article: Jason Castro and a Cup of Coffee
Platoon replied to Jamie Cameron's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
This! There are three premier defensive positions in baseball. Catcher, SS, and CF. SS has been sort of bastardized by the incessant shifting, and launch angles, but it's still a defense first spot. As is CF. I also realize the short benches make an offense bench catcher as asset, see Garver. But your #1 guy should be glove first, and I still would prefer the second one to be the same. I know it's hard to find good catchers. And harder to find a two way one. It generally leaves you with a choice, offense or defense. It takes a lot of stick to make up for a poor glove at that position. A lot! -

Gibson likely survived due to the light on his feet Sano. That liner had double written all over it, unless it comtinued to rise and clear the fence. Yesterday looked like one of those games where you tried as hard as you could to hand someone a baseball game, and they refused to take it. I see the same old Gibby, walks, nibbling, and high pitch counts.- 60 replies

Gibsons performance was almost magical. While he didn't really get much help from the defense, he also got pretty much hammered. And last game 5 walks? He is definitely testing the theory of damage control. The good news is help is on the way. Hughes was mid season form in 5 innings, and is ready to resume his rightful position on the roster.- 60 replies

Sort of a strange lineup for opening day with a full house. 4 bench players? I know these types of lineups are common on get away day. Sometimes I think Molly has a little of the contrarian in him? -

Well if this is true, Rosario is being reprimanded I imagine. But that's simply uninformed speculation, which is highly encouraged, and practiced on GT. . But on another note, if it's true, maybe it's to keep the customers warm? Booing during the lineups generates blood flow, and heats the extremities! -

I think that raccoons have appeared previously in GT? I am sure they were included in the infamous "why did the chicken cross the road" GT from last year. If not, it was a gross oversight. I would also point out that if GT were not themselves Twisted Logic, there would be hardly anyone here. Btw, Twised Logic. Great name for a garage band. . -

I see the raccoons are possibly inflicted with distemper? Luckily I have all my shots. Speaking of, I recently was coerced into getting my very first flu shot. There were immediate results. In several days I had a headache, runny nose, burning eyes, and borderline narcolepsy. While I am glad I turned down the rabies shot, I am still concerned about the hoof in mouth one I received. -

I have been to Grand Forks. I am surprised to see a window is a negotiating point? That said, I am TiVo'ing "The Terror". Last night I was flipping between game and Terror. One show had human beings struggling in horrific weather, and the other had ships stuck in the ice. -
Nice story. . Interesting, and it certainly puts Doziers theory on bunting against the shift the other day in perspective. Btw, good thing the game was not as organized in those days. The catcher who threw the potato to third in MiLB was, I think, banned for life? Just think if the potato was loaded?

Article: BAL 3, MIN 2: Opening D’oh!

It is game one, game two is today. But game one had a considerable amount of wide open easy to analyze (second guess) managerial decisions. Thats what separates baseball from other sports.- 109 replies

Article: BAL 3, MIN 2: Opening D’oh!
Platoon replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
It is one game. But this idea of the team heroically coming back to tie is so "homerish"! It's almost impossible not to score with a kicked ground ball. (Single, lmao) two walks, and a ball hit so poorly the OF can't get to it. Yes, sometime you come back, strike the ball well, and run the bases well. But this wasn't one of them. Baltimore scored two runs for the Twins. And frankly Baltimore didn't exactly shine either. Someone said earlier that you can play well and still lose. You can also play poorly, and still win. .- 109 replies

Article: BAL 3, MIN 2: Opening D’oh!
Platoon replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The Duke decision was odd, for this game. Fresh pen, day off tomorrow, several righties. It was really odd. There are times in the heat of a season where you could get cornered into a place where Duke was the lesser of two evils. Yesterday wasn't one. And I doubt it makes some of the others in the pen feel appreciated either. Yup, they are professionals. Professional human beings. And decisions like that, over a season cause your players to wonder about their value in their managers eyes. Not over just one game, but no one has ever considered Molitor a pen management genius either.- 109 replies

Article: BAL 3, MIN 2: Opening D’oh!
Platoon replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I was surprised the Duke was left in to pitch to the RH with two on. A note on framing v blocking. Catchers call pitches, there's not a lot of framing to do if you call for a breaking ball in the dirt. And they do call for those. Buxton. Anyone who wonders why he still chases sliders down and away, never watched Tori Hunter and Cuddyer play. Both were susceptible to that pitch well into their retirement. While I didn't like the Buxton or Duke moves, I did like the 5 man infield. You win a few, lose a few. I would have sent Rodney out again in that situation. He had only thrown a handful of pitches. He was brought here to do those things. Its early in the year. A lot of players will be given a chance to make Molitors decisions for him. I am pretty sure Rodney will be one of those. But I do wonder what the vibe will be if they try and "demote" him to a 7th inning guy.- 109 replies

I am not sure the offense showed up in the ninth inning? An error? I think two walks? And a fly ball hit too poorly to catch? Well that was offensive. Btw, is it just me, or does Castro seem to use his glove way too much, and his body way too little on balls in the dirt off to his sides? One last thought. I had no problem with Buxton hitting in the bottom of the order. But, if you want him to be "the guy" then there is no way you hit for him in the ninth. I could even see it if you had a Jim Thome type, but hitting RG for him is borderline embarrassing. And, no I don't think Grossman's scorching pop up made the decision any better. Sometimes your just lucky enough to hit a ball so poorly, no one can catch it.- 109 replies

DickBert would say he is struggling slightly with his control. May I point out that few pitchers in the modern era have ever appeared in all 162 games. And no pitcher has ever hit even close to 486 hitters in a season..............and lived to tell about it! -

I thought of commenting on the bunting, but out of a profound respect for the elderly who live in the Western time zone, and can't get out of bed that early, I thought I would leave that ripe fruit for him! . -

You are lucky! When I hear my wife talk to her sister (or anyone for that matter) I envy Ryan LaMarre's job security. -
I would lean more towards Buxton as MVP. I definitely believe he will be the "straw that stirs the drink". If uninjured he will put up some very gaudy numbers, offensively and defensively. His baserunning alone will be worth the price of admission. Sano will likely put up some gaudy numbers of his own, but they will be all offensive. His average defense, and SO % will mitigate the effect of all those long flys. The difference to me is simple. Sano is a hitter, Buxton is a baseball player!

The Twins are in win now territory as far as the orginisation goes. Whether that is enough to compete league wide for the big prize is questionable. The pitching is improved thank goodness. But no one in the league is running around muttering "look at that pitching staff, omg". It's a better team than we have had. The offense should be better if the younger players keep on improving with age. There is little room for improvement from Dozier, Mauer, Castro, and EE. They could easily backslide. This is mostly the make or break roster for the Twins. BIG FA acquisitions are still not in our future, and a lot of the immediate talent is already here. We have waited for this talent to arrive, now it's time to see if the wait, was worth it?

Article: Twins Finalize Opening Day 25-Man Roster
Platoon replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
It would be another change for the Twins. After years of putting IF in the OF, we now could see OF in the IF. But taking my tongue out of my cheek, it's really not that big a deal with the ability to get someone here in a half day. None of the players discussed are actually a big bat. They are all fairly mediocre with the stick. And since it seems the Jim Thome style PH is no longer in vogue, it's not a huge difference. I will say this. If I am keeping both LaMarre and Grossman, then it begs the question why isn't one of those two, likely RG, replaced by a big RH bat? RG and RL are fairly redundant. RG in the lineup may have value as an OB guy, but you don't send up a PH to work a walk as a rule.- 41 replies
