    If the Twins view Taylor Rogers as a bullpen piece, it makes no sense to me to put him in the Rochester rotation. He's 25, repeating AAA. He's not listed among your top 8 Twins starters. Put him in the pen where he can focus on learning to warm quickly, and get used to pitching on back to back days, and then maybe pitching 3 days in a row.

    The overwhelming majority of LH hitters do not hit as well against LH pitching as they do against RH pitching. This was true 100 years ago, is true today, and will likely be true 100 years from now. Having a tough LH reliever, who in addition to being tough, throws LHed, is a tried and true method of reducing the effectiveness of opposing LH hitters late in a game. I agree that spending money on LH pitchers who cannot get ANYbody out makes little sense. I do not agree lacking a decent to good LOOGY wasn't/isn't a need.

    you specifically said there wasn't a correlation between payroll and postseason, which isn't true. There is a correlation. ..a fairly strong one.

    There were 8 playoff teams until 2012. So in fact, your numbers show that those top 33 percent of payrolls comprise more than 33 percent of the playoff field in every year except one. The top 33 percent have filled 43 percent of the playoff field, the bottom 67 percent just 57 percent. What actually makes it MUCH more likely to miss the playoffs is being one of the bottom 67 percent of payroll.

    In all seriousness...do you feel the bullpen is a weak spot? If so, (since we're in a thread about Bastardo), do you feel that LH relief pitching is a specific 2016 weakness, and would adding a quality LHer lessen those concerns?

    By "that article," I presume you mean the Spanish language one in something called El Nuevo Diario. I also presume that isn't the work of the PR department.

    No, but it seems to me they sometimes go to concerted lengths to dampen fan enthusiasm. "We're closed for the winter. Call us about tickets in April" is A strategy, I'm not convinced its a good one.

    As for the Twins bullpen not costing them in the postseason, these are certainly not the end all, be all numbers but they are at the least interesting (postseason series lost by the Twins under Ryan): 2002, ALCS: Twins bullpen gave up 16 ER, took 2 L's LAA pen, 2 ER, got 1 W 2003 ALDS: Twins pen 4ER, NYY 0. 2004 ALDS: Twins pen 9 ER, 2 L's, NYY 6 ER, 2 W's 2006 ALDS: Twins pen 4 ER 1 L, Oak 2ER, 1W 2009 ALDS: Twins pen 6 ER 1L, NYY 2 ER 2010 ALDS Twins pen 4 ER 1 L, NYY 1 IMO, Some of that is noise. Some of that is, the Twins pen was not up to the task of post season baseball. I think that's because the Twins, under Ryan, have tended to follow the "bullpens aren't important and can be assembled on the cheap" model.

    Nit pic, but everyone's points would be easier to follow if they were to specify "AL," "NL," or "MLB" when citing where a team stands. For example, "22nd in the league" can be inferred to be "22nd in MLB" because the Royals are not in a league with 22 teams. But your point would be clearer if you said MLB. And it would be much, much clearer if, when referring to the Twins, "8th" was specified as in the AL, or in MLB. Not to mention, Those are not interchangeable terms or comparisons, particularly in the case of pitching, where in the NL even relief pitchers sometimes get to face opposing pitchers.

    *Of the first three, I'd call only the Hughes extension foolish. And even that doesn't have to keep Berrios from the rotation, and likely wont for very long. If Berrios earns a shot, and doesn't get it, THAT's the foolishness, not the FA signings. *I'm not asking for long term contracts to stopgap players...I'm asking for the Twins to STOP focusing on stopgaps and instead focus on adding difference makers. Your beef should be with those calling for more Boyers while we wait for the cavalry to ride in from AA.

    Bullpens are 7 or 8 deep, and teams use 10 or more relievers in a season regularly. Naming 5 "pretty good" relievers over a decade does more to disprove your point than prove it, even if we squint hard enough to declare guys like Boyer "pretty good."

    This article is depressing. The umpteenth offseason in a row of trying to fill holes with stuff other teams don't want.

    First, I think the Twins need 3 bullpen arms equal to or better than May. May is one of the three. As I said, if they fill those three necessary reliever spots from elsewhere, I'd be fine with May in the Rotation. Second, the truth is I've seen enough of May in the bullpen to believe he'll be an asset there. Actually the real "Truth" is, neither of us has seen enough of May to be 100 percent certain of his capabilities in either the rotation or the pen.

    If the Twins go out and acquire 3 relievers equal to or better than what I expect from May, great. Put May in the rotation. Since they're not going to do that, I think May to the pen is likely the best of the available choices.

    my guess is it's the belief among some Twins brass that May won't prove much better than Milone in the rotation, but May will likely be a much better bullpen piece than Milone. May's stuff plays up better in the pen. I do agree money isn't the issue, they're paying the same for both no matter the usage.

    IMO, I don't care if TR reached out to someone. That does nothing. Signing someone is all that matters. My wife doesn't give me credit for reaching out to the garage, she gives me credit when I actually clean it.

    There isn't really any way to read the Twins offseason except to conclude they're out of money.

    I can't speak for "this board" but you wouldn't have heard me blasting them for adding Russell Martin for nothing but money, or accepting a salary dump of Montero. In fact, I'd have been congratulating them.

    It was also reasonable to think Suzuki's declining arm strength was only going o become more of an issue over time. On top of reasonable doubts about offense.
