    I'm not an advocate of a six man rotation, but wouldn't the theory of "less innings might mean less injuries/more effectiveness" be the same as when teams went from 4 man rotations to five man ones?

    I'm not saying Graham pitched similarly, I'm saying they've been used similarly. Not trusted except when there's no choice or the game is decided. Graham has been protected in the pen, and only used in low leverage situations or when he's the last or second to last option. He wouldn't have been used in Pitt either if Molitor had any choice. The effect of that is to reduce the size of the pen in most games. Maybe they'll start to use Graham more, which would help get down to 7 relievers.

    I think the plan for Graham has always been to stash him at the back of the pen, similar to most rule 5 guys. If he can work his way into higher leverage usage, I think the Twins will allow it. But I don't blame them for not using him that way to date, and personally I wouldn't trust him with a 1run lead now yet, either.

    As to the OP, the only things I'm wondering are why he was signed in the first place (which was the reaction of 90 percent of this board when it happened), and why it took so long to DFA him.

    I think the Twins think they need 13 pitchers because the 8 man bullpen was really 6. Stuffer and Graham were not usable in any game still winnable or losable, so most days it's like they weren't there. That was bad enough, but recently both Perkins and Thompson are LOOGYs at best, so now how big is the bullpen?

    seems like photoshop'd do the trick, at least to sew some temporary uncertainty, and'd be way cheaper to boot.

    Mauer has hit third for the vast majority of his career.

    Didnt mean to hijack, but...I've been watching baseball for 50 odd years. I've never seen a RFer as far off the line as what I saw in Boston. Not even for a dead pull RH hitter. Anything hit close to the RF corner would be an automatic stand up triple. And they're not concerned about that. Plouffe is in a slump. Most hitters go through them. He's miscast as a cleanup hitter, but he will come out of his slump. Mauer is the elephant in the room, not Plouffe.

    The issue is, they LACK a middle of the order. Mauer doesn't belong hitting third, but what are the options? Plouffe should be a six or seven hitter in a good offense, but what are the options? Same for Hunter. I agree with Mike, though...Mauer unable to put up a .700 OPS is the biggest issue. It was shocking to see Boston put their RFer into the right center field gap whenever Mauer came to the plate. Teams have decided they no longer need to defend right field against him.

    Oswaldo Arcia was hitting .276/.338/.379 when he went on the disabled list, and he is widely viewed as a disappointment so far in 2015. As of this morning, Mauer is hitting .275/.333/.374.

    Oh don't be so hard on yourself. It was shamefully written in terms of spacing and punctuation for just about anybody.

    Other good hitters get "pitched around" in scoring situations too, yet they find ways to do damage and drive in runs. I believe his SLG/ISO is part of the explaination, a too passive approach another part.

    it's not 5 years, it's thru 2018 For both Hamels and Mauer. And the difference between paying Nolasco and paying Hamels is 10m in 2016 and 2017. only 2018 would require paying Hamels full salary, a year when presumably there should be plenty of salary room. Buxton won't be expensive by 2018.

    Sano and Nolasco for Hamels? Philly gets the primo prospect they're looking for, and some salary relief. Twins get the primo starter they need, reduce the salary drag by getting out from under Noasco's deal, and have Plouffe to play third and all the other prospects still in their system.
