  1. You think it should be lower? Or higher? The unhappy truth is Mauer isn't going to get better and break out. He's a .280/.350/.370 hitter and there really isn't a lot of reasons to expect that to get better.
  2. Considering the bazooka you shot at Hunter, I'm not sure you should be complaining about Mauer taking a few potshots.
  3. The always fun Souhan has an article up on the Twins. He credits Molitor, Hunter and Perkins for the Twins improved play. He notes that the Twins are winning despite not having the young future players up yet, Mauer not doing much and nothing from Nolasco/Santana on the mound. "Hunter has brought life to the clubhouse, which has translated to increased gamesmanship and competitiveness on the field. Molitor has shown a knack for benching slumping players and seeing them improve immediately upon return. Perkins has performed to his All-Star standards while leading a surprisingly effective bullpen." Just your standard puff piece but a fun read anyway.
  4. It's not the player's development we're losing but the development of the farm system. I think the assumption is that the Twins could/should pass on #6 this year and get the better player next year at #7, since that's a better draft. But that isn't how it'll work. There's no guarantee that #7 next year will be better than #6 this year. The fact that we could draft a college ready player next year at 7 over a HS player at 6 this year doesn't really matter since the development of the system itself is still delayed. Again, look at Houston. They had 3 100 loss seasons and right now they have a middle of the road ranked system. The system might get better after this draft or it might not but right now the system isn't in as good a position to help the major league club as it could have been by adding more talent at #1 last year (and this is a different discussion than picking the right talent at #1 last year). So even if the Twins thought the BPA in the draft was there at 6, if they didn't think they could sign him, it wouldn't make sense to draft him.
  5. You are missing a couple things. First, you are really under estimating the cost of a lost year of player development. Because so many prospects don't make it, that year of development it huge. Whoever we get at #7 next year will still be another year away from helping the Twins, even if he is a fast riser. And since prospect burn out is so high, punting a year doesn't make sense. Second, "poor draft" isn't quite right. McDaniel posted something on this but generally when we talk about a draft being poor or good, it's just the first 15 picks or so, after that, all drafts are the same. So it's more important to get the pick right than pass on it and try again a year later with a later pick. Moving down one pick and one year is significantly worse than the pick value at 6 this year. Houston is a pretty good example of mucking up drafts. For whatever reasons, they haven't drafted that well. They are obviously kicking themselves over last years pick, even though they get #2 in this year's draft. But it wouldn't have taken much common sense to have picked Buxton, Bryant and Rodon and still have this years #4 pick. The first three will be in the majors this year and they could have gone a ton of ways with the #4 pick. Instead, they don't have much return for their picks yet (although Correa looks great) and don't have much room for error with these two picks in a "down draft."
  6. http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=26310 Most of this is behind a paywall but the write up on Berrios is not. They see some nice things with him - "Berrios is the most impressive arm I've seen through the season's first month. In Friday's start against Jackson, his fastball was 92-95 and touched 96 with late riding life. He paired it with two present above-average secondaries that flashed plus potential."
  7. I agree. It used to seem more like tradition than anything. But now it's steeped into questionable nationalism and that rubs me the wrong way.
  8. They'd probably have a number in mind anyway and know it before hand. If he goes to school (the Aiken or Appel route) the Twins would have the #7 pick in next years more loaded draft class. But I don't think the Twins would draft him unless they were sure they could sign him.
  9. Very good write up, Jokin. On Harrison, I see that he's already been HBP 6x which leads the Southern League. Can I assume he crowds the plate? Does he wear armor on his elbow as well? Buxton over the last 15 games - .344/.408/.639 7bb, 12k, 2 2b, 53b and 2HR. And 5 stolen bases Sano over the last 10 games - .314/.386/.657 6bb against 9k. 3 2b and 3HR. .308 babip. We knew it would take a while for the two of them to shake off the rust but I think we're starting to see what the future holds. It looks great. I don't think it's a coincidence that Chattanooga went from a losing record to first place since those two got hot. I really love this team. Buxton/Sano are the clear crown jewels but Harrison (.940 OPS over his last 10), Walker, Kepler and Polanco are all really fun prospects to watch and see break out.
  10. DBacks - some underslot deal w/kid who should go around #20 (could happen) Houston - Cameron on a below slot deal (could happen) Col - Swanson - (McDaniel reports that he might be #1 on Col board) Tex - Tate (could happen) Houston - Tucker or Bregman over Rodgers? (Could happen, Klaw reported that Houston is off of Rodgers for some reasons. Maybe he's represented by Close?). Yeah, it's hard to see Rodgers falling past four.
  11. One of the reasons I think maybe they should just promote his Mark Appel. Appel was getting crushed by A+ pitching last year - his numbers were worse than Meyer's. But a promotion to AA got him better by leaving a bad environment for him. Now I don't think Rochester is the same launching pad that Appel was in (Texas, I think?) but he isn't this bad. Some other factor - injury, off the field, bad coaching, mistrust - is clearly affecting him. Alex Meyer is a big piece of the Twins future, if he can deliver. He might not be the ace we want but Kiley McDaniel suggested last week that he could still be a two plus pitcher with spotty control and an effective #3 starter. (IE, when he's on, he's on but he'll have some bad outings as well). I think it's best if he at least gets a taste of the majors and is reminded that the fans, the FO and his team mates are all very excited about having him pitch at the ML level.
  12. 2.2ip, 9h, 8er, 1 bb, 2k. He is not having a good season. I wonder if he'd be better off just working out of the ML bullpen for a bit, getting confidence and getting some starts at the end of the year. But AAA is not working for him this year.
  13. I would be so happy if that became a problem.
  14. That was a really nice read and shows a lot why Hunter is so respected around baseball. Good link!
  15. A couple. By game score, his two best outings were last year - aug 26 against KC 7ip, 3 3h, 6k, 0runs and Sept 16 against Det, 8ip, 5h, 5k, 0 runs. He actually pitched pretty well at the end of the year last year. Hopefully he starts a nice little run again.
  16. That is great because McDaniel is fairly stingy with his praise. Glad he put up that kind of outing with Ryan in attendance.
  17. http://m.mlb.com/news/article/123260340/rockies-john-axfords-son-throws-out-first-pitch-vs-dodgers John Axford's son threw out the first pitch yesterday. The young kid was recovering from two serious snake bite wounds and is still in a wheelchair. Axford is the Rockies closer. His son got bit while in AZ for spring training. Hopefully, his recovery continues.
  18. I hate nationalism. That guy complaining is an idiot and hopefully the FO doesn't over react to it.
  19. I think both of these are fair points. I don't think Gardy was a bad manager but a new voice in the clubhouse might have made a difference.
  20. Sure, they could have the same record. Gardy had them at something like 23-21 last year. He was a good manager. I think the main differences between a Gardy-run team and Molitor-run team would have been how we used Santana. I think Gardy would have kept him in CF and Escobar at short. There would have been smaller differences as well but that would have been the big one.
  21. I like Hooper a lot but he'd be a real reach at 6. Wish we had another pick around 32 again, like we did with Berrios. Although he might not fall that far.
  22. Come on. Your first comment is just something you made up and then you slammed the Twins for following that line of thought. And the Twins have drafted a ton of power arms under Deron Johnson - Burdi, Cederoth, Jones, Stewart, Bard, Meltakes, Hunt, Guttierez, Bullock, Tootle, Bashore etc. One could argue that the Twins had more success drafting the control guys under Radcliff.
  23. Mike's right. He'll get a few more starts so we might as well hope he turns it around. It would be nice if Meyer or someone would start pressing him but until then, he'll get those starts.
  24. http://www.nytimes.com/2015/05/09/sports/bill-simmons-and-espn-are-parting-ways.html?_r=0 ESPN won't renew him when his contract runs out in Sept. I used to like him quite a bit but over the last few years he's become pretty basketball heavy and I don't care about that sport so I've stopped reading him as much. His Q&A mailbags could be fun but that's about it for me anymore. He's apparently been a pretty big "behind the scenes" guy at ESPN and built up Grantland (which I do read more often). Grantland will stay with ESPN. I'm sure he'll have tons of suitors trying to get him to come aboard but leaving ESPN will certainly impact his reach a bit.
