1. All of our catchers call their own games. What you are referring to is pitch outs. Our dugout calls them, so you'll see the catcher look to the dugout then.
2. I think it'll be a tale of two halves. I think over the first half or so we'll be surprisingly competitive. Something like 38-41 and 6 GB sitting in third place. But then Ryan will trade Willingham, Morneau and maybe even Perkins and the second half will be pretty bad. 32-51 and we'll finish 70-92 and have the 4th worst record again. On the positive side, we end the season with an OF of Benson/Hicks/Arcia and all three look promising for 2014. (And our minor leaguers continue to develop).
3. According to mlbtrrumors, "The short commitment will allow Saunders to build value at pitcher-friendly Safeco Field and look for a multiyear deal again next winter."
4. Hope you're right about him. A .770 OPS would be above avg for a AL RF.
5. I tend to be an optimist but I really don't think Plouffe can handle third defensively. I wish he could handle second. I think that he and Parmelee will both have rough April's to the point that Parmelee gets sent down and he takes over RF and isn't horrible there. On the plus side, if I'm wrong and he and Parmelee can play well at the ML level, our offense will be a pleasant surprise.
6. Are you dying? :-)
7. Well, Mauer is what he is and that won't change sometimes it can be frustrating and most of the time it's probably a good thing. That said, in that game, I would have much rather have him try to hit a lefty specialist than need Willingham to have to get a hit against a tough right handed reliever.
8. ? The Twins have drafted the following pitchers in the first round over the since 2000: 2000 - Johnson (Heilman didn't sign); 04 - Fox, Waldrop, Rainville, Perkins; 05 - Garza; 08 - Hunt and Gutierrez; 09 - Gibson; 10 - Wimmers; 11 - Boyd; 12 - Berrios and Bard. Johnson, Rainville, Perkins, Garza, Hunt, Gutierrez, Gibson, Boyd, Berrios and Bard were all probably better classified as hard throwers. Fox, Waldrop and Wimmers fit more in the control category. Second round is pretty much the same, too. Slowey being the only 2nd rounder that would probably be called a control guy in that period. I think that points out how difficult making the majors is let alone finding Santana like pitchers.
9. I think it's hard to say the "shed away" from so much as didn't have as many opportunities. I mean this was the same FO that grabbed Santana, Liriano, Boof and created an incredibly hard throwing bullpen (Nathan, Crain, Rincon etc). They aren't afraid of strike outs. They jumped on Garza when they had the chance. Perkins, before his surgery, threw pretty hard. Clearly, the Twins found a market inefficiency in control guys. I'm not sure why that's a bad thing since they got a lot of production from later round control guys. Johnson has been focusing on flame throwers since 08.
10. Not a big surprise. I guess I wouldn't have been shocked if he had Berrios behind Kepler or May but it's not really a big problem. May - a top 100 prospect last year and who just threw 150 innings at AA with over 150 strike outs is our #10 prospect. Really, really nice depth.
11. Maybe, but the players that worked with Vavra spoke highly of him too - specifically Morneau and Kubel. Joe Benson, in 2011, had a break out year in AA (his second go around in it) that he credited Bruno for. But in 2012, when they were both at AAA, Benson was horrible. But Parmelee broke out in AAA in 2012 (after a solid if not great year in AA) and he had said Vavra helped him a lot in his brief time in the majors in 11. But then struggled in the majors in 12 under Vavra.
12. After his rookie season, he changed agents - to ARod's agent - and started hanging out with him in Miami in the offseason. Deadspin had a NSFW article on that.
13. I think coaching tends to be overrated in baseball. It can help unlock talent, esp in the minors (for instance, Cueller teaching Santana the change-up) but I don't think the coaches can do much about making Mastro or Floriman into hitters or turn Deduno into a control artist. I hope I'm wrong. I do wonder if having Bruno around will make a difference for a guy like Parmelee, if for no other reason than Parmelee might be comfortable around him. I know Morneau swore by Varva (and Varva is still around so I imagine player that feel more comfortable with him will still seek him out). I liked all the promotions but I think their net effect will be slim. Beckmt might be right that having a spanish speaking coach can't hurt and might make it easier for some of our Latin American pitchers.
14. I think I'm rooting for Berrios more than any other prospect we have. Just to add though, a few mocks had him going in the end of the first round and some Rangers and Yankee fansites really wanted them to grab Berrios. So the Twins certainly didn't reach to draft him first in the supplemental. Nice pick for us.
15. Scouts haven't really been that high on Rosario's power as you. He had a ton of power in rookie ball but his ISO fell .150 points when he went up to A ball. There are plenty of players in our system with better power than him - Sano, Vargas, Arcia, Walker, Hicks, Kepler, Harrison to name a few. I tended to think Rosario was pretty overrated by our fanbase which was one reason I was so happy to see Klaw rank him so high but he still should be our 7th best prospect. And the comparison to Hicks doesn't really hold up either. At 18, both were in rookie ball and Hicks was the better player. At 19, Rosario repeated the level while Hicks was promoted to A ball (and ranked #39 by BA). At 20, Hicks repeated Aball (and was ranked #19) while Rosario was promoted there. Hicks had the better season overall at age 20. Hicks down year was as a 21 year old at A+.
16. I think his order is about right, too. I don't have insider but can someone tell me what he general opinion of Hicks was?
17. I guess I'm one of the few that actually hopes Appel drops to us. He'd instantly be our #1 pitching prospect, and unlike a few other guys near the top, no question of whether he can stay a starter. I argued with Pirate fans last year over this but I don't think Appel/Boras made a mistake. They made a gamble, for sure, but one that they are likely to profit from. And while I don't really like Boras, I think he's one of the few people around baseball that is capable of fighting the owners for more money. Baseball's worth has increased faster than player salaries and I think too many owners (esp ours) keep payrolls far lower than what they can really afford.
18. Nice write up. I really like May's endurance. Nice to see him capable of throwing so many innings. Hopefully the Twins can help him a bit with control. If he could harness that stuff, we'd have a really nice young pitcher there.
19. True. But he was also a big supporter of Rosario and Arcia before others. It'll be interesting to see how where those 7 guys place in his top 100.
20. This is a pretty bad post. The racism charge, even if you aren't brave enough to claim it, is insulting. On the plus side, that means we can ignore the rest of your ranting.
21. I think it might be too late on the immigration, at least for this generation. If any sort of CIR gets passed, the democrats and Obama are going to get the credit. And if it fails, conservatives will get the blame. I know Latinos do some things that suggest they should be conservative voters - go to church, family values - but when you start working in those communities you see that they just don't trust the conservatives. They think they're racist. And it's not like democrats can't support church/family values Latino voters, since the dems are the ones pushing for more money for schools, social safety nets etc. If the republicans support immigration reform, they'll end up supporting a structure that, at least in the short term, will make states like Arizona and Texas purple and making FL, CO, NV even more blue. My guess is that CIR gets hung up over the path to citizenship issue. But it's going to be a blast to watch.
22. Thanks for posting that Steve. Nice to hear about Eddie still hitting.
23. More on the farm system. In his fangraphs chat today, Mike Newman was asked: Regarding the AL Central, which team do you think has the best prospects, which has the worst? http://cdnsl.coveritlive.com/templates/coveritlive/images/icons/fb_share2.png
12:14
Mike Newman: Worst is still the Chicago White Sox and will continue to be for the near future at least. As for the best, Minnesota hands down. They have a ton of talent in the low minors and traded for a bunch more. It's a sneaky good system right now.
