    Why would the Yankees be willing to trade Murphy?

    off topic, but a pet peave of mine: I often read that the bullpen is "the easiest position to fill." Nothing could be farther from the truth. You need about 10 relievers, minimum, to get through a season. There aren't enough good relievers available to put even 5 on each team. I'd be willing to wager every single team in contention over the past 40 years was, to one extent or another, looking for bullpen help at the trade deadline. If it were true that bullpen is the easiest position to fill, we all should be calling for TR's head on a platter, no? He hasn't adequately "filled" the position of bullpen for any team he's ever been a GM on. It's possible no GM in the last 40 years of baseball has "filled" the bullpen well. Finding enough good relievers to "fill" a bullpen might be the single hardest thing a GM is faced with.

    Not to mention, didn't TR himself identify bullpen upgrade(s) as the team's highest offseason priority?

    I have a bad feeling about this trade. Real bad. I hope I'm underestimating Murphy, and overestimating Hicks.

    Unless I'm missing something, Terry Ryan has never--not once--signed a reliever from another organization to more than a 1 yr contract. In going on 2 decades as Twins GM. Maybe we shouldn't be surprised.

    Dunno. But the title of the thread is "Shields for Nolasco would you do it?"

    No matter the specifics, no matter who's decision, it does seem odd that the Twins would allow him to play winter ball, he'd choose to play winter ball, and then all of a sudden, he's not going to play winter ball. There could be benign reasons for this, but let's not kid ourselves...there are no GOOD reasons for this.

    if you could trade Nolasco for Shields it wouldn't be $65 m for Shields.

    I disagree. 200 innings of meh isn't more valuable than 60 strategically placed innings of dominance. I also believe if you're making a point, if you toss out the bad points for one side of the argument, you come to a more accurate conclusion if you also toss out the bad points of the other side as well. Or don't toss out the bad at all. It's not like May's bad starts didnt happen, just because someone thinks they shouldn't have.

    If we get to throw away the clunkers, take away his relief appearance July 19 at Oakland, when he was still "getting his feet wet" as a reliever, and the 3ER he gave up in 1 IP. Lets also toss out the 0IP, 3ER outing at Houston Sep 6. Now compare numbers. How's he look, starter vs reliever?

    Right...the risk with Shields is that age and heavy use has taken an irreparable toll on his arm, and he's in a death spiral. He'll just continue to get worse, rathe than rebound. But the opt out isnt really any sort of risk. If he takes it, you've gotten one really good year and now don't have any risk at all. Someone else is taking on the risk.

    Yep. I, for one, would be ecstatic if Shields came to the Twins and pitched well enough to opt out. One really good year, vs two of Nolasco? Where do I sign?

    "Move to middle relief." Now you're paying FA starter prices to a reliever, and chances are he's not an asset there, either. So you're not just wasting money, you're weakening the pen.

    I also take exception to describing Burton or Fien as "striking gold." More like "striking adequate."

    There's little reason to believe Shields is a sure "problem." In a down year last year, he would have easily been one of the Twins best five starters. Easily. Also, can you name these three relievers? Once you've done that, explain why the Twins couldn't add Shields AND sign these three.

    I'd trade Nolasco for Shields without so much as a second thought, but that's a pipe dream. No way SD gives away Shields for nothing. Shields still has value. Right now,you couldn't give Nolasco away. A more realistic deal would be Nolasco for Melvin Upton.

    Isn't it Ryan's job to be out in front of trends, rather than be surprised and frustrated? Actions speak louder than words. If improving the pen is truly a priority, do something about it. Offering Fien and hoping on minor leaguers seems to me the opposite of "priority."

    Yes...Byung is as close to one syllable as us westerners can manage. Much like the car is actually "Hyundai."

    More Korean language trivia: Hangul is the name of the Korean language. Though the written Korean language originates from Chinese characters, pronunciations and some meanings are different. Further, centuries ago a Korean monarch developed an alphabet system, so written Korean is actually comprised of "letters," much like English. Just to confuse students of the language, though, in South Korea newspapers and the like will toss in a random character here and there, to make the meaning clearer...or so they say! Interestingly, North Koreans avoid using characters, it's all Hangul. To bring this back to Mr Pak, the "P" in "Pak" and the "B" in Byung are actually the same "letter." The "B" gets a slightly different pronunciation because it follows a "consonant"... the "k" in Pak. So technically, if westernized, it should really be Pyung Ho Pak.

    Byung Ho Park. Technically, Pak (rhymes with sock) is actually the Korean family name, Park a common westernization of that name. I have no idea which he prefers. And further, his family name comes first in Korea. Pak Byung Ho. It's common for Koreans to reverse that in the west, but not universal. My qualifications: it was a long time ago, but I'm a graduate of the Korean Dept of the Defense Language Institute.

    The problem with non tendering Milone is, whether or not he is one of the Twins best five starters in December isn't the issue. He may or may not be. But the question is whether or not he'll be one of the Twins best five AVAILABLE starters for good chunks of 2016. The answer to that is almost surely yes. Teams who plan on five starters getting them through a season are always disappointed. Milone is a capable big league pitcher, and will prove useful. I doubt the Twins add a better starter if they drop Milone. Fien is the opposite...the Twins can and should be adding better arms to the pen.
