  1. I will never believe this. Defense is important at catcher: it's either him or the backstop. But if he's truly a MLB player, he must hit.
  2. Comparing Mauer to Torre and Simmons is a great analogy: All 3 catchers early in their careers and moved to other positions. I've always had a theory that players who make that type of move will lose some of their hitting skills because they are no longer "into the game". They lose some concentration at the plate when they don't have the same involvement in the game being behind the plate. It's an adjustment period. This could be Joe's year.
  3. I'm happy to see some guys from the Twins playing in the Winter Leagues and not resting on their laurels. How do these leagues compare to the MiLB system? What's the caliber of the local team?
  4. The key is who's in the bullpen, not in the rotation. I liked May in the rotation. He was something the Twins haven't had: a pitcher that has the ability to strike guys out. And I think everyone recognizes what the problem is now: Ryan went one step to far in the signing of veteran pitchers to bailout the starting staff. In the bullpen, it sounds questionable whether or not any of the big arms in the MiLB can get the job done. The combo of the 2 puts May in the bullpen. Now if a Tonkin, Meyer, etc. takes over a couple spots, then I can't see how the Twins could keep May out of the rotation.
  5. Walker and Kepler have to of the prettiest AB mechanics I've ever seen. Balanced and repeatable. Arcia? It's seems like it's always been about pitch selection and keeping his head in the game.
  6. The starting rotation has 3 spots that I say are mortal locks: Santana, Hughes and Gibson. Obviously, the first 2 is a contract thing. But also, we haven't seen enough of Santana yet and you just don't dump a guy who had one very good year, followed by a very hit-able year. Gibson: well, he improved over the previous year. IMHO: that leave 2 spots in the rotation up for grabs. The issue with May is few things: Other rotation options are available He probably didn't get enough starts to prove he belongs in the rotation. Because of.... Need. And success in the bullpen. The dude stood up to the challenge and was successful. It's not the 1st time in the history of Baseball that a starter work some time in the bullpen before being returned to the rotation. As I remember, Adam Wainwright is the pitcher most commented on in TD. On the flip side: Wainwright was 23-24 in a fraction of the first year and a full season in the 2nd in the bullpen. He returned to the rotation at age 25. May is 26.
  7. "May was 8-9 with a 4.00 ERA last season, but he put up a 2.87 ERA in 32 games as a reliever." That, and the bizarre overload of SP's, is why he'll be in the bullpen. But I think there are far more interesting things in that article. Molitor on Buxton: "We’re going to give this guy an opportunity here and I’m hoping he is ready to go. If not, then we will give him some at-bats in Triple-A. I think it is going to be a matter of time before we see him get established up here.” Does he mean Buxton starts in the majors or is he talking spring training. THANKS, PAUL
  8. Pohlad's vs. the Wilf's. Far different types of people: The Pohlad brothers inherited the banking business from their father. Bankers, by their very nature, are conservative in all things, especially money, The Wilf's; parents were Holocaust survivors from Poland. Migrated to US in early 1950's. The father Joseph and uncle Harry began purchasing apartment buildings and renting units. Then building homes, became real estate developer, formed a corporation, etc. Get the pattern here? Always building. Does it surprise anyone that the Wilf's are more aggressive that the Pohlad's?
  9. Arcia LF, Rosario CF Sano RF 4th OF - Santana, Buxton and a stretcher and oxygen tank for Rosario. A guy who's gonna cover 2/3rds of the outfield is gonna need a lot of extra help and O2 Bench Bat - Arcia DH - Park
  10. Fun read. Thanks!
  11. Just plain beautiful. http://www.theplayerstribune.com/michael-cuddyer-retirement/
  12. Well, Nick, I just can't see an OF with both Sano and Arcia in it at the same time. While we don't know how Sano will play in the OF, I still don't like moving a guy who was successful last year to accommodate 2 defensive stiffs like those 2. Come to think of it: why do so many think Arcia will get the chance? I don't know what happened to him last season, but Arcia had a horrible year. While I like the combo of Nunez and Santana as bench players, I don't like the idea of a talented kid like Santana being regulated to the bench. Nunez is a career backup. Find another like him. Buxton: it's not about the BA, it's about the PA's. Pitching: ugh. I'd rather see Nolasco in the BP and Milone elsewhere than keep Duffy and Berrios out of the rotation. Milone has some trade value. They WILL need May in the BP
  13. So, you're going to make this comment about every comment made here, which are posting comments about other articles or Tweets being made? Wait, what ?!?!
  14. Len III: "Was told by two people that Tony Sipp and Antonio Bastardo are NOT on Twins radar. A trade might be the best route to add a LHP."
  15. Buxton is overrated. I think that is pretty obvious from his performance with the Twins last year. He is at least a year away. Which is too bad, because they will need someone with Buxton's speed to cover for Sano's inexperience. If Buxton's perceived value is viewed as high by the Rays, Buxton get's McGee. An article from yesterday on what the Marlins turned down from the Red Sox's for Fernandez: http://nesn.com/2015/12/marlins-official-reveals-huge-red-sox-package-wanted-for-jose-fernandez/
  16. TR has already said he has no interest in Bastardo. I'm with Stringer on May: I think he will end up in the bullpen, a victim of the success he had there last year. Perkins can not be the closer on his own. At least not the way the Twins have been using him. Perkins and Jepsen as co-closers May and a pitcher to be named later Nolasco long and whomever amongst the young arms who shows the most in spring training Who to trade for McGee? If the Twins are serious about him, start with Buxton. People are overrating the Twins prospects and grossly underrating the value of quality RP's this year. But it won't matter. Jon Morosi says: "The Twins are also known to be looking for left-handed relief help, and indications late in this week’s Winter Meetings were that Minnesota isn’t likely to make a play for top-of-the-market free agent lefties."
  17. Still not sure who triggered Sano's shutdown or why. Not sure I care. The latest from the Twins is they wanted Sano out of Winter Ball to concentrate on losing weight and learn how to play OF.
  18. As part of a Strib column, La Velle E. Neal III wrote: Santana the outfielder The Twins remain in the market for a fourth outfielder, but they might already have one. Danny Santana, who showed plenty of promise in 2014 but struggled and lost the starting shortstop job in 2015, is going to start playing more outfield. That gives the Twins another option if top prospect Byron Buxton has a poor spring training or if they need a backup outfielder. Santana hit .319 in 2014. As a center fielder, he batted .316 with a .843 on-base-plus-slugging percentage. As a shortstop, he batted .295 with a .716 OPS. He started last season at short, batted .218 through 49 games and was sent to the minors for the first of two demotions. So the Twins are wondering if not worrying about playing shortstop will help him unleash his offensive potential.
  19. It's a good trade. Hicks, with some MLB experience, still has room to improve at age 26. Murphy, so far, is projected to be a 2 way player: a catcher that can hit. When was the last time the Twins had one of those? Butch Wynegar?
  20. 100% agree. The big market teams need to make big market splashes in the Winter Meetings. The teams below that are making contact, getting leads from scouts, agents and other league sources. From what I can see early in the morning, Sipp and Bastardo are still available.
  21. Goose Gossage didn't care about no sinkin' lefties. Just find another Gossage!
  22. Quote: "That indicated to me that the club is neither sold of Escobar as its shortstop nor convinced that Santana is doomed at the position." Oh, come on. The last game of the season, you can't draw this type of conclusion. Escobar is the starting shortstop next season. Quote: "...so I believe Danny Santana's last shot as an everyday player with the Twins (barring injury of course) is as the Opening Day center fielder next season." This makes a lot of sense, baring a new outfielder stepping in and taking over a spot so that Rosario gets shifted to center.
  23. Loved to watch Lee pound the strikezone [and not in the Phil Hughes way]. I just don't understand the interest. He's now 37 [38 at the end of Aug.] and has missed darn near 2 years because of injuries. And that's not counting the injuries throughout the years. Pass, sadly.
  24. Imminent Front, it's a put on.......
  25. Chris Cotillo's reasoning: "San Diego has shown interest in Nolasco in the past, pursuing him in free agency two years ago and being linked to him at last July's non-waiver trade deadline." "Nolasco may still be appealing to clubs looking for a bounceback candidate, especially if Minnesota is willing to pick up some of his remaining salary." IDK, pretty thin. Maybe a late Winter Meetings deal?
