  1. Depends on his role. Shouldn't be brought in as a starter but I'd be ok with a 4th OFer role.
  2. http://espn.go.com/blog/sweetspot/post/_/id/53243/look-for-rockies-to-trade-carlos-gonzalez Gonzalez is due another 53m over the next three seasons, covering his age 29-31 years. He's a LFer who, when healthy, is solid defensively. His numbers are somewhat Coors field affected (for both good and bad) and his LH swing might not be ideal for TF, but he should still, if healthy, be a real good bat. The "if healthy" is the key. He's only played in 180 games the last two seasons and managed a .276/.338/.527 line in that time. But when he has been healthy, he's been pretty good, putting up 4+ WAR seasons and hitting the ball with real authority while stealing 20+ bases. The Rockies want cost controlled starting pitching so a deal would have to be made around Alex Meyer (or Berrios, depending on who the Rockies like more) and probably a lesser prospect. And, of course, the Twins would be making a big salary increase which seems equally unlikely.
  3. Admittedly, I'm one of the few guys who like AJ but it's things like this that make me like him: http://thebaseballcodes.com/2014/10/16/fall-down-go-boom-playoffs-meet-a-j-pierzynski/
  4. Well, I like the choice. Molitor seems to be a smart baseball guy and the young guys coming up respect him a lot. Good luck to him.
  5. At the time, he was just horrible in ST and the AAA roster was pretty set - Meyer, May, Johnson, Pino ... I forget who else. There was a lot of talk that he was going to have to go to AA, like Gilmartin. It's also possible the team didn't want his attitude in AAA around Meyer and May - the baseball prospectus guys have talked about that in general - not specific to the Twins - about how teams try and keep disgruntled players from being around top prospects. It's also possible that the FO was doing Worley a favor by sending him to a team in the NL that would give him time in AAA instead. Since I imagine the Twins thought he was pretty much useless. So it's not surprising that they didn't want to hold onto that. Obviously, he got better in Pit.
  6. I don't think it's that uncommon. Scott Diamond was a rule v guy who put up a 2.5 WAR season the year after we got him. Sam Deduno was a lifetime journeyman we got for nothing and he managed a 1.5 WAR season in 2013. This year, the Astros nabbed someone named Collin McHugh off of waivers and he responded with a great season and over 4 WAR. Years ago, Toronto gave up on a guy named Esteban Loaiza, who signed with the White Sox and put up a 7 WAR season and starting some "White Sox pitching coach is a genius" stories. What happened with Worley is a problem but I don't know how and where to put the blame. Was he pitching hurt for us? Did our guys not notice a mechanical flaw? Is he a NL guy? When we got him, I thought he was going to be a solid back of the rotation guy for us. That was clearly not the case. But he's also not a great pitcher. He's never exceed 135 innings in a season. He's a backend guy. Those types can catch fire for a season and the Twins, under Ryan, have made a bunch of pick ups like that as well.
  7. That's a pretty solid list of non-HOFers. I'm a big hall guy so I'd be happy if some got in. Especially Oliva, who was a clear HOF talent but just had a short peak.
  8. I don't think Buxton is injury prone. If I remember correctly, he hurt his wrist when he was hit by a pitch - that's not really his fault and I think minor league pitchers might be a bit hyped to face him and lose a little control. Anyhow, as long as he doesn't get a concussion from a HBP, I won't worry too much. He re injured the same wrist sliding into a base but maybe the wrist was still tender? The OF collision wasn't his fault, the LFer shouldn't have crushed him. And this injury was just sorta freaky and shouldn't affect him long term. He needs more rest but he'll be fine.
  9. The Twins weren't better and the Yankees had a better record despite under performing their pyth w/l while the Twins out performed theirs. The Yankees easily had the better pitching (esp with Nathan on the DL). If Morneau was healthy you might be able to argue that the Twins offense was better but he wasn't and they weren't. And the Yankees match up was about the worse one we could have gotten since our main offensive threats at that point were all lefties who were shut down by CC and Pettitte. Span, Mauer, Kubel and Thome went 8 for 43 in that series.
  10. Well, if you want to go there, the Twins opponents in the post season haven't been just good teams - they've generally been monsters. Gardy's opponents averaged 101 wins each year, to the Twins 92. That's a huge difference. The only series Gardy lost where the Twins were the better/favored team was the 06 A's. In contrast, Maddon had a 96 win team knocked out in the first round to a 90 win team and his playoff teams avg 94 wins while their opponents avg 93.
  11. Nice to see. I'll be happy with either of these guys. Still think it'll be Molitor.
  12. Those rate stats are out of context. Buehrle threw 140 more innings and over 2 WAR/season better.
  13. Not to disrespect John, who certainly has his HOF supporters, but Buehrle is the better pitcher. It's not quite a fair comparison as pitcher's in John's day pitched a lot more innings but, when comparing to era, Buehrle comes out ahead. In 26 seasons, John finished top 10 in IP 4 times. Buehrle managed it 7x in 15 seasons. Including leading the league twice. John's ERA+ is a solid 111, Buehrle's is 117. By WAR, Buehrle was about 1.5 WAR/season better, avg nearly 4 WAR every year (w/5 top 10 finishes), while John avg about 2.4 WAR (and 4 top 10 finishes in 11 more seasons). Buehrle was also an all star more often and won a few gold gloves as well.
  14. https://twitter.com/DarrenWolfson/status/526405807345127424 So looks like the Jays will make Buehrle available. The future HOFer (yep) is due 19m next year but Twins have long admired him. Buehrle only has one year left on his contract so the return probably wouldn't have to be huge to get him, esp if the Jays are hoping for salary relief. Jays are an old team and sorta stuck in that crappy .500 ish range.
  15. What free agents has Maddon attracted? I'm not sure that's a good measure anyway but a lot of guys that played under Gardy have wanted to come back to him after they've left. As for the "most out of each player" thing, I've mentioned before that the hardballtimes and WSJ did a study on best managers a few years back using three criteria: one run records, overachieving/underachieving pyth w/l records and players performance before and after leaving said manager. Gardy was #1. In any event, I'm still leaning Molitor b/c I think he has a better baseball mind than Maddon and he also has a good relationship with Buxton and Sano. I kind of worry that Maddon is opting out to get paid before his value as a manager declines.
  16. Wow, that's horrible. Prayers to his family. Poor guy.
  17. http://thinkprogress.org/culture/2014/10/23/3583347/felicia-day-gamergate/ Anyone following this "gamersgate" thing? Apparently some idiots have been releasing a lot of personal information about female game developers along with death and rape threats. Felicia Day said "that's not nice" and within minutes her address was posted online. Chris Kluwe wrote a nice piece on these guys, although the language in it might offend some. https://medium.com/the-cauldron/why-gamergaters-piss-me-the-f-off-a7e4c7f6d8a6
  18. I think the Twins job would be a great opening for nearly all managers and Maddon would be nuts to not want it. BUT he likely has better options/more money elsewhere. He'll get 5-6m or more a year and the Twins aren't going to spend that on a manager. (Heck, they won't spend that on a LFer next year). I still think it'll be Molitor but Lovullo could get it.
  19. Why do people think he's a good manager? I'm not saying he isn't but I'm wondering what they are basing it on. His teams actually under perform their pyth w/l records. He shifts a lot but most of that is supposed to come from the FO and he just implements it. His record in one run games changes a bunch year to year (like most managers). Success with a small payroll team? Good clubhouse atmosphere? Development of young players? Developing scrappy teams that fight? I think all of those things have their pros and cons.
  20. I would imagine that Maddon and Friedman already have an agreement in place. In fact, I think some Rays fans are already complaining about collusion.
  21. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2014/10/joe-maddon-opts-out-of-contract-with-rays.html Interesting. I think this makes a lot of sense for Maddon, who is generally considered a top manager in the game. The Rays are moving backwards and Maddon could probably get a better job (Dodgers?) fairly quickly. The other question would be, would the Twins and Maddon be a fit?
  22. Give Ryan this: he will absolutely fall on the sword for the payroll instead of saying something bad about the Pohlad family.
  23. La Russa drank and drove and had it covered up. Cox beat up his wife. Weaver was an ****** of the highest order. Billy Martin was worse. Most managers have been unfaithful to their wives. Molitor's off the field stuff doesn't matter to me at all so long as it doesn't affect his on the field managing.
  24. A lot of very good managers have stayed at one place for over 10 years with great results - La Russa, Cox, Torre all just went into the HOF. Weaver. Sparky. Whitey. Both TK and Gardy had good runs. Sciocia in LA. Bochy is on his 8th year in SF and Baker had a good 10 year run prior to that. Longterm stability in the manager isn't a bad thing. That said, I think Molitor gets the job, hangs around for a few years and then it goes to Dougie Baseball.
  25. Is this one of those moderator created threads to gather up all the trolls in one place?
