  1. If a guy can throw five innings giving up only one hit, I really don't give a darn about "missing bats". I would like to see him hit 27 consecutive bats if the result is a couple of singles followed by double plays. Missed bats are more important for relievers coming in with runners on base. But even then, I have nothing against a double play. Missed bats are sexy but not manditory.
  2. Don't the Twins employ pitching coaches who can teach Tonkin how to get movement. Getting movement can't be a magic trick that only a few know.
  3. Sixteen top prospects about to hit the majors over the next three years? The next ten years should be fun for Twins fans.
  4. The sad (or sickening) part of this is that $100 million isn't considered "enough" by players or agents. The average US two-income family makes about $5.5 million over a 45-year career (assuming $60,000 a year for each person) and they are very content. Players get that much for part of one season. And the two-income family (assuming they have children) can hardly afford tickets to more than one or two games a year. The entire system is perverse. And before I get jumped on for being "jealous", I don't begrudge the players for taking what the owners want to hand out. I just wish that the owners would use a lot of this money and give away tickets to low-income families, lower tickets prices for families, and just donate half of what they spend on players to charities.
  5. Isn't the splitter thrown edactly like a fastball, only with fingers split apart? Why would that make it more harmful to the elbow? I always thought that any pitch that involved snapping your wrist put more strain on the elbow than a straight pitch.
  6. Unbridled optimism? Aren't you a Twins fan? Mildly hoping for a pleasant summer is more our style.
  7. So you spend $400 million on Price and Greinke; lock them up for eight years; and what would have happened? You go from a 70 win team to a 85 win team? Still might not be in the playoffs. And you've financially put yourself in a major bind when their skills are rapidly dimishing and Sano, Buxton, Perkins, etc are looking at new contracts. Bad, bad idea. Skip the spending when you aren't winning and possess a great farm system. If Sano and Buxton hadn't both missed 2014, this might have been year 1 of a long reign. Instead, start planning for 2017 and the free agent class of 2018.
  8. Regardless, they still thought he was not worth what he signed for.
  9. When Bastardo signed, analysts on The MLB channel (Sirius Radio) thought the Pirates overpaid him. I'm happy the Twins did not pursue him. Hopefully the young arms are about ready to make the jump to the majors.
  10. I agree and for that reason, I can't understand why so many posters hate Milone. Just because he doesn't throw in the mid-nineties doesn't mean he can't be a very effective back-end starter.
  11. Let Buxton have center field from day 1. His defense alone makes it worth while and when he adjusts to ML pitching, he'll be there for years.
  12. I'sure glad they play baseball games on a field instead of a computer. All these projection models and fancy statistical models don't show heart, hussle, and attitude. I'm just hoping the youth movement progresses rapidly and the kids play their butts off. It should be a good 2016 and possibly a wonderful 2017.
  13. I'm hoping that by mid-season, we see a starting rotation of Santana, Gibson, Duffy, May, and Berrios and a bullpen of Perkins, Jepson, Burdi, Chargois, Melotakis, Fien, Meyer, and Rogers. Hughes and Nolasco either are traded or Sent to Rochester. Get the rebuild into full blown mode.
  14. I've also seen him listed as 5'10" and 215, which is probably closer to reality.
  15. Running into Maurer might solve the Plouffe/Sano quandry.
  16. I never said Ryan lied to Beradino. I still believe the language you quoted is not telling me that they are not ever going to entertain any offers. What he said, according to what you posted, was that they "hadn't entertained any offers." That is the past tense of the verb. That does not preclude considering offers in the future. Maybe Ryan doesn't understand how to use words properly. If he meant to say what you imply, he should have said "we have not and will not entertain any offers." That is definitive. It is also not open to interpretation. And it still is concise. This meets your criteria. What he did say doesn't meet your criteria. Proper use of the English language is important when attempting to make clear your position. And no, I'm not an English teacher. But I did edit textbooks and corporate documents for many years and I know how the improper use of language can change the meaning of a message.
  17. I think the very fact of several people have taken opposing positions is proof enough the the statements weren't definitive. I agree that they were concise - because concise means "brief and without any extra or unnecessary information."
  18. If a GM calls and says "I'll give you my best utility infielder and my 63rd best prospect for Plouffe" and Ryan doesn't "entertain" this trade offer, that does not mean he isn't open to a trade. I think he is trying to say he didn't get a worthwhile offer and did it in GM-speak to not hurt Plouffe's feelings. Personally, I have more confidence in Twins management (which includes Molitor) than I do in the declarations of arm chair GMs - myself included.
  19. By not saying something definitive, his words are open to different opinions. This forum appears to be pretty evenly split on the true meaning. No need to get upset whenever someone disagrees with you.
  20. So the "have no intention" quote was just your interpretation of what Beradino said that Ryan said (which reminds me of playing telephone in first grade - it never comes back the same). My interpretation is he didn't see anything he liked and to buoy Plouffe's ego, he says Plouffe wasn't going anwhere. To me, that's quite different.
  21. Can you ptovide me a link to this? I've Googled Beradino talking about Plouffe, Ryan talking to Beradino, and Beradino talking about Plouffe and I can't find anything from 2016. I'm not in the Midwest so I don't get all the information you have by reading the Pioneer Press. The only quote I found was that the Twins had not had any substantial discussions on trading Plouffe.
  22. And you know this for a fact? Or are you surmising this because they didn't consult you? If any team really wanted to acquire Plouffe, all they had to do is pick up a phone, offer Ryan several great players (which many posters seem to feel he is worth), and the deal would have been made. My belief is that no one was willing to part with anyone worthwhile to the Twins, so the front office maintained the misconception that they would never trade Plouffe. I think this July, if any team needs some offense at third base, Plouffe will be traded for a lot more than the Twins would have gotten this winter. Too many posters seem to believe that this team is close to a World Series run right now. Maybe in 2017, but not now. Too many holes yet to be filled.
  23. Two things I would like to say. 1. One year ago, the Twins (both front office and fans) were hoping to remove themselves from the 90-loss level and maybe reach .500 baseball. One step they made to reach this "lofty" goal was to bring back Hunter. It was hoped he would make some contributions on the field, but his primary role was to mentor younger players. In my opinion, he fulfilled his contract. I think people get too caught up in the mystical 2015 playoff run and forget the Twins were not that good. 2. I've repeatedly read about Sano being an athleticly gifted young man. I have no reason to doubt this statement. Based on my 50 years of playing experience (little league up to and including over-50 leagues) playing 1st base, 3rd base, and the outfield (also a little shortstop but not enough to matter), I feel that 3rd base is the most physically demanding. If people think Sano is athletic enough to play 3rd base, then he should be able to handle right or left field. Remember, a far less athletic Harmon Killebrew played left field for the Twins and no one complained about that.
  24. I spent my first 35 years in the Twin Cities and grew up a Twins fan (anyone else remember Kurt Bevacqua?). Even though I haven't lived there since 1982, I'm still a die-hard fan. I ran across Twins Daily this spring and I love it. With the current state of the big league team, I'm finding stories about what might lay ahead very interesting. I'll be moving from Austin, Texas to Portland Maine in August (when I retire) and I'm looking forward to seeing the Rock Cats play in Portland (or I may take a trip to New Britain if Buxton hasn't been pulled up yet). Keep up the great work. I enjoy the articles and the information (even though a lot of the sabrmetrics are over my head - I'm old and only used to what I grew up with).
