  1. NL sucks. Go with Sale.
  2. Good for him. I haven't read any updated scouting reports on him but he certainly dominated A+ ball. Glad that he'll get a shot at AA. And he's still only 21.
  3. I think we should have a better understanding of that history, though. From 95(?)-07, the draft was under Radcliff and Ryan, and those drafts were pretty good, with the team nailing a lot of non-first round picks even in drafts where they missed in the first round. From 08-11 it was under Johnson and Smith. And from 12-present, it was under Johnson and Ryan (with input from Radcliff). I think the Johnson/Smith drafts were pretty bad. They've drafted better since 2012 but that might be because they drafted in the top of the rounds but they've nabbed some interesting players late - Berrios, Gonsalves, Duffy, Burdi, Cabbage, Benninghof. So that might be Johnson getting better at his job or more input from Ryan/Radcliff than before. Johnson has a bit of a different philosophy than Radcliff did (although this is just in generalizations). Johnson appears to want velocity whereas Radcliff targeted control. (Again, it's not a perfect example as Radcliff nabbed guys like Garza and Durbin and others and Johnson took Wimmers and Eades but generally, that does seem to be a difference). Both Johnson and Radcliff love the toolsy HS prep bat (for good reason, obviously). The Twins have increased their scouting in the SE under Johnson and taken several GA and FL HS bats (Buxton, Gordon, Goodrum, Baddoo). So I imagine they'll continue to do that. In any event, since 2012, the Twins minor league farm system has greatly improved. I expect that the Twins will pick a pretty big talent next year and I'm not as worried about that pick even though the Michael pick didn't work.
  4. Well, true. But we've also heard a lot of ancient stories from a variety of stories on what the others might (or might not) be. People have talked about them in round about ways. So, while they haven't made many appearances, we've read about the Night's King (his bride) and the Long Night, how dragon glass kills them, and how they've ridden animals into battle (I wonder if they have a dragon, too?).
  5. They'll show up and be the big bad at the end. I kind of like the slow development of them (and Euron) while other things are developing. It's an interesting way to develop the story.
  6. Yeah, I think the only big dragon killed in battle by men (as opposed to other dragons) got a ballista shot in the eyeball in Dorne. The boats in Mareen certainly didn't have those.
  7. Nice interview. Hopefully, he's a great pick.
  8. It'd be pretty strange for a team to wiff on an unprotected pick. He'll sign.
  9. True, but it looks like next year is going to be a pretty loaded class - more like 2011 or 2012 than this year. Hopefully, the Twins get lucky in the supp draft lottery and/or trade for a few extra picks for next year. The draft is supposed to be pretty deep with good college pitchers as well.
  10. Start at 1:45 for the answer to that question.
  11. Sounds like the Twins and Kiriloff are in agreement - http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2016/06/twins-to-sign-first-rounder-alex-kirilloff.html He'll sign for slot. Looks like they'll still need to save a few bucks with their college picks but I expect they'll be able to get the Canadian pitcher too.
  12. Yeah, seemed like another stupid death to piss off the viewers. I was surprised on how bored I was with the big northern battle. You knew the Vale was going to show up and it seems like Sansa should have maybe mentioned that to Jon. Oh well. The scenes with Dany were far better. Obviously, the show is fast forwarding a lot of stuff to finish the show but watching dragons burn ships makes me smile. I do wonder if Davos is going to kill Mellisandre next week.
  13. In the article, Duensing has nothing but nice things to say about Ryan and the Twins. I imagine the call was fine. Torii Hunter once mentioned that Ryan was the nicest guy he ever met in baseball and that Ryan would text him out of the blue to wish him a happy birthday when he was with the Angels and Tigers.
  14. I think they should also give May another shot in the rotation after Molitor is gone. But, realistically, next years rotation will be most of the same names. I don't think the Twins will DFA Nolasco and, frankly, he hasn't been horrible this year. A bit unlucky although that's always been a theme of his. Still, he, Hughes and Santana will all be under contract for us next year.
  15. Here's the link. http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/brian-duensing-ponders-opt-outs-and-home/ Hope he saved his money well. Best of luck to him.
  16. Maybe we're just talking past each other? You said the worst case for not extending him is that the Twins just lose him on the market and don't get to sign a couple Milones per year. (Which is strange, since they extended him for half that price yet we're complaining about it). But that is not a correct measurement of the worst case - the Twins would be out an all-star closer and, for the same money for which they could have had that closer, they would get a journey man reliever. Big difference. Which is why the Twins made the deal. How many extensions has Ryan given out under that criteria? Perkins? Hughes? Redmond? Do we count the Radke, Santana, Mauer, Morneau, Hunter extensions prior to their contract extensions?
  17. Why should he? He took the security of the deal knowing that if he didn't, he would make a lot more on the market. And the Twins understood that, too.
  18. Well, the worst case scenario is that the team would be out an all-star closer after he leaves. You don't find one on the market for 6.5m so that's a bit disingenuous. You end up replacing him with a Tony Sipp-type. That's the risk/reward. And a 13m "loss" against the potential gain - esp when insurance covers some, if not all, - makes sense for the Twins. Whether the Twins will pay that money in FA is a different issue. (I know you didn't start this discussion but it is a bit irritating to hear that the Twins shouldn't extend a player and then hear they shouldn't have done a second extension instead and soon this will devolve into discussions on how the Twins should spend more money on free agency).
  19. I think they'll trade Abad. Frankly, it's been a tough year for their relievers. May has sucked but will be there next year. Chargois should be penciled in but Burdi has been hurt. Meyer's having another lost season but he'll probably be moved to teh pen. I'd like to see Mason Melotakis at some point but there is no need to rush him. I do like Pressley. I also think Duffey would be pretty good in the pen if they give up on him starting.
  20. Sure, they lost 90 in 2014 but were in the playoff hunt in 2015 as well. I'm not sure how well closers last. Certainly some bullpen arms - Nathan, Everyday Eddie, Hawkins - pitched ok at 34 or older. I just don't see how you can complain about getting an all-star closer locked in at a price that a journeyman reliever gets, even if its a few years out.
  21. Sure, he got something good out of the extension. That's how they work. And the Twins got an all star closer locked in at 6.5m for 2017 and 2018 (or a buyout). I'm not sure the risk/reward was big enough for the Twins to say no to that. Guys like Tony Sipp are getting better deals on the market. (Esp when you consider they probably have part of the contract insured).
  22. Or still less than the A's are paying Billy Butler? I just don't quite get the gripe. He played at an all-star level, he was willing to take a very good home town deal, was an all-star twice after that deal, and got hurt. It happens. But if your the Twins, don't you do that deal every time? I mean, if the Twins could have gotten the Ken GIles haul for him, sure but I don't think that was in the cards.
  23. I'm not sure there were any at 15. Certainly no catcher or second baseman. The next SS and 3B off the board were Gavin Lux and Will Craig. Neither seem like better players than Kirilloff. A few of the HS arms might have higher ceilings on draft day but might not, as well. And they have much bigger bust potential. I think generally the Twins did ok in this draft. A bunch of their early picks are very young with high upside. A couple are still 17. It was a solid pick.
  24. Yeah, that's fair. I am of two minds - one, he probably had nice value so a trade would be nice and two, the team thought he'd be good enough to be closing for their next winning team, was willing to sign a team friendly deal and showed the locker room the team wanted to keep its good players. But really, only he and Span were above average players that Ryan could have traded. Wonder what he would have brought back.
  25. I'm not sure this is the contract to bitch about. The Twins will be paying him all of 6.5m next year. Obviously, there are risks to contract extensions and FA signings (which is why I'm generally against big FA deals). But Perkins deal was pretty sound. A team certainly could never make a commitment to players and make them all play year to year until they hit free agency but that seems unsound.
