  1. It was reported negatively in 1978. Said one businessman in attendance: "made it clear that although he doesn't have anything against blacks, he sure hates the poor bastards. I can see why he has trouble with some of his players after listening to him talk". That's a quote from the Minneapolis Tribune. There was also a full length article in the StarTribune in 2014 by Howard Sinker: https://www.startribune.com/recalling-ex-twins-owner-griffith-s-bigoted-outburst/257189521/ It was also the lede in an SBNation article in 2014: https://www.sbnation.com/mlb/2014/5/1/5672616/donald-sterling-baseball-racist-owners-calvin-griffith-bowie-kuhn In that article, he is quoted as saying "Why are you writing this kind of article that is so controversial? You are really causing a lot of friction. It's not good for baseball and it's not good for the people of Minnesota. The truth hurts a lot of people. And that's it." There's a whole section devoted to this in a 2012 book: The National Pastime: Baseball in the Northstar State. Author Kevin Hennessy writes: "Personally, I have been working in Waseca the past three years, and it appears that even the most marginal baseball fan is aware of that story of that day. Few obituaries for Calvin in 1999 were run without mention of the Waseca talk being the low point in Calvin’s career, and his life." As to the "saving grace" that he had Latino players on the club, he said this in 1978: "Why do we have colored ballplayers on our club? They are the best ones. If you don't have them, you're not going to win." Yeah, really sounds like he's fighting a blow for racial equality there.
  2. "Banging the drum" might not be the best metaphor to roll out when talking about someone on the Houston Astros...
  3. Remember - Berrios' ERA+ his first season was putrid (53). He's only had three seasons to balance out that average. Since then, he's been at 114, 111, and 124.
  4. On the two-year anniversary of this trade, it was fun (in a train-wreck sort of way) to read through all the angst about Odorizzi. For those wondering, Palacios is still really struggling in the minors, with a .210/.275/.266 slash line between A+ and AA last year.
  5. Yeah, but I hear Kirby's medical report showed some issues...
  6. No matter how many times you say it, this isn't about a "feel good story". This is about the majority of our outfield being injured. Rooker apparently is also injured (and can only play LF), and apparently they didn't feel that Kiriloff was ready.
  7. Just an update - because I haven't seen it anywhere else on here. Tyler Austin was dfa'd by San Francisco. He cleared waivers and was released. Milwaukee has picked him up on a minor league contract. All that hand-wringing when he was traded...
  8. Re: Kepler - "This was his 33rd home run of the season, which moved him closer to the single season record for a Twins outfielder, as informed by our Twins Daily own Ted Schwerzler" It also gave him the most home runs in a season by a European-born player. He beats out Bobby Thompson in that famous 1951 season. AND, is nice payback for getting plunked the night before
  9. Curious as to what they do with that open spot on the 40-man...
  10. The link in the opening paragraph for Starting Pitcher of the Month links back to the May article...
  11. Mike Sixel, on 01 Jul 2019 - 11:47 AM, said: https://www.fangraph...t=-1,1&team=min I see him at 6th there right now..... Weird. Thanks for that link. Not sure how they have two versions of it you can get to, hah! The first link is their pre-season 2019 list. The second is their "Updated 2019" list, which does have him jumping way up.
  12. "The Twins and White Sox faced off at Target Field in a series that started on May 24th and the Twins were ruthlessly efficient in beating them by 7 runs in each game. The White Sox took that series but I have a feeling that the series does not reflect the 2019 Twins very well." Wait...huh?
  13. I'd love them to get Giles - then people around here would finally start pronouncing my last name properly!
  14. And yet, we are nearly on page four discussing it. Exactly what the owners of the site hope for...
  15. Raise your hand if you thought this winter we'd be arguing over whether or not the 2019 Twins would reach 100 wins. Anyone?
  16. Remember, Graterol was pulled from his last start due to tightness in his neck. Would make no sense to do that and then have his next start be his MLB debut. And Poppen's 14 walks in 19 innings at AA have me less than convinced that he's ready. We've got a strong top four in the rotation, but there's little depth that's immediately available.
  17. Unrelated to Booker, but the Honorable Mentions ranking flips Gonsalves and Gordon from where they were originally ranked.
  18. How well does Nick Anderson have to pitch before he gets a little prospect love? Since switching from starting to relieving, he's been ridiculous at every level. Can't find out anything about his stuff out there.
  19. I've seen it mentioned a couple of times that Kinley would have to clear waivers before a trade could be worked out. The rules aren't terribly clear on that, but seem to suggest that he would need to clear waivers only if being offered back to Miami, but not for a trade to keep him. Does anyone have a source that clarifies? Since we know that teams can trade Rule 5 picks to another team without passing him through waivers, wouldn't it follow that they could make a trade with Miami without that hindrance?
  20. Of course, it was Graterol's birthday, too. (You get a birthday! You get a birthday!) Mine, also. But I had a lousy day on the mound, so...
  21. It was Tyler Wells birthday, so you almost have to give it to him in that circumstance!
  22. Seventy-four pitches through 3.1 innings, and the last three batters were double, walk, walk.
  23. He threw more change ups in five innings than he did in pretty much his entire season last year. Do you think hitters don't figure that out and sit on a pitch a guy is working on? Spring training isn't about stat lines - not for the vets.
