  1. Good luck to him next year.
  2. It's to get fans to recognize some lesser prospects. If we started at #1, no one would pay attention to #39.
  3. Every politician lies. Clinton has switched positions on tons of issues - if you support her, she evolved, if you don't, she's a poll driven candidate. I think most people think politicians just say what the politician thinks will get him/her elected. Hell, I won't vote for him in a million years but I figured most of Trumps grand statements were just BS for his base. I don't think he really means much of anything. Does anyone really believe Clinton when she says she will go after Wall St? I sure don't. And as racist as Trump has been, Clinton's comments on race - a long history of coded race baiting - and immigrants have been ugly as well. Before the GOP fell over itself on the Syrian refugees, Clinton's comments on the Latin American refugees were just as bad. Now she says something different because that's what we want to hear. Not because she's changed.
  4. I won't argue the reliever thing but I'd nuance it a bit and say it's more focus on fireballers but whatever. I disagree on the international FA stuff - they've done fine, it just takes a long time. The 09 class just made the majors this year. As for Benintendi, the Twins were never really rumored to be on him. The knock on him was that he was pretty much fully developed at draft time - not a lot of projection left. He's small. And the worry was that he'd be a tweener - not good enough for CF, not enough bat for the corners. I think those were fair concerns.
  5. Who said it's drying up? I mean, the team has graduated on average 2-3 top 100 prospects per year for the last 4 seasons. (Plus a number of non top 100 guys). That'll affect most systems. But the team still has darn nice depth, a few sleepers and some potential elite guys (I think Gordon qualifies, others don't). The other side of that coin is why have Hicks and Arcia bombed out, why isn't Gibson better, and how long do we have to wait before we can call Buxton and Berrios busts?
  6. I was really hoping Harrison would have a break out season this year. Dang.
  7. I think it depends on what you're trying to do. Are you trying to time the market and sell Amazon while it's high? Or are you buying stocks for the long run - 10+ years? If it's the second, the only thing you should really worry about it is a bottoming out of your company. (Citibank in 2008, for instance).
  8. MLBtraderumors had an him getting a 5/75m contract before the injury. If that's roughly accurate, and the Nats offer him a QO, he should probably take it, heal, and restore his value and be a FA at 30.
  9. The Twins have lots of options, really. They could trade players other than Dozier. Even though he slumped a bit, Kepler probably has good trade value. Santana might be sought after. They could bundle prospects. Most lists still have them with 4 or so top 100 prospects, plus solid depth. The FA market isn't great but a guy like Ivan Nova won't break the bank, he's a groundball pitcher with decent peripherals and relatively young. I suspect Falvey will try to rectify the defense as a means of helping the pitching staff. I suspect that means some sort of upgrade at catcher and short stop. Maybe elsewhere.
  10. Yeah, I think that's kind of how I see it. I think it was Jayson Parks who used to call elite prospects 'first level players' - that's guys like Buxton and Sano. I think Gordon at short and Kiriloff (far away) can be first division players. After that though, you have some solid depth. A guy like Blankenhorn isn't going to be a first division type but he could be a solid regular ML player. A Cuddyer-type. That's not bad. And - as you say - the Twins seem to have a lot of guys that can fit into that level. They really did have a bunch of solid years from a lot of players that weren't considered top 10 team prospects. So it's still a solid system, even with the graduations. Probably in the 10-13 range among teams.
  11. At the end of the day, Molitor knows a lot about baseball and he is a bad manager. How he has handled Berrios, Buxton, Meyer, Rosario and even Sano and (to a lesser extent) May should be reason enough to fire him.
  12. It would be nice if the Twins got a supp pick after the first round this year. I don't think we'll know until January though.
  13. Not sure - probably depends on how the young hitters evolve. Sano should certainly win a few HR titles in his time.
  14. Ivan Nova has really turned things around in Pittsburgh. And he's one of the youngest guys on the list. But I think trades are still the best possible route.
  15. Did he? I was under the impression he signed for less than Buxton, Zunion and Gausman and whatever Appel was demanding. I could easily be wrong.
  16. Funny, we don't see you and DaveW in the same places anymore ...
  17. https://twitter.com/keithlaw/status/780462392358608896
  18. Saw this article on cracked and thought a few of us would enjoy it. http://www.cracked.com/blog/a-brief-look-at-batsh21t-insanity-1980s-sports-posters/ I had none of these but I do remember the Eric Dickerson one and the Chicago Vice one. 14 year old me would have loved the Keith Millard one.
  19. Generally, a guy like Schonfield will have an article at the beginning of the season that says WAR has faults. And then, for the rest of the season, he relies a lot on WAR. Now, we all do that, but it is irksome.
  20. That's not really true. It's just a vote she didn't earn.
  21. There are certainly people and departments that should stay. Keith Law mentioned that the next GM needed to provide an analytics to the baseball operations but he did praise the minor league development ops. I suspect the new PBO and GM will make a few changes this year and a few more next year. But I think the biggest changes will be bringing new people in instead of firing people.
  22. I remember way back when in the 90s when ESPN was barely a thing and we could have message boards and rants and such. Tom Kelly was complaining about Todd Walker's defense at second base and someone in the press - it might actually have been Neyer - ripped Kelly for worrying about defense when a guy was hitting as good as Walker. And now, years later, we see that he was nearly a -2 WAR defender.
  23. But they aren't hiring him to do that anymore. They would be hiring him to run the show and the only show he has seen run has been the big market kind. That's the point I'm trying to make.
  24. That's not really what they did, though. They drafted Bryant, of course, and he's a stud. But they have 9 hitters worth 1 WAR or more and only Bryant and Baez (#9 in 2011) were drafted. They made some extremely great trades for Rizzo and Russell and nabbed Fowler, Ross, Zobrist and Heyward in FA (and Contreras in international FA). The Cubs made their roster by signing big free agents and making some fantastic trades. In fact, only six guys (out of 45 players) who have played at all this year were drafted by the Cubs.
  25. I think the concern is that his only experience with front office management has been in high payroll situations. Even if we pretend that budgets for draft and player development since 2012 have been the same for the Twins and Cubs, he has not been around a small payroll atmosphere. I suspect that is a concern. And maybe McLeod doesn't want to take the job if he knows the Twins financial restraints. He's going to get a GM job eventually. He's probably one of the few guys who can wait and take over the Yankees or such.
