  1. Eh. He's pretty much just another stat guy but a little bit fuller of himself. He won't tell you anything that Gleeman or Cameron wouldn't. Not sure JAWS is quite the hit that Jimmer does but whatever. He's not horrible but he's sorta blah as these guys go. I dunno. Fangraphs seems the right fit for him.
  2. I think Sano and Dozier are locks and then one of Morrison, Rosario or Buxton will get there. So i guess that's a push?
  3. They've done a nice job improving an already strong offense and they get added bonus for adding another LH hitter. Cleveland has five pretty good RH starters and the Twins will be throwing some pretty strong lefty lineups at them. I think the lineup is about as good as we could have hoped. They might make a few minor tweaks like adding a RH 4th OFer but that would be it. Solid A. The rotation needed improvement and Ordoizzi is a nice get, especailly at that price. But he might just be another Gibson-type pitcher. It seems we're relying a lot on Berrios to step up, Santana to remain at least a 200ip, 2+ WAR pitcher and hoping that some of Gibson, Ordoizzi, Mejia, Hughes, Gonsalves, Romero works out. That's not ideal. D. The bullpen looks a lot better now. Look at Seth's projected opening day group. Fernando Rodney, Addison Reed, Trevor Hildenberger, Ryan Pressly, Zach Duke, Taylor Rogers, Tyler Duffey. I'm not convinced that Pressly should be there over Busentiz but still, that looks like a pretty solid group with some decent arms (Curtiss, Busentiz, Jay, Moya) in AAA ready to help out. B-. Lastly, I have to say I'm impressed with ownership actually spending some money. It looks like opening day payroll might be around 120-125m, easily an all-time high. It'll be interesting to see how that compares to other teams but we might not be a bottom third team in payroll anymore. Of course, whether ownership continues to support the team is an open question.
  4. The bullpen sure looks better written out like that.
  5. Frankly, those were similar comments to what the people on mlb.tv were saying. ST is for pitchers, hitters can get back in the flow very quickly.
  6. With the option it might also mean the Twins are getting ready to move on from Mauer after this year. With a good year, top prospect Rooker could be in the plans for 2019 and you still have options for Morrison and Sano under contract. Unless Mauer has a huge season, this could be it.
  7. Our current OF options are Buxton, Kepler, Rosario, Grossman, Granite and Morrison. All but Buxton are lefties. Our current DH/1B options are Mauer, Morrison and Vargas. Vargas is a switch hitter but iffy and the others are lefties. I would guess that our final opening day roster will add another RH bat with Granite starting the year in AAA.
  8. Wow, pretty nice. Huge bat, he hit lefties ok but crushed righties. Hard to argue with this signing. And I think this pushes the Twins payroll to nearly 120m which is a lot more than I'd have guessed the FO could spend so good for them.
  9. The change in drafting philosophy happened in 08 when Deron Johnson took over. He drafted flame throwers instead of control pitchers. Radcliff had more imput on the 12 class.
  10. There was lots of hysteria and false narratives.
  11. "Our starting pitcher put us in a hole today. He got his work in, yes, but we chased the ball all over the field and spent eight hours [out there] in the first three innings. "That ain't good enough. He's got to pick up the pace and get going. He says his arm's fine and everything's good, then let's go. Get on the ball, throw the ball ... that's all I want to see from here on out. "Everybody gets put to sleep and then we play a [poor] ballgame. Anything else?" That's not calling him out for not being tough enough.
  12. Agreed. Obviously, this is a bit semantics but if by "elite" we sorta mean the high levels of Buxton, Sano, Mauer and if by "really good" maybe a tier below where we saw Kepler and maybe Berrios (Berrios might have moved between the two, depending on who did the ranking) who might be able to make that jump this year? Lewis, Javier and maybe Thorpe with a dominating year? I think guys like Kiriloff, Baddoo, Graterol and Enlow would need more than one big season to jump that high up the rankings and guys like Rooker and Romero might peak at the Kepler tier. And that's assuming everything goes right, which it won't.
  13. Gates flipped and agreed to a plea deal. But he's still looking at five years in jail. Obviously, it'll be a bit less with good behavior and he'll be sent to a minimum security fed jail but still. Wow, five + years. That's probably scary for Manafort. https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/former-trump-campaign-official-rick-gates-expected-to-plead-guilty-and-cooperate-with-special-counsel-in-probe-of-russian-election-interference/2018/02/23/ceaaeac8-16b4-11e8-b681-2d4d462a1921_story.html?utm_term=.2b9e422afd78
  14. His upside is limited so is he part of the future or is he early? Sorta like how Marty Cordova was ahead of the rest of the Hunter/Jones etc group? I don't know. But I like the idea of targeting guys with years of control and decent floors since the cost for an ace is probably too much. I'm not sure if Mahle is the guy or someone else is out there but that's sort of the idea. I have no knowledge of the Reds (or most other teams) rebuild so Mahle was more an example as opposed to a specific target.
  15. Leach was a helium guy on draft day but he's still raw and very far away. The concern was that because he was demanding as much an Enlow, he'd be taken if they passed on him. The Twins have taken several HS arms that are risky but have nice upside from non-traditional places like Canada (Leach and Balazovic) or are recovering from injuries (Benninghoff). They won't all work out but they are reasonable risks.
  16. I still think the Twins are better off looking to add a starter through a trade. Not sure who. Cincinnati has a young arm named Tyler Mahle who is the back end of several top 100s and made his ML debut last year. His upside is limited but he could be an innings eating #3. The Reds are in full rebuild and I'm not sure the 24 year old would be part of that rebuild. He'd fit in well with the Mejia/Gonsalves/Romero/Thorpe/Littell group. I'm just surprised that we haven't been able to make a bigger trade than Ordoizzi.
  17. They can have a league average or worse starting rotation and still be an above average team.
  18. Depends on how the teams ahead of us want this to play out. We're picking 20 so we certainly will have some prep arms to choose from. And every year someone falls. Last year, Alex Faedo (early season favorite to go in the top 4) fell to 18. The year before we saw Dakota Hudson, who was supposed to go around #15, drop to 34. Jordan Sheffield fell a few spots further. Alec Hanson fell to the third round (I really wished we hadn't passed on him). Walker Buehler fell from a top 5 guy to 24. College pitchers are watched so much that their flaws sometimes get over amplified and the shiny new prep arms just seem more exciting. It's way early but mlbpipeline gave 17 guys a FV grade of 55 or better. So I wouldn't be surprised if a college arm like Rolison, Weathers, Gilbert, Kowar or Mize ended up being there at 20. The Twins also have an extra pick so they can play with their pool a bit.
  19. I'm not sure if you're referring to my posts where I've basically said that the Twins down years (11-14) were because of a natural cycle of late drafts catching up to them after a decade of generally late picks. If it is, I've never said you had to draft a pitcher. You're just less likely to get elite talent if you're picking 24th every year.
  20. I'm not greedy, I'd take Godley instead.
  21. The only two things I've read were that it's a bit deeper than last year and prep arms are the best thing in this draft.
  22. I like their list. I think Miranda should be higher but I'm also not sure how much higher. Garver at 19, Curtiss at 21 and both will probably make the team out of ST. That's a deep system. Servirino is #30. He's the prospect we got from Atlanta. I keep forgetting we signed him. Good for us.
