  1. He'll be back.
  2. Ryan's winning percentage by itself is less than useful in determining whether or not he is capable of the job at hand because it deliberately ignores the issues specific to the Twins during his tenure that no other GM dealt with. Using similar logic, someone could "factually" argue that since the Pohlad family took over the Twins only the big market Yankees and Red Sox have won more World Series.
  3. Man, Garza's been in the majors for a long time now and still hasn't turned into an ace.
  4. Of the two, run differential gives a better sense of the teams future for a number of reasons. I mentioned many times during the season that the more important things instead of the record was the development of young players like Gibson, Arcia, Hicks, May, Meyer, Buxton etc and to see if Plouffe and Dozier were really real players.
  5. Ryan engineered the team to be contracted? He dismantled MacPhail's championship teams? Twins fans don't care about winning? Either you don't know what you're talking about or you are deliberately trying to provoke. Most would call it pretty obvious trolling. Let's see, what teams are we supposed to be looking at? Baltimore in 2012 had their first winning season in 14 years. Rays in 2008 had their first in 10 years (and after having six winning seasons, are going the other way again). Tigers in 2006 had their first winning season in 12 years and 2009 they had another winning season. Royals in 2013 had first winning season in forever. Mariners in 2014 had their first winning season since 2009 (which was a fluky season). Rangers in 2009 managed their first winning season since 04 (and second since 99). I suspect you are trying to argue that a losing team can have a winning season but to do so you pretty much have to ignore all relevant facts and merely say "well, see, Baltimore had a losing record and now they have a winning record so it must be that easy."
  6. I figure the Twins are more or less on the normal path of rebuilding, sans throwing a sacrificial lamb to the masses. Honestly, what did other teams do? Every team in the AL has gone through these cycles - good for a bit, bad for a bit. Except for those who could buy their way out of it. What the Twins are doing is no different than what other teams do. They bring up young players, hope they catch on, augment with FA signings. Ryan has done it before and is doing it now.
  7. He won't be. Some voters might also not vote for him simply b/c of overstuffed ballots as well. But he could end up with the highest voting percentage of any position player, which currently belongs to Cal Ripkin at 98.5%, IIRC.
  8. I don't think any team would claim Goodrum and stash him on their ML roster. I wouldn't give up a 40 man space for him.
  9. Man, he's lived a pretty good life. Last game at home, tie game, bottom of ninth. Walk off single. http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/gameday/index.jsp?gid=2014_09_25_balmlb_nyamlb_1&mode=recap_home&c_id=nyy
  10. Someone will find a way ....
  11. True, but Mauer greatly under performed and they do have two legit big time offensive prospects coming up in the near future. I think they have the pieces to form a pretty good (i.e. playoff caliber) offense. Some of the pieces will be different but ....
  12. http://deadspin.com/espn-suspends-bill-simmons-three-weeks-over-goodell-cri-1638842937 For criticizing Roger Goodell.
  13. http://deadspin.com/attorneys-in-the-jameis-winston-case-are-going-after-ea-1638746467 Great article about the Winston civil case. The lawyers have decided to be a bit argumentative. Remember, us lawyers have 3 extra years of schooling to be this professional.
  14. Because you have no way of knowing if the reasons for their success are because of what the article presents or for different reasons. History shows that most teams will go through cycles, the GMs that know their stuff are the ones that can extend these cycles by turning over the right players and building around others. Something the Pirates haven't shown an ability to do. Look at the Rays. They started winning and they were the smartest FO ever. Now they are back in a down cycle with not a lot going right for them. And you want to complain about drafts? Look at their 2011 draft. They had 11 picks in the top 75 of what was at the time consider one of the great draft classes (that may have turned out to be untrue. Top heavy but maybe not a lot of depth). Today none of those 11 has made the majors, none are in any top 100 (in fact, the Rays have one of the worst farm systems in baseball with no guys in mlb.com's top 100) and the Rays are in that ugly "not quite good, not quite bad" phase while trading off guys like Price.
  15. I think the Reusse and Souhan pieces were linked. Here's the Miller piece - http://www.startribune.com/sports/twins/276868431.html Miller talks about the process to build a team and points out the Puckett, Hrbek groups and the late 90s groups of players. Then he continues: "Which is great news, and terrible news, for the Twins. The potential superstars are in the pipeline, and while Twins fans have heard their names for two or three years now, all that has changed during this injury-riddled minor-league season in the timeline. The Twins are developing five of the 50 most promising prospects in baseball, Baseball America judged at midseason, three of them pitchers, and that’s not even counting the young players who already have arrived in Minnesota and begun producing. But in the meantime, Minnesota has been stricken with a sobering realization: This is what rebuilding looks like. What else did we expect?"
  16. The only opinion that matters is the Pohlads and they have never shown a tendency to let PR affect their position. They trust TR and so I expect he'll stay.
  17. A few years ago, HBT tried to measure managers using bullpen usage, how players performed before and after leaving and record in one run games. Gardy came out #1.
  18. Two winning seasons after 20 losing years and you want to use them as the role model? In a couple years, we're going to be reading articles about how smart the Twins were for building through the minors and not panicking, etc, etc. Hell, Dayton Moore is starting to get good press.
  19. I said before that I think he somehow trades Nolasco this offseason and I'll stick to that.
  20. I agree somewhat. But Berrios age and his sky rocketing up prospect lists probably push him over May.
  21. I assume this is hitter and pitcher of the year but your paragraph says "of the month." Berrios was the obvious choice but May had a tremendous season at AAA and a few others had some nice and surprising seasons. Not a terrible year for our pitchers, despite Meyer's somewhat disappointing season. For hitter, Vargas is a good choice, I suppose. Kind of a rough year for our hitters.
  22. Oh, c'mon. You can't seriously be arguing drjim's point. Look at the comments sections in the Startribune. How many people thought Mauer wasn't a good player when he was posting a .400 OBP? The normal guy on the street (or on the internet) don't have a clue on how to construct or run a baseball team.
  23. I think there are a few points you aren't giving enough weight to. First, Suzuki and the Twins have made a commitment to each other. If Suzuki were leaving as a FA, I'd agree with you. But teams don't generally bench starters who they expect to be starting the following years. That's not just the Twins, it's all teams. Secondly, as someone noted, Suzuki has some incentives in his contract. Gardy (and probably the FO) doesn't want the bad will (and potential grievances) by a player claiming the team is benching him so they could save money. Lastly, I suspect guys in the locker room (young and old) want to see the team let players reach incentives in their contracts, so it's good on Gardy to make it happen.
  24. I think Bradley missed half the season with an elbow injury.
  25. No idea, but I'm just some idiot on a message board. More importantly, the quotes above from Gardy and Ryan seem to think it does. And I imagine he'll be working on it in winter ball as well. Also, I'm not as high on Pinto as some are. And I certainly could be wrong - I thought Arcia wouldn't make it to the majors. (Although I was right on Benson/Revere arguments).
