  1. My initial thought on that was the lions/tigers in Gladiator, chained to a leash. Are you not entertained?
  2. No, no, and more no. Let the game monitor itself. Like others have said, it's on the batters to adapt to to this (not so) new defensive strategy. I'm not sure how you can legislate teams to not optimize their defensive plans based on 'real' numbers. Will they come back with 'oh, it's a short fence in left field at Fenway, so you can only have 3 RH batters in your line-up', because how is that any different? Let Manfred create his own off-season game where you don't even have defense in the field, you just paint it up and electrify it like the Marlins HR atrocity, sort of like they have at TopGolf.
  3. Been reading about all the losses (alleged or not) that MLB has (and maybe will again) taken with the pandemic, and wondered how the tax dollar stream to pay off Target Field has been affected, if at all. Even though it is county-wide, the ghost town of downtown Mpls can't bode well for "money spent". I wonder how many tax $$$ have been lost to internet vs "in person" shopping, for virtually anything and everything. Then I wondered, what's the situation in other MLB cities with new or newish stadiums that are still being paid for? So, kind of an open question....
  4. Wait a minute; when the Stock Market is down, that's when you buy, buy, buy. You've just stated that everyone is going to be looking to save money and that means that salaries are going to be depressed. The Twins make pretty good profits year after year after year. You said you'd roll with the same team 'if you could' but that it'd cost $150M to do so. Well then, what better year to do so than this one, where everyone else is (in theory) decreasing their payroll, ie; talent level? Maybe you let Cruz go due to the Donaldson duplication there, but why not actually go after winning the World Series? That's what we're here for, right? Yes, I know it's a business, but if you liked your team's chances before, investing NOW actually increases your chances of winning it all. I realize the 'fans in the stands' is a crapshoot, but what would a serious run, or god forbid winning it all, do for $$$ inflow (or player's desire to play here) over the next several years? I know, it's not my money, but if not now, when?
  5. You can't cherry pick your numbers like that; I mean, you can, but it isn't a true reflection of what you're getting. Like: (he missed most of 2019 so we can ignore that year) . No, you can't. Some guys are/get hurt more than others, simply a fact. Now, over the last two of three years, what was the "availability" (to pitch) of our 3 guys you're trying to replace vs. that of your 'prospects'? Total innings pitched? Lefty/Righty splits? For that matter, over the last 3 years, what was the aggregate winning % of the teams/batters that these guys faced? You get a much clearer and 'true' picture then.
  6. I see a guy whose numbers suggest that he can't find the plate and is forced to throw his low movement FB to keep from walking guys and pays the price for it. Moving away from Coors will put him in heavier air, which will help the movement on the FB but will also exacerbate his plate finding issues with the rest of his pitches. With the previous shoulder issues and a plan to get him to use the slider more will probably earn him TJ surgery in 1-2 years in trying to 'remake' his throwing motion.
  7. Unless they figure out he needs glasses, or has an "aha" moment, it doesn't matter at this point; If they were going to do it, his value would have been higher a year or two ago because he still had some "intrigue" left; but now he is a known quantity, and unless a team has a specific need for "him", it will be tough to fleece another them in a trade. So, that said, and Donaldson's propensity for injury, might as well keep him unless they're totally blown away by an offer. So shop? No. Listen to offers? You bet.
  8. One could also argue that that methodology limits the quality of the arm you will get. Teams aren't going to give up their best arms, and the Twins aren't likely to outpay anyone for them either. So really, you're getting other team's B- to C- guys that they have replacements for and you hope to fix-up a bit. Steady, but not spectacular performance. Makes for consistent regular season performance, but not quite enough to win in the payoffs. Sound familiar?
  9. How quickly they forget..... Carlos Silva on 8/3/04 CGSO giving up 11 hits, but getting 6 DP's, in a 99 pitch effort; glove in the air and ball thrown into the upper deck along the 1st base line as game completed. And yet, here we are...
  10. Would this trade have been made if Maeda was making $6M (still cheap) a year, instead of 3?
  11. Thing to keep in mind with the whole 'air resistance' of the ball going back up, is pitchers will also see an uptick in their ball movement as the higher resistance interacts with the air on the way to the plate. So it won't be just the hitting for distance that will decrease, but also the ability to get good, squared up contact with the ball will also be harder to achieve.
  12. Granted, he gets no say in the matter but that style of usage would really cut into his earning capabilities; contract is really structured on his getting healthy and making starts moreso than just spot pitching and picking up stray innings. If he's a hot temper sort of guy, he would probably not be too happy with your scenario.... Incentives: $1 million for 5 games started or 25 innings $1M for 7 starts/35 innings $1M for 9 starts/45 innings $1.5M for 11 starts/55 innings $2M for 13 starts/65 innings $3M for 15 starts/75 innings
  13. Leeeeewwwwwww! OK, maybe that was uncalled for, but I was startled by the ghost of Willie Banks.
  14. After watching he and Justin bomb them out during BP at will--when he was catching full time, (yeah, I know it's BP), I don't think Target Field is going to hold him back too much. At 6'5" and 230+ he made Morneausie look small (though on paper they are only 1" and 10lbs apart). So, I'm thinking Jason Werth-like with a better eye.
  15. Great article, and exactly the sort of thing I was looking for. Not sure why a "Cedar Rapids" search didn't come up with anything here on TD, but, oh well. Thanks for the loose invite, and I certainly hope to make at least one weekend trip down there this summer.
  16. I just have a feeling that with a fresh set of legs and (hopefully) many more games played that Mauersie will lead the team in HR's and well over half will be opposite field. I think it will be close, but I figure that he's the most consistent hitter hat this point, with Hammer 2nd. I'd like to think Plouffe, but I still think he's still on a short leash with his play at 3rd--can't hit 'em if your not playing. Kubes if/when he plays will be short on ABs and will be fed a steady diet of outside pitches that he can't catch up to anymore. Might see Arcia get close, but we'll see how he adapts to the pitchers adapting to him this year; I feel his SO rate will climb. Not coming down on anyone, just feel like I'm playing the odds.
  17. I didn't see a topic for this and the search didn't turn up anything, so..... Over the years, I've alway enjoyed hitting up Beloit for a couple games while en-route to either Milwaukee or Chicago for baseball road trips (or bluesfests, ribfests, really any excuse to see the country). Did you know the 1st bowling alley is in Milwaukee? I got the pictures. I haven't been down to Cedar Rapids yet, and was wondering how the trip/city was for that type of excursion. Is the area known for anything, or has anyone found an interesting byway on the way down from the TCs? Good places to stay, good places to eat? Brewerys? Speed trap country? All that sort of thing.
  18. Post a lot of places, got around to registering here. Seems like my Twins fandom has come full circle. Grew up (I'm 49) listening on the radio and after a 10 year stint as a 40 game ST holder, finally gave up my tix 2 years ago; not so much my unhappiness with the team, but more the front office and how they jobbed anyone who wasn't a full ST holder at Target Field, as opposed to the benefits we used to get at the dome. I get it, it's a business, but when they made their beds as "family entertainment" as opposed to "come watch the baseball game", I just wasn't going to play that game. Now the last few years they don't even have any OTA games, and I'm back to the radio. It's a shame really, because I love the game, but I'm not going to tolerate being a 10 year ticket vet and need to jump through hoops for an online lottery to maybe get home opener tickets, or be stuck not even being able to buy full playoff strips, not even going to get into the whole All Star game leverage BS they pull. Am I crabby about all that? Not anymore, just filling in the blanks for anyone who cares to read.
  19. Hmm. Been reading Aaron shortly after he started AG.com. How long ago was that? Re; where do I go to have drinks? About 50% of the time, whichever lot I'm parked in.
