  1. I think Hicks should start the season in AAA and stay there until the bat comes around. Maybe give up switch hitting (although at this late stage I really don't think it'll help). But the Twins should not expect anything out of him until he hits more.
  2. I really don't though. It's a heck of a coincidence that the value of that injury just happened to be the over slot signing bonus of a different player (in this case, Mac Marshall). Previous UCL concerns (RA Dickey for example) had lowered bonus money a few hundred thousand, not millions. I think the Astros went into the draft thinking they could sign Aiken cheaper than what they had agreed on and get those two extra players. And since all three were represented by the same agent, the agent would go along with it.
  3. I don't think there is a (relevant) thing to be learned in a 3 game series, be it in May or October. The important thing is to look at why your team is successful (or not successful) over a full season. And you are the only person who has even referenced luck in this whole thread.
  4. Good post, two small points. Ryan wasn't GM in 2010 and Smith did offer Ramos and Hicks for Lee. Seattle took the Rangers offer.
  5. And yet, since 2010, the Twins have a winning record in NY. Seems silly to put too much emphasis on six games out of 162. And the AL East wasn't always the end-all be-all division. The 02 West had three teams with 93 wins or more - naturally, Twins had a winning record against everyone but Oakland (who they beat in the playoffs). And the ****ty division thing is always thrown at the Twins but is it true? The 05 White Sox pretty darn good and crushed the post season. But it took them three years to get past the Twins. The 06 Central had 3 90 win teams and the stat heads like Cleveland even more. The 2010 team was plain good. The recent AL central teams - Tigers and Royals - have won while coming out of a weak division (as have teams like the Cards in certain years as well).
  6. I would hope he doesn't give a minute of thought to 6 five game series and 1 seven game series. They tell you next to nothing and trying to make a cumulative case out of all seven is a fool's errand. If they make the playoffs, they are good enough to win in the playoffs.
  7. Glad to see him get the invite. The team really seems to like him. Every mention of him from team officials seems to mention his work ethic.
  8. Guess it depends on how liberal you are with the "Ace" definition. Bumgarner was a 4 WAR pitcher last year (his best year), which wasn't even top 10 in the NL. If he was an ace, so was Hughes. The 2013 Red Sox had a great half season from Clay Bucholtz but Lester and Lackey were nothing special. The 2011 Cards had 4 starters make 30+ starts, Carpenter was the best (11-9, 3.45 era, 237ip, 108 ERA+, 3.5 WAR, 7.2 k/9). etc, etc Ryan is right, we need a bunch of solid starters. It's good that Ryan isn't pursuing some false statement that sounds like it should be right and is instead focusing on what is actually needed.
  9. Dayton Moore sure got a better haul.
  10. Assuming there isn't a spot in the rotation for him right away, should Meyer pitch in the pen or as a starter in AAA?
  11. On Kepler, the last fangraphs prospect guy had a similar view on him but cautioned he needed a lot of at bats. Fortunately, the Twins seem to get that. They sent him to the AFL twice and are getting him tons of ABs. And they are a patient organization - look how long it took Plouffe to figure things out.
  12. I think the FO might make a trade or two but I don't think they are going to make any more big FA signings.
  13. I like this pick, I might have gone with Cody Martin over Graham. Still, I like the idea of seeing what we might have in Graham. A pitcher coming back from injuries does have some red flags but if he does come all the way back, he could be pretty good. If not, he could be a strong pen piece.
  14. http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/news/prospects/index.jsp The easy way to access their prospect stuff is to just type in www.mlbpipeline.com - that's the front page for all the minor league stuff, including the rule v draft.
  15. That said, Berardino tweets that the Twins are on Graham
  16. My guess is that the Twins take DeShields if he's there when they pick, if not, they'll nab one of the Atlanta pitchers (Martin or Graham).
  17. Cody Martin - also from Atlanta - could be a good fit. Twins drafted him previously. He put up pretty solid numbers in AAA last year (10th in k/9 among starters) and the Twins would have seen him a few times since he's in the international league.
  18. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2014/12/starter-rumors-hamels-red-sox-scherzer.html Have already had meetings in SD about the former Phillies starter. On the plus side, Kendrick has been somewhat durable the last two years, making 62 starts. Other than that though, he sort of meets a stereotype. Fastball sits around 89. He's posted below average numbers in the NL (although his home park is tough on pitchers). He doesn't strike out a lot of people. If you trust WAR, you won't like him. I like him as AAA depth but I'd rather the Twins just gave May, Meyer, Milone a shot at the 5th spot than this guy.
  19. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2014/12/diamondbacks-listening-to-offers-for-wade-miley.html Entering his arb years, Miley hasn't quite been as good as his strong rookie year but he's been durable and probably wouldn't cost one of our top 5 prospects. He's a lefty and a ground ball pitcher but has decent strike out numbers (in the NL). I have no idea what Arizona needs/wants but Ryan should be looking into this. Miley isn't an ace or #2 (he was never a top 100 prospect) but he's a durable, solid innings eater who is affordable.
  20. I believe it is tomorrow morning.
  21. I wouldn't be too upset with Santana but he's not my first choice. I'd still prefer Masterson. Santana is one of the few pitchers where "rest it" worked and he didn't need TJ surgery. That was like 6 years ago and he's made 30 or more starts every year since then so clearly he'll blow his elbow out the second he puts on the uniform. I do like him though and he would be a pretty nice #3 pitcher but having him might mean that May and Meyer start in AAA and Milone in the pen (Hughes, Gibson, Santana, Nolasco, Pelfrey to start in April.) That's not great but not entirely bad either - the team will need SP depth. Last year they had 9 pitchers make at least 5 starts, the year before it was 10 different pitchers. So depth is good.
  22. Can we just trade Mauer for Morneau?
  23. Obviously, his salary - 23.5/y for 4 more seasons - makes him unlikely to become a Twin. Rumors indicate that the Phillies would not expect the Red Sox to kick in top prospect Swihart (#24 on mlb's rankings) so maybe the Phillies are more concerned about lowering payroll anyway they can. They have some bad contracts on that team. I think if the Twins wanted to, they could make a pretty nice package out of prospects and cost controlled MLers.
  24. Was this thread created by the mods to catch trolling, fighting and abusive language between members?
  25. Man, I always thought people ripped Gardy for not being nice enough to Mauer.
