  1. It's a little sobering to look back at the past winners. No real stars there.
  2. Given that catcher is probably the most injury-prone position (except centerfield on the Twins), we really need three catchers. Can Astudillo or someone from the farm be the third if you trade one of the top three?
  3. It was in Seattle, where he had never performed well. Seattle is a couple of hours' drive (plus an hour waiting for US Customs) from his home in BC and he always had lots of family in the crowd there. We all have our issues with Gardie, but he was a decent "man manager," at least on this occasion. He got Justin to relax and not try to hit every pitch 500 feet. So many prospects look great and then flame out, lose confidence, and drop out of sight. That day set Justin on a course for the Twins' HOF.
  4. Just as we expected in April.
  5. But does he really deserve Minor League Pitcher of the Day when he's pitching for the Twins? I guess that at this point of the season the Twins vs. Cubs might qualify as minor league ...
  6. It figures that the Air Force guy is into the "big fly."
  7. Kepler came up through the Twins' system during the Terry Ryan era. My recollection is that the Twins were much more focused on hitting the ball hard to all fields in those days, which explains the high average in the high minors. But now he seems to have bought totally into the "hit it as hard as I can to right field" philosophy and it has (IMO) ruined him at the plate in exchange for a few extra HRs each year. Can he go back to his foundations? Should he?
  8. Except for Cruz, all are pitchers. If the Twins had a terrific pitching staff, one could say they had dealt from strength. In real life, not so much.
  9. That would be remarkable (improbable, though possible if the bases were loaded and they trailed by 3-5 runs in the ninth inning at home) if true, but I think you mean "final three innings."
  10. I dislike Simmons both because of the selfish covid caper and because his affect on the field is highly unattractive. He never acts like he cares, never seems to smile, and just seems like he's counting the dollars per inning and waiting to get back to the hotel. Maybe it's not fair to judge a guy based on his demeanor, but I suspect that this is one reason that he gets so much flack. He is an aging player who was a great fielder (and is still good) but was never a good hitter (and is now poor). In other words, about what we should have expected. Surely not even close to the worst ever signing.
  11. In other words, he gives up 5 home runs at Yankee Stadium.
  12. I mean, a win is nice, but now they need a new barn. Maybe it was inevitable after starting a guy from Burnsville...
  13. Maybe the Twins can find him a barber before tomorrow night...
  14. And after doing everything he could to lose the game in the 9th, he ends up with a +0.214 WPA?
  15. They probably want the Twins (and maybe Yankees) to get out before the airports close.
  16. Looks like a hurricane and flood warnings in the forecast, so I'm betting there is no game.
  17. Of course, that couldn't have anything whatsoever to do with ESPN being centered in New England ...
  18. I think I remember that The Sporting News, back when it was the definitive baseball Bible before the Internet took over, ranked 1991 as the best of the first 100 World Series. Does someone else remember this? Anything I'm too lazy to look up online?
  19. It's easy to go Obervoard after a couple of good starts...
  20. My prediction: They'll waive him. Detroit will pick him up. He will hit 45 HRs for them next year batting between Baddoo and Schoop.
  21. Maybe it was the talent that got poached that was responsible for the success?
  22. I vote for Falvey to come in to pitch and see what it feels like. And no DH. He gets to hit, too.
  23. It's fun to see pitchers succeed without throwing 120 mph.
  24. If he played this season a couple hundred miles north, India could be an Indian!
