  1. Because he's not just a simple class A manager. The FO should have known what he meant to this fan base. It was tone deaf and suggests that the new FO doesn't understand the Twins history or fans. I don't know how old you are but it's really important to remember how much good will the Pohlads destroyed in the 90s. They went from WS to pretty good in 92 to playing "we can't compete in this market" and trading all their players, letting their young genius GM leave and ****ing fans over completely. It was a lost decade. And then the same ****ty owner wanted to contract the team and take a payout from MLB! And a young group of ball players restored that goodwill. That's why fans of a certain age adore Dougie and AJ and Hunter even though they never won a WS. That's why Myjah at TT still talks about Jacque Jones. The FO should have known how important he was to the team.
  2. That was a fun game. Offense seemed a little uptight the first few innings but then it all came together. The Angels are in a nice little tail spin and the Rangers have actually caught them. I liked what we saw of Mejia tonight. He's not a perfect pitcher and health is a big issue for him but he's done enough so far this year that it looks like (IF healthy) he can be a real big league pitcher. Certainly not a front of the rotation pitcher but a big step up from some of what we've had to do over the last few years.
  3. Well, gallup is the one to watch and he's been in the high 30s for quite some time with disapproval in the mid 50s or higher. http://news.gallup.com/poll/201617/gallup-daily-trump-job-approval.aspx Occasionally he'll get a jump up when he acts tough on N. Korea (we're totally going to go to war) but then people remember he's a dick and his numbers go down.
  4. Yeah, Santana in the wild card. Dance with the one who brung you, as they say.
  5. There's really no reason we shouldn't take 3/4 from Detroit. We're far better and they've quit on the season. But they've also taken 7 out of the first 12 this year from us and rivals tend to enjoy screwing up the others post season plans. (Although the same point goes for Houston/LAA).
  6. Man, really nice of the Angels to lose. With 7 left against Detroit we should be ok. But Detroit so far has taken 7 out of the fist 12 games this year. Hopefully, we don't collapse.
  7. http://www.startribune.com/twins-fire-international-scouting-coordinator-howard-norsetter/446164983/ No reason given in the article but presumably this has to do with the new FO making systematic changes. Norsetter helped find talents like Morneau, Thorpe and Kepler but also missed on Nishi and Park. Good luck to him in the future.
  8. I think he's done. Maybe he can do something one inning at a time out of the pen but give his last two starts to Slegers or Gee or someone else.
  9. Yeah, they're a playoff team but they are probably the fifth best team in a five team field so ... But let's also remember where we all thought we were in April. That the Twins are likely a one and done in the postseason is a great season. And I think the playoff experience for the young guys will be useful next year.
  10. It's a good article but I'm not sure how much it affects player acquisition. Twins, for instance, tend to favor HS athletes. That seems like a good long term bet. Guys like Baddoo and Lewis and Miranda and Kiriloff are going to develop into hitters. Trying to focus on one type of hitter (Harrison was the other big HS power bat of the Harper draft) might not be a good idea. Go all around talent.
  11. Sounds about right. 2 of Gordon/Gonsalves/Romero and a low A ball throw in like Blankenhorn? That's 3 top 10ish prospects in our system for one guy. That might be an overpay, actually. Dunno. Maybe Baltimore could get a huge overpay from the Yankees or Dodgers who can afford it. I'd love to see his bat in our lineup and let Sano move to DH. Anyhow, we're dreaming, it won't happen.
  12. What would you give up for one year of Machado?
  13. Ah, gotcha. Then, no. I don't think the umps are purposefully helping the Yanks although I do think the tremendous pressure in places like Fenway and Yankee stadium helps the home teams b/c umps tend to help home teams. But that just means TF fans have to get rowdier.
  14. I actually do believe the allegations made by Selena Roberts when she uncovered ARod's PED use that people within the game were notifying certain star players (Yankees and Red Sox) of when they were going to be tested. The Mitchell Report cited to that as well, years earlier.
  15. Agreed, those last three aren't big names. I know Eades but had to google the other two. Maybe Vasquez could be a power arm in the pen? I dunno, he seems pretty old for A-ball but gets a lot of strike outs.
  16. I know some players are roiding up but it doesn't feel like the roid era, in part, I would guess, is that I think the roid use is more uniform through out the league now. And it seems that (again, a guess on my part) the PED use is mostly aimed at keeping players healthy/on the field as opposed to turning them into Hulk Hogans. I think the change in philosophy of hitters - walk, k, HR - has changed things dramatically. Hitters are swinging for the fences all the time now. Kepler, for instance, has a HR swing against lefties even though he can't hit them at all. (I wonder if he should change his approach). Teams are focusing on improving launch angles and back spin to get the ball to travel further. New parks added in the last few years are even smaller. And pitchers are throwing harder so that might help add a little distance. And it's been a long hot summer so the ball is maybe carrying a bit more as well.
  17. I don't think Kepler's HR would have made it out of TF or many other parks for that matter. Anyone know for sure?
  18. In any given year, I'd probably take the field over Trout but not a specific player over him. So, clearly, no. But in Arod's peak you still had guys like Boone, Giambi and Suzuki who could claim to have been better in seasons. I see no reason to think that Buxton's peak is 100 OPS+ as a hitter. I think he can move into the group of 10 or so players who have a realistic shot, year in, year out, of being better than Trout.
  19. They're closer than Mike thinks. In mid April, by bWAR, Buxton was a slight negative (I think he 'peaked' at -0.4). Since then, he's risen all the way to 5.2 but considering he was a negative, he's been essentially (or at least close enough) to a 6 WAR player since that time. Trout on the season is at 6 WAR. Now, obviously, Trout missed nearly a month or his totals would be much higher and it's not really fair to ignore Buxton's horrid beginning or to assume that WAR calculations based on defense and baserunning are solid. (And fWAR is a completely different story). But, let's do that anyway. Assuming some continued improvement - he's hitting .278/.340/.465 since April 21st and .325/.372/.589 since July 1st, it's not crazy to think he could, over a full season, have a puncher's chance of leading the league in WAR in any given season even if he's not as good as Trout.
  20. I doubt it. I'm sure Dougie's pros and cons are well known among the baseball industry. And frankly, this isn't much of a dust up.
  21. Besides the covers, the all-star games, the video games, the constant praise from national media? The MVP vote totals? ESPN commercials? I'm not sure what else you want. I think it's impossible to say Mauer wasn't covered well in the period. He was pretty universally seen as the top catcher and arguably the best player in baseball. Statheads loved him. Would he have gotten more coverage if he was playing in Boston? Sure. But that doesn't mean he wasn't covered. He was huge.
  22. Didn't we? I thought we did.
  23. I lived in NY area until 2009. Mauer was everywhere. He was on the cover of MLB the Show two years in a row. SI, ESPN, Posnanski, Fangraphs etc covered him constantly. He was in the conversation with Pujols as best player in the game for a while. He might not have been in as many commercials as others and Yankees/Red Sox dominated ESPN but Mauer was certainly one of the most covered players of that time.
  24. um, no. He had a bad 1999 season for us but was in the minors all of 2000. From 2001-2004 he was the Twins fulltime player. All of those teams had winning records and he was a big part of those teams. He and AJ essentially were tied for WAR lead on the 03 team. https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/mientdo01.shtml
