    It's not quite that simple. If players only played when 100 percent healthy, it'd be rare to see 100 games played in a season. They're always dinged up to one degree or another, it's a long season. Ideally, you'd want every player to want to play if physically able, but have a medical staff and manager capable of saying "no" when appropriate, and have a bench that makes it easier to sit people. In this case, with a broken toe, I would agree they almost certainly rushed him. In the specific case of Morneau...eh, I doubt it. This was a team already giving DH ABs to Jason Tyner.

    I know this is the theory, but I doubt this is actually true. Of course the math says it'll be 50-50 going forward. You take all the teams that lost more close games than they won, add them to the teams that won more than they lost, average it out, and declare "See...it's all luck. 50-50." There are short term variances, of course, but the idea that better teams wouldn't win more close games than lesser teams doesn't make any sense to me. They're better. Over time, they'll do the things that win games--close games or blowouts--more than bad teams.

    I think it's very possible the pitcher was intentionally trying to get the previous two hitters to swing at pitches outside the zone, knowing he had Buxton due up. It's pretty rare for major league pitchers to truly be "unable to throw a strike." And he swung at a fat, nothing FB, right in the "hit me" zone. IMO the problem wasn't that he swung. The problem is, he got a pitch he was waiting for, and was unable to do anything with it.

    Ignoring the somewhat questionable idea that a handful of PAs against any one pitcher is predictive for any hitter, a quick check of BRef shows Buxton with the following line against Duffy: 10 PAs, .222/.300/.556. Two hits including a double and triple, plus a walk. I understand getting Buxton a day off here and there, but it shouldn't be against a LH pitcher. That's pretty questionable, IMO.

    Another nearly half dozen pitches tonight that hit Garver in the glove, but ended up on the dirt. Hands of stone.

    Here are the batting averages for the Twins for Sunday's game at Seattle: .234 .254 .200 .298 .270 .200 .214 .143 .157 I've been around a while, and that's one of lowest collections of BA's I've ever seen for a MLB team more than a week or two into a season. No hyperbole. Perhaps that's what the poster meant.

    I don't think there's much to be learned by comparing the NFL and MLB drafts. They are completely different animals.

    That “career .408 OBP” is 233 PAs in two years combined of the DSL and AZ rookie league. It comes with a .253 BA and .322 SLG. He’s not really worth mentioning in this deal.

    I remember it as the scouts loving Stuart Turner’s defense, not Garver. Garver I remember described as “defensively, he has a chance to be a decent hitter.”

    Molitor’s decision to, yet again, wait until his starter had squandered a lead before removing him was the story of this game. Third time through the order, check. Hard hit balls, check. Confidence visibly eroding, compounded by infield error, check. Becoming strike zone shy, check. Manager confirms he messed up by removing pitcher immediately AFTER damage done, check. This pattern has resulted in at least half a dozen losses this year alone. And he’ll do it again, just wait.

    I don’t care if Ehire Adrianza OPS’d 2.000 over the last week. He’s a weak hitter, he’s not going to get much better, and no matter what his last 20 PAs were, his next 300 will be weak.

    Sano and Buxton simply have to hit for this team to be really good. I don’t blame Falvine for that. But, that isn’t to say they can’t be held accountable for other issues. There is no bench, and there wasn’t much to start the season. And these are the lineups you get when you start the season with no bench, and precious little in AAA that can help.

    I counted four balls tonight that hit Garver in the glove that he didn’t catch, including the SB in the first that led directly to Seattle’s first run. That should happen once a month, maybe. Multiple pitches that he stabbed at. I don’t think he can be the primary catcher. Catcher is just too important. He handles every pitch that isn’t put in play.

    BTW, our dog when I was a young boy-Aware Wolf-was a female. I remember one time I took her uptown, and wouldn't you know it, she stopped walking, plopped down, and had puppies right there on the sidewalk. Our town cop was such a jerk. He came by and yelled at me for 10 minutes, and then gave Aware Wolf a ticket. ... ... For littering.

    It couldn't be more obvious they don't like his catching skills. From what I've seen, I agree with them. Unfortunately, Bobby Wilson isn't any kind of long term answer either. Bite the bullet, do what it takes to get Realmuto here.
