  1. Unfortunately I predict that Joe will lead the league in taking first pitch strikes. He'll also rank high in GIDP, and be near the top of "things that should be changed on the Twins" discussions on the site.
  2. Seth - How did Perkins look to you? Is he healthy? Did he change his offseason regimen at all to try and prevent the second half problems he has had the past two years?
  3. I was a Carew fan growing up, but Kirby certainly stole my heart as well. I remember listening to his first game on the radio while in college and Herb trying to describe that 4 hit game by this new guy. What was Reggie Jackson's comment about Kirby - something like "he's just another slap hitter." Reggie was never very perceptive! The 1987 and 1991 seasons are the best memories for many Minnesota sports fans, and Kirby was right at the center of it. I proudly displayed my Puckett jersey in my cube for about a week after he died. I received many positive responses to that, and many great memories of Kirby.
  4. I'm also getting tired of the "he is too short" crap. Maddox and Johan were only 6'0" (probably on their tip toes). Lincecum is 5'11. I'm not saying Berrios should be compared to these guys, just that shorter pitchers can be successful.
  5. Thanks for the walk down memory lane, Nick. The 1989 draft was terrific, especially when you consider all the "branches" from it. Lots of interesting tracing in that. I'd be curious if the Viola trade had similar impact, besides several piece of the 1991 championship team. I also wish Duensing well. He appeared to be a class act and did what the Twins asked of him.
  6. Great picture of Hicks - all smiles after reaching base. Good thing he enjoyed that moment as there was little offensive success after that. Nice depth pick-up for the Twins but certainly he is not an important piece of the Twins' future. I hope he proves me wrong.
  7. I'm impressed with TD readers as there is an article about Twins catchers and no one (yet) has suggested moving Mauer back behind the plate (until now). Looks like we finally all accepted that moving Mauer back behind the plate was not going to happen. YIPPIE!
  8. Seems like just yesterday that prized prospect Cuddyer got his first call up with the Twins. I believe it was a pinch runner, but as a fan it w nice to see "the future". Kind of like this past season with both Sano and Buxton seeing time on the major league roster.
  9. Yes the wonderful memories of Minnesota's first major sports championship since the Lakers left town. The 1987 team showed a ton of resiliency throughout the season and the postseason. I was really nervous when Sheridan hit that 2 run bomb in the 8th off of Reardon in game 3 to give the Tigers a comeback win and momentum. I thought it might turn the series around for the Tigers, but the Twins came right back and took games 4 and 5 to the surprise of many. Then the party at the Dome and an up, down, up series with the Cardinals. I'll never forget that season. It was truly special! Thanks Parker!
  10. I agree with a couple of the posters that calling Gibson the most valuable pitcher and Dozier the most valuable player is kind of "the best of the worst" award. That said, the team itself performed much better as a whole. Here's hoping that what the Twins have in place (coaching staff, core roster, etc.) continues to improve and next season if we see "real" MVPs (pitcher and player) performances, that will directly result in more wins!
  11. I agree with all the complimentary comments above. I look forward to my "daily" Twins Daily read, and look forward to all the news and rumors during what should be a very interesting off season.
  12. Several things could happen between now and next April, but there should be one opening available in the bullpen for one of the traditional "starters" - that being the "long relief" guy. For some reason the Twins decided to have Rule 5er J.R. Graham in that role this season. I don't see that happening in 2016 unless several injuries/trades alter the Twins pitching landscape.
  13. I believe that Thome's blast off of Blackie is still in orbit!
  14. I echo the "terrific analysis, Parker" from the above posts. I love what Sano is doing and hope he keeps it up. My question/concern is how soon before opposing teams REALLY start pitching around him? The best thing the Twins can do for Sano is get a solid hitting threat batting after Sano in the line-up.
  15. H20 - From what I recall, Santana, Nolasco for sure, and possibly Pelfrey were "top 10 starting pitching free-agents" when each of them hit the market. I'm not arguing the fact that these signings have not turned out as well as hoped, but the Twins needed starting pitching and these were some of the best available in free agency. Thus I don't blame the F.O. - at least they tried.
  16. What makes the Kernels offensive explosion even more impressive is that they did it against a pitcher who was 8-1 with a 2.33 ERA coming into the game, and they blew him out in the first inning! Way to go CR!
  17. I hope it is injuries, but I suspect Arcia has regressed as a hitter AND opposing pitchers have discovered how to pitch to him. I'd love for the Twins to have too many players who deserve roster spots coming out of Spring Training next year. That is a GOOD problem to have.
  18. Sano is a charismatic individual that has the personality to be the face of a franchise. With Joe Mauer stepping aside to usher in the next wave of youth, the Twins young stars will become the emulated ballplayers of the future. Have to question the Mauer stepping aside statement. I'm not seeing Mauer stepping aside willingly for the next 3 seasons given he has $23M reasons not to. A lot can happen between now and then.
  19. Anyone know what Danny Santana's injury is, and how serious? If he is going to be out for a bit, why not shift Polanco to AAA and get Gordon a cup of coffee at AA?
  20. The box score shows that Buxton was 3-5 last night. Also the Red Wings rally that fell short was against Joba Chamberlain who now has a spiffy 14.4 ERA and 2.6 WHIP at AAA. I hope the Blue Jays aren't relying on him for anything the rest of the season.
  21. If the Twins traded for Tulo or Lucroy, the answer would be "both" depending on what they give up for them as they could help now and for the next several years (at least until Gordon is ready in the case of Tulo).
  22. The Twins need at SS is very short term (the rest of this season any maybe 2016). By then, hopefully either Santana, Polanco or Nick Gordon will be ready and able to grab the position long term. As a result, I'd be very hesitant to bring in someone who is no more than a stop-gap option.
  23. Arcia has even less trade value in the National League due to his poor defense, which is where the three targets in this article currently reside. We'll see if "Tradin Terry" can pull off something to help the team this year, and without mortgaging the future.
  24. Thanks Parker. When I hear change-up I immediately think of Frankie V. and Johan. Their's were DEADLY! I wonder how long it might take for opposing hitters to catch on to this? Gibson was interviewed from the dugout last Saturday in KC on the FOX TV broadcast and gave a detailed description of how and when he is throwing his change-up. That plus articles like this one leads me to believe that opposing hitters are/will be aware of this approach. Does that make a difference?
