  1. I think I agree - the 2016 draft class has really stepped up, which is remarkable considering that Kiriloff has missed the entire year. But we've seen some nice promotions of our pitching staff and the 2017 group injected a solid amount of talent as well. And if we remember back in April, it didn't look nearly as rosy. Gonsalves was on the DL, Jay was on the DL after moving to the pen, Romero struggled a bit in AA, Stewart couldn't strkie anyone out, Rortvedt was hitting in the .100s in April, Blankenhorn cooled after a hot few weeks. Only Gordon really looked good. Happily, a lot changed.
  2. I think this is a step beyond though. Sign stealing is supposed to be done either by the player or, in some cases, a base coach looking into a dugout. For the players, it was a learned skill that they could use to help their team. Opposing teams would be aware of it and respond accordingly. Some teams were pretty good at it (the Twins, actually, were commonly accused of stealing signs and Torii Hunter has basically copped to it). But using technology to steal signs - at least to me - feels worse. It's not a skill that players or coaches have had to learn. Further, the opposing team would have a harder time knowing that it is happening (I'm sure this is not the first time the Red Sox pulled this) and have a harder time responding.
  3. Yeah, since I hate the Red Sox, I hope they get a big penalty but it's hard to feel bad for NY.
  4. Nice write up. It will be interesting to see how the rankings look at Littell next season.
  5. Well, I would hope that someone who was so interested in facts would know that Falvey isn't our GM. .
  6. These were all pretty good - https://www.buzzfeed.com/crystalro/here-are-all-the-funniest-tweets-from-this-weeks-game-of?utm_term=.ryDow5l9j#.qb4bWyL2z
  7. He just makes too many outs.
  8. http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/byron-buxton-is-playing-excellent-baseball/
  9. Sure hope Curtiss can be a big part of the pen up here. His fastball is supposed to be something but he struggles with control, at least coming into the season. Maybe he ends being who we thought Burdi would be.
  10. Yep, I think he'll make the biggest jump on prospect rankings of all our guys but Miranda isn't far behind, either.
  11. So Trump went full-on crazy in AZ last night. Attacked both GOP senators, promised to pardon Arpaio (who is one of the more disgusting people in the country), blamed the media for everything and seemed to claim he was the victim in Charlottesville. It was so bad that James Clapper - who served both Dems and Republicans - said he's unfit for office.
  12. Klaw has always been a big Buxton guy.
  13. Bummer for him. I remember after he pounded 15 HRs in A ball that he might be an exciting prospect. Just never came together for him. Best of luck on his future.
  14. (Linton is actually Mnuchin's third wife).
  15. Inflation isn't going to move the needle that much. The Twins don't have one of those big TV deals that seemingly every other team got. They've always been a modest franchise and they hired Falvey who has experience in building small market teams through the draft and trades and not spending big in FA. I doubt that was an accident. And here is what Levine said in a recent interview - "We all know where the Minnesota's payroll ranks among the 30 clubs. We're not going to be in the top 10, and we're fine with that. There's no excuses about the payroll. .... And if we're acknowledging that we're going to be a little bit behind on the payroll, we tried to present to ownership—we shouldn't be behind on the infrastructure because if you're not spending on the field and also not spending off the field, outside of sheer dumb luck, I'm not sure how you're vanquishing foes, and our goal is to vanquish the foes." That doesn't sound like a GM who thinks payroll is going to increase much. Maybe the Twins can get close to 120m payroll but I would bet it's closer to 110m.
  16. No, he was on the 25 man roster so all his time counts.
  17. Thanks for posting. Certainly the OF defense has been fun to watch. I'm curious on how Polanco scores at short and Sano at third. I don't think either of them are GG guys but both have been much better than I expected. Additionally, how does SDI like Rosario?
  18. Thanks. I forgot to mention that if Hughes doesn't pitch next year, insurance will pick up some of his salary - I think up to half, but I'm not sure - so there would some salary relief in that instance.
  19. His wife seems .... indifferent? But she's quite pretty and only 36. I wonder why she married the 54 year old rich dude. http://www.cnn.com/2017/08/22/politics/louise-linton-steve-mnuchin-instagram/index.html
  20. Agree with this. Buxton is really turning into a player. Somehow, despite his early struggles, he might put up a 5 WAR season for us. I know WAR has a lot of flaws - esp when measuring defense and baserunning - but, dang, that's amazing from where he was in April.
  21. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/17Ks25huKVP_ducCpWbLmo7h-N09oIGBGoa940Uergz8/pubhtml Thought it might be good to put this as its own thread considering some of the other threads. Twins next year are already at 71m for five guys under contract + Perkins payout and money to Park and Nolasco. They have a few guys arb eligible - Giminez (A4 year), Esobar and Recker (A3 year), Gibson, Pressly, Adrianza (A2 year), May, Grossman (A1 year). Giminez and Recker are pretty easy DFAs. Gibson is probably, as well. Esobar would probably make 4m or so, Pressly and Adrianza might combine for 4m. May and Grossman maybe 2m combined? So that's roughly 10m for those five guys. So, 10 guys getting roughly 81m. If you pay the other 15 guys on the 25 man roster about 560k, that's about 8.5m. So payroll is, already, 89.5m. Assuming they have a 110m or so payroll, which would be the second highest ever for the Twins, that gives them only around 20m or so to add on. Even Tony Sipp-like relief pitchers get 6m/yr. A middling starter gets 12m/yr or more (Santana, Nolasco, Garza, Jackson etc). A big bat like JD Martinez would probably get at least 20m/yr. So the Twins might be able to stretch their payroll and add another starting pitcher for the back of the rotation and hope he catches fire like Santana did and really pray that he doesn't turn into another Nolasco or Hughes. And take a gamble on a set-up man. Or, more likely, they'll sign a number of vets to 1-3m deals, hope a few catch fire.
  22. In 2016, he threw ~ 200 ip, 99 ERA+, 2.0 WAR that's about as average as you can get. This year has been a disaster. 2015 he only had 12 starts coming back from injury so I'm not sure there's a lot to gain from it. If the Twins think they can get the 2016 or better version, he's an upgrade. If not, he's not.
  23. I think I'd rather the Twins tried to get Matt Moore. He has two option years left. He's been horrible for SF this year and they want prospects. He's only 28 and has some history of being good but hasn't quite recovered from TJ years ago. He gets strike outs but gives up lots of hits. He's a fly ball pitcher so I'm not sure how TF compares to SF's park but I suspect our OF defense would be an upgrade for him.
  24. I would imagine the Tigers would want Gordon and Gonsalves as a starting point but more would be needed. Not sure how money plays into all this but Detroit isn't just going to get rid of him and they are also trying to shed payroll. So the Twins (or Astros) would have to give up real talent and take on a lot of salary. Does that sound like a Pohlad move?
  25. Conditioning with Sano is always going to be an issue but I thought he looked pretty good this year.
