    Kepler's really turning into an all around solid player. He does a bit of everything. He's a lot better than I thought he'd be, especially in the OF.

    Yeah, I don't think the idea that the Twins are slow on their pitchers is valid. Berrios got to the majors at 22. Both Stewart and Gonsalves were among the youngest arms at AA last year. Jay got to AA in a year. Romero was pushed to AA after TJ surgery etc. Really, except for injuries, the only thing slowing our minor league pitchers has been their performance. Brad Steil has done a good job pushing prospects up the ladder.

    If we think he's going to turn into a pumpkin, why would a team give up anything of value for him? Our offense is pretty well here. We're not waiting on some minor league guys. Pitching is a problem. I don't see how getting rid of a solid, cost-controlled, relatively cheap starter for 2017, 2018, 2019 helps us. Sure, if we get an insane deal, make the trade. The Twins should certainly listen. But a team that needs Santana probably doesn't have the pitching to send back to us, unless it's pitching that won't arrive until 2019. It's like not trading Dozier - if you don't get a deal you like, don't make the trade just to make a trade.

    McCain was really odd. It was sad to watch and just as bad as the CC would suggest. He seemed to confuse the Clinton investigation with the Russian one and wouldn't accept Comey's help.

    Loretta Lynch is not having a good day. Comey's called Trump a liar several times, seems truthful, and even the republican senators are taking this seriously. Not a good day for Trump.

    I don't think trading Santana fixes those problems in the first place. I'm sure the Twins will listen and if the right deal comes by, great. But it probably won't.

    If the Twins were offered Rodgers and Tapia from Col, than go for it. But it's not quite the same comparison. The Cubs were able to spend a bunch on FA pitchers like Lackey, Lester and Hammel. The Twins won't be able to buy themselves out of their pitching concerns. So if we lose Santana and don't get pitching back, we're in a real hole.

    I'll watch the draft on Monday night in my basement while my wife wonders again why she married me and then I'll stream it live on mlb.com during the next two days. And I'll be posting all over the place and insulting Dave, because that's what I do.

    I don't see how trading Santana will help us. We need pitching for this year, 2018 and 2019. Santana gives us that. If we trade him, we need even more pitching for those years. So, arguably, we'd want pitching back. But if a team has young pitching to spare, then they wouldn't need Santana. I don't think trading Santana is going to get us top pitching back. Trading one of Dozier/Polanco/Gordon might.

    No, but they'd be saying that Stewart is the safer pick. Kind of like how, in this draft, people are saying Gore is a safer pick than Greene despite Greene being ranked above him.

    I posted this in another thread but it far from unanimous that Greene is the best guy. Fangraphs has Wright #1 on their draft board and Jim Callis said he'd take Gore over Greene. Greene has velocity but Gore is way ahead of him on secondary pitchers - Hall and a few others might be, too, including Carlson. Greene's risk is a lot higher than Kohl Stewart at draft time. Stewart was supposed to have quality secondary pitches already and was seen as a relatively safe HS pick. Wright is probably the best player in this draft class and that's the guy the Twins should nab.

    Greene over Wright is not a unanimous opinion. Fangraphs has Wright #1 on their draft board.

    You understand that Stewart and Jay were both risk picks, right? Hell, Buxton over Appel was a little risky at the time. Those picks were exactly what you are clamoring for the Twins to do.

    I think we're all just arguing semantics. In my view, yours may differ, a "quality" signing period is where the Twins put a lot of money into one high end player - Minier, Javier, Diaz, Sano. A quantity period is where they spread their pool around to get a number of players for less than a million. See 2016, 2014.

    I think mine is Wright, Gore, Greene, McKay, Adell but, yeah, they'll almost certainly take Wright.

    I was a little surprised to read this from Klaw: "It’s not a huge high school pitching crop, but since there aren’t many up-the-middle prospects in the collegiate or high school ranks, the few good prep arms available should fly off the board before we get far into Round 2. And there just aren’t as many good college starting pitchers, even if we’re generous about whom we call a starter (that is, plenty of these guys look like future relievers), which removes an avenue of safety for a lot of teams who like to default to that group, often as a means of portfolio balancing: "Hey, we took a risky high school kid with our first pick, let’s balance him out with a nice safe college starter."" I thought this draft seemed deeper than last years but maybe that's because we have 3 picks early. I'm really excited about drafting Wrigth but 35/37 is nearly as fun (for me, anyway).

    I'm not sure there's enough evidence either way. Again, look at some of those lists. There are some good players in there but there are also some busts. Also, sorta depends on how you define "lotto guys." I think a guy who isn't getting top 20 money in his class is a lotto guy. The Twins have spent big, as well. Amaurys Minier got the 7th highest bonus in 2012, Diaz got top 10 money in 2013. Javier got the 3rd highest in 2015. Giving 20 guys 250k-500k might get us something from 2016. Thorpe, Jorge, Wells, Romero all fell in that price range.

    I don't think that's quite true, at least as what we are calling sizeable bonuses. Kepler and Polanco were signed under old rules and both were barely in the top 20 of their years signing class. The 2011 signing class - also under the old rules - got us both Jorge and Romero. None of them were among the top 30 payouts - not even close. The 2012 group included 500k for Thorpe, which didn't crack the top 30 that year, either. Wells, signed in 2014, wasn't among the top 40 bonuses in his class. So the Twins have had a number or guys who weren't highly thought of sign. That seems to be what they are doing last year with no one getting more than 450k or so.

    I assume Sean Johnson is "in charge" but I think Lavine, who was in TX draft rooms for 10 drafts (I believe) is going to have a lot of say as well.

    I'm definitely more on Wright or Gore but I also don't have access to what Lavine has. It's possible our scouts think he's gonna be a great LH bat or pitcher once he concentrates on one. I think he's a bit risky though. I want a pitcher and Wright checks all the boxes for me. But if McKay comes cheap enough where the Twins could add someone like Baz at 35 ... maybe I'm ok with that.
