  1. Ignoring the baseball stuff, hope and prayers for Jodi. I'm sure that's a pretty big added pressure for the family.
  2. I'm starting to think this team is winning despite the manager and FO. The FO waived the white flag at the deadline and has not been able to stop Molly from all these stupid bunts. Sure, they'll let him leave after the season but 51 sac bunts? That's terrible. On the plus side, the players are fun to watch generally.
  3. Yeah, I think Mauer's probably going to get in - his three batting titles will sway older voters while younger voters will like his JAWS score. I do think it's fair to argue whether he's deserving but Torre, Simmons and even Posada will probably be sitting out. I think he's better than all of them but they each have a case.
  4. OK, but if this is the problem - Dougie over pitching some guys - then isn't the real story (and huge concern) that the FO continued to let it happen? Shouldn't they have said, "Don't do that ever again." And, when he did, fire him on the spot? So I don't really think that was the problem.
  5. Dude, people posted that he wasn't smart enough to play ML baseball. There were lots of posts about him lacking mental toughness. And there were posts about replacing him with Kepler in CF. And that's just in one thread! Funnily, now that Buxton is hitting better than Kepler, no one is questioning Kepler's IQ. Wonder what the difference is.
  6. You know it was a four game series, right?
  7. I think those are all valid questions. Generally, I think the answer (for me, anyway) is that the Twins new FO should have known that they couldn't/shouldn't treat Dougie Baseball like just any old minor league manager. He was beloved by a certain segment of the fan base who adored the early 2000 Twins. He was also very close with prominent local reporters and the lead writer of Twinkie Town loves him. They should know how important he is in the area. Full stop. Sure, that means treating him differently than a guy who was just your typical career minor league manager but he wasn't a typical minor league manager. They should have been prepared and they weren't.
  8. Dave's trying to give too much credit to the new FO there.
  9. They are supposed to rate the same things (how much value player X has) so, ideally, you would want them to be similar.
  10. Oh yeah, he's a head strong player and after Shaungessy wrote his hit piece, ownership insulted him (rent-a-player) and then he dug his heels in. He certainly could have handled it better on his end but the whole thing was created by the reporter. http://www.espn.com/boston/mlb/news/story?id=6396726
  11. I was living out east at the time and spending too much time on ESPN forums so I got the full detail. You can't imagine how much fans hated Shaughnessy. It's like nothing I've ever seen.
  12. Pretty sure the Blue Jays would do Donaldson for Sano straight up but the Twins would be idiots to do that.
  13. That was a made up story. He caught the last out and offered the ball to Francona who told him to keep it. Months later, Shaughnessy of the Globe calls him up, gets some funny quotes about the ball (Shaughnessy: "that ball will pay for your kids future" Dougie: "Dang right, that's their college right there." After getting those quotes and not using context, he goes to ownership and publishes a story before the Red Sox can even do anything. It was a pretty good example of why everyone thinks Shaughnessy is a ****.
  14. I think Souhan might have been correct about the weight concerns the team has. I think next year he plays 3B/1B/DH with maybe 60% of the time being DH and fairly evenly splitting the two corners. Long term, he's a first baseman or DH only.
  15. I'm totally going to count my chickens before they hatch but we'll sweep the Yankees and get home field for the wild card.
  16. Klaw has said advanced stats like fip are worthless for minor leaguers. I think you're probably more correct on what a minor league manager should coach - get yourself in physical position to cover a play; don't stay out drinking until 2am; here's how you run the bases; stay on your toes, etc. Some of the things we'd expect to see in the majors - not letting lefty pitchers pitch to lefties, platoons - probably don't apply in the minors when you're trying to get experience for young players. Where I think there might be legit breakdown between coaching and 'analytics' would be if (as presented by some in this thread) the team had a pitch count limit that the manager was ignoring or other (unstated) team roles/rules. If the Twins wanted Player A to get some high leverage innings out of the bullpen but the manager wanted to win the game more than give that player those innings, that would be a problem. But analytics themselves might not be a big part of minor league games if the main purpose is to get experience. I would be stunned if the FO was saying something like "don't let Kepler see LH pitchers" even though he might have struggled against them. I assume this was more a personality conflict or Levine simply has someone else in mind he trusts more to take over some of the coaching positions.
  17. Generally, I don't care if Dougie was upset and venting. He was just fired. I've been fired before and I sure as hell wouldn't be a beacon of grace in his shoes. Doesn't mean he's a bad guy or a bad manager. Maybe he is, maybe he isn't but none of us know. I hope he gets another job because I liked the guy and, IIRC, his wife or son was dealing with some medical issues and I don't want him unemployed. At the end of the day, it's on Favley/Levine to run this ship and they get to do it how they see fit. They had a nice advantage of coming into a pretty solid system with good young players in place so they got a cushion. Whether or not they can create a minor league system that can restock the majors like Ryan did in the 2000s won't be answered for years. They had a nice first draft and it sounds like Steil is going to stick around, both good signs. The only think I do think lacked grace was not having the call come from one of them. Dougie's been with the Twins a long time and was a key part of the team that fought against contraction. He means a lot to fans who have had to eat the Pohlad bull**** for years. They should have known that and treated him a bit better on the way out. But I don't think this means they are bad guys either, just maybe a little tone deaf.
  18. Yeah, Morris was a big deal when he signed and when he left us he was the highest paid pitcher in the league. http://www.nytimes.com/1991/12/19/sports/baseball-blue-jays-make-morris-baseball-s-richest-pitcher.html?mcubz=3
  19. http://m.startribune.com/doug-mientkiewicz-is-fired-as-minor-league-manager-for-twins/444772903/?section=sports Bummer. He sounds pretty pissed about it. Best of luck to him in the future.
  20. Well, unsurprisingly, no real harm to either Reed Sox or Yankees. Small fines but a warning to all other teams that this **** can't happen. http://nypost.com/2017/09/15/red-sox-fined-for-high-tech-scam-as-yankees-hit-with-own-surprise/
  21. Sure, but that's also the reality of pitching in the majors right now. Look at the Angels, Baltimore, Seattle. Gibson would be an upgrade for all of them. There just aren't that many good pitchers in baseball right now. So, yeah, if Gibson manages another 30 start, 160ip, 90 ERA+ season, with the typical ups and downs those seasons provide, he's still probably worth the 4m.
  22. I think Mejia still has options for next year. He was put on the 40 man for the 2016 season. He had an option used that year. I'm not sure if the Twins have used an option on him this year or if he's on injury rehab assignment. But, either way, he should have at least one more year of options, if needed. If they do bring back Gibson, then he, Santana and Berrios would be locks for the rotation. After that I think it would be pretty open.
  23. I ****ing hope so. I hope there are nationwide protests. **** this.
  24. And it continues. Another cop not guilty for killing a black man. http://www.cnn.com/2017/09/15/us/jason-stockley-officer-shooting-verdict/index.html
  25. No, but I imagine the people in stats do have theories about pitcher height (lack of downhill plane) and small ball players. They also probably have something that allows them to guess if a guy is too big to play the OF or catcher or such. I can't believe stat guys would ignore a players build. And I don't think there are any stat guys who solely look at only stats.
