  1. I'm more or less "there is no try, there is only do or not do" kind of guy. Besides which, Falvey himself said last winter the pen wasn't a "priority." So I'm pretty comfortable with "ignore." Doesn't really matter the specifics, in any case. I think it was a mistake not to add, whatever the thought process or reasons.
  2. Ignoring the pen was a huge mistake. I really don't understand claims to the contrary.
  3. -Wasted good starter outing, made to look a little worse with shoddy defense, check. -Approach 50% of team's outs via K, check -winless opponant starter with ERA near 5 and WHIP over 1.5 carries no hitter into middle innings, check -team somehow grabs lead, only to see pen cough it right back up, check
  4. "Interesting Fact: Two Twins legends, Rod Carew and Torii Hunter, took deals with the Angels after a long battle with the front office over salaries." There was certainly salary acrimony, but Carew didn't leave as a free agent. The Twins traded Carew to the Angels in Feb 79, for Kenny Landreaux and 3 others of little consequence.
  5. The Twins haven't won a road series since opening the season in KC. About time.
  6. I don't know how anyone can still claim there are "low leverage " spots in a modern bullpen. They don't exist. Every single guy out there is going to be asked to pitch in close games. Every single guy. We deserve all the gut wrenching losses we accumulate for planning otherwise.
  7. Pagan is just today's manifestation of the real issue: the failure to address a thin bullpen over the winter. Now it's too late. You're stuck with what you have (2 deep in the pen, hopefully a little from Thielbar at some point) until July at least, when you'll pay a premium for the few if any real upgrades that come available.
  8. Pretty good sign that Bailey can come out clearly fighting it and still give us 6 IP 1 run against a good lineup. That was impressive, to me at least.
  9. For the record, Mauer singled in the infamous 11th inning Cuzzi "foul ball" incident. So Mauer was on 1st, not 2nd, leading off the top of the 11th. The Twins loaded the bases with no outs that inning but didn't score. https://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/NYA/NYA200910090.shtml
  10. Solano's AB just prior to Kirilloff's comes to mind, as does the 0-2 pitch to Martinez that tied the game in the bottom of the 10th. Lots of things. Even in Kirilloff's AB he had a great pitch to hit a sac fly on 0-1, and missed it.
  11. Cuzzi missed two calls, but blaming the umpire for last night's loss misses the real reasons.
  12. Jeffers has 22 PAs against LH pitching this year, Vazquez 13. Neither has has many PAs. And Vazquez has hit .167/.154/.167. for a .321 OPS in those 13. Jeffers has a .697 OPS in his 22 PAs against lefties. .978 vs RH pitching. Facing LH pitching hasn't been any kind of advantage to date. In fact it's hurt both, and Vazquez has been putrid. Even up the playing time for a month and see what that looks like. For the record starters have done just fine with both catchers. I believe the team is 2 games over .500 when Jeffers starts, 3 over when Vazquez starts.
  13. I think Jeffers has earned a more equal distribution of playing time.
  14. At least there was a reason for the Mahle trade. Team in first. Desperate for starting pitching. What was the thought process behind unloading Pressly?
  15. Cruz for Ryan the best, but a sort of a no-brainer. The kind of trade any noncontender makes at the deadline. Expiring contract for prospects. Still, full credit for the return. Worst is Pressly for sure. Completely unnecessary. The kind of trade bad teams make. Extraordinary talent for meh.
  16. Absolutely, positively 100 percent concur the offense is a problem. However, last night the offense handed the pen a lead. Whether the lead is 6-5, or 2-1, the job is the same. The pen gave up a five spot last night, and for the 9th time already took the L. It'd be nice to give the pen a bigger lead, for sure. Or increase the lead once on a while. But ultimately it's the bullpen that failed, again, last night.
  17. Stringer brought it up in the game thread, and I concur...Alcala will be in *Rochester tomorrow. Maybe just me, but the bullpen concerns me. Edit: *St Paul Tip o' the cap to Indiana Twin
  18. Griffin Jax has recorded 27% of the team's losses this year to date. Not really interested in hearing how unlucky he is.
  19. Bad trade, in retrospect, but I can't really hold it against the front office. However, throwing good money after bad by extending him? I'd consider that really poor management, and I'd be shocked if it happened.
