  1. Just spitballin' here...maybe try listening to it on a radio.
  2. "Top 9 hitters in the org" isn't the proper comparison. The proper comparison is "top hitters who only play 1st base/DH." And against LH pitching, I don't believe Mauer is at the top of that group.
  3. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O85UfVX7bSk Be not afraid of sucking, some are born sucky, some achieve suckitude, and some have teh suck thrust upon them. - William Shakespeare, noted Twins fan (posts under a psued...sudo...fake name on TD)
  4. I think the plan should be for Mauer to be on the bench more.
  5. If he's subbing for Kepler or Rosario against LH pitching, he's not DHing. If he's DHing, both Rosario and Kepler (and Mauer) are in the lineup against LHers. Or Santana, I guess, which doesn't thrill me. I don't see how that helps much. If they want to give him a try as the fourth OFer, I'm fine with that, even if I think he'll eventually fail. But he doesn't help at DH, They need a RH DH/1b...
  6. I think most everyone here is overrating Grossman. He's not going to come close to matching last year. Low .700s OPS, tops. Park will be the regular DH, and soon. 775-800 OPS
  7. I'm very optimistic about Buxton. I'm hoping for an OPS north of .750, heavy on the XBHs. I'd be OK with the occasional bunt for a hit...maybe 10-ish tries on the year. Just enough to keep the corners up.
  8. http://www.twinkietown.com/2017/3/31/15125998/bucking-convention-twins-head-north-with-25-pitchers Randball's Stu's take.
  9. Most teams don't even carry 1 "long man" any more. And if there was EVER a time you don't need even one long man, much less two, it's the first week of the season. You've just spent 6+ weeks getting every pitcher on the roster ready for opening day. No starter is coming off a long outing, no reliever has even a hint of overwork. Nobody is injured. The ENTIRE bullpen is ready to go....primed for this exact week, and that doesn't even take into account April off days. Sheesh. This has nothing to do with "needing" two long men.
  10. Park is already signed to a contract, so it's not an economic issue.
  11. Monday will be day one. You need 31 before Sep 1, if I remember correctly. Not the way I envisioned the start of the season, I admit. Still, I'm told the opening day roster can change quickly, lets hope they're right.
  12. You didn't, and don't want a Tony Sipp because he would block guys who aren't here? And in his place Breslow and Haley and Belisle?
  13. Gametime is 3:10 PM. Wouldn't that normally be about the time of the high temp for the day? Mid afternoon?
  14. I keep reading this. In addition to questioning what that opinion is based on...I ask what about that opinion makes the opening day roster ok? Why is "it'll change fast" somehow an excuse for the roster? If that's true, why wouldn't you start the season with the changes already made? Except for DL'd players, what's the advantage of starting the season with a less than optimal roster?
  15. Forgive me, but this is...questionable at best. You don't get to claim "value" for having a guy around who's only there because of the short bench, when it was your decision to have a short bench in the first place. Put players on the team who help you win games, not ones who are so bad they're one reason you're losing games, but who are bad in a whole bunch of different spots instead of bad in just one. I very much want to give the new front office the benefit of every doubt, and realize they can't fix every problem over one off season, but man...I'm not impressed so far. At all.
  16. If there's a really good chance they won't be on the roster by the end of the year, there's no good reason for them to be there now. That they are is an indication the front office failed to replace them with someone who is an asset, and likely WILL be there come September. "Eh, he's cheap and easy to replace" isn't the front office I want. I don't actually think Tonkin is the same as Santana, by the way. I don't see the "tools" you mentioned above for Santana, while Tonkin at least throws hard and gets K's. Thats upside.
  17. My guess is, if you are worried, his K's have been noticed by MLB GMs.
  18. I also don't have a problem with Tonkin getting another opportunity over the available options. At risk of repeating myself...it's the available options that is the problem.
  19. Given the options, this isn't surprising. What's disappointing is...these were the options. I realize there weren't too manyoung ways to fix the starting pitching this winter. They've only been on the job a couple months....etc etc etc. But I DID expect a stronger effort to improve the pen. And from the rule 5 draft to FA dabbling instead of investing, little to nothing.
  20. I was also at the game today and the Buxton double was pretty remarkable. It was a routine single to left...IMO the left fielder didn't even have to hustle over towards the line to field it. He took about 6 or 8 steps to his right, fielded the medium line drive on one hop, looked up to lob the ball in, because it was a SINGLE, and it was already too late. Remarkavle.
  21. Mauer will lead the league in fastballs taken down the middle for 0-1 counts, 3 hoppers to second, soft flares to left, excuses offered on TD, LH batters box smoothing out, and aggravating Chief. He'll put up less than 60 RBI, a lower SLG than every regular first baseman in MLB, and spend time on the DL with some non specific ailment or another. Sorry....the guy just annoys me.
  22. the only thing I'd add to this excellent post is....I don't think valuing the bullpen is a "new" currency. I think smart teams have always recognized the importance of dominating the last 3 innings, and it's been mainly saber types pooh poohing the importance of bullpen.
