  1. The BoSox only got 3 World Series championships out of Ortiz. The Yankees have over 25 World Series championship victories to their franchise name. So really, 3, in the grand of scale of things, isn't that many.
  2. Who would have thought when Mauer is playing well like we all know he can, the Twins also win? Good to see him playing well and great to see the Twins winning as a result.
  3. Maybe I missed it in this thread, but I'm surprised no one has mentioned the disagreement and fallout that occurred with Ortiz and the coaching staff prior to his departure. http://nesn.com/2016/03/david-ortiz-twins-treated-me-bad-before-i-left-signed-with-red-sox/ Ortiz was being taught to go the other way by the coaches in order to make him a more dynamic hitter. He of course had power, but the coaches at the time wanted to see him hit for average instead, which was the mantra during this time. He was hitting for power, but he wasn't hitting for as high of average, using the dome turf, as the team liked, and between that and subsequent injuries lost a lot of play time and was eventually ousted in favor of LeCroy as is well known here by now. In articles that have been published regarding Ortiz and the Twins since he left the organization, he commented on this saying he didn't understand the approach and to this day, still doesn't. I would say since he successfully changed his approach and is now a likely HoFer, his actions and performance on the field proved his notions correct.
  4. Souhan, like most of the other sports journalists in the Minnesota and midwest area continue to miss the point, and I do believe it is deliberate. Yes a lot of the players have been sucking it up in a variety of ways this year, but is this really the issue we should be focusing on and writing about? A systemic 6 year (and arguably 10 year) drought of of good baseball should not be pinned on players that have only been contributing in a major way for only a few seasons. Hughes, Perkins, and any of the other players you want to conjure up are symptoms, not the source of the problem. It would be nice to see some sports journalists in the area get some cajones and write about Pohlad and TR, but I can see why they don't. They want to continue to have open access to interviewing players, coaches, and front office people, rather than doing their job and writing truthfully about the greatest issues currently plaguing this franchise. Attacking the lowest hanging fruit is in their own best interest and not in the best interest of the fans that support this franchise and depend on journalists to correctly identify and scrutinize the real problems of the day. We are going to see months and months of players being attacked like this, even on a stretch of what is the most horrendous Twins baseball. Meanwhile the real problem will continue to go unnoticed and ignored by our own media journalists.
  5. 1. The night is darkest before the dawn. 2. Why do we fall? So we can pick ourselves back up again. 3 - 100. <insert any other pseudo inspirational quote from popular film to somehow rationalize this season>
  6. To the anonymous player that was angry about Bremer commenting on him during the broadcast, I say "too bad". There is nothing about the play we have seen from the majority of the players this season that should protect you from criticism. If you don't want to be criticized, then man up, play good fundamental baseball, and don't get sidetracked with what people say about you. Focus that energy on being a better player. Team record and team stats prove beyond all reasonable doubt that the team is playing lousy this season. I'm waiting to see something contrary to this. Dick and Bert are as fair weather as they come, they are not eager to call things out, especially Bremer, but the poor play and team chemistry has forced their hand and the hand of many fans to have no option other than criticizing the situation until we see something change.
  7. Nope, nor will they be only the 2nd team in MLB history to start 0-9 and make the playoffs. Was fully counting on both things to happen for a while there.
  8. This. TR only reluctantly took the job after Bill Smith had "overspent" and created a poor team in 2011. It seemed when TR retired originally, he was done being a GM and was fine doing a reduced size roll for the organization. It was only when Pohlad called on him to step in that he re-emerged as the GM. I think it's possible that he doesn't enjoy doing this job anymore and it shows. He retired for a reason originally, but he was semi-forced into this position. He didn't seem happy at all about having to fire Gardy. I've never seen someone so down about firing what was an incredible obvious thing to do, a 90+ loss 4 time repeater manager. He doesn't seem happy about having to make big changes, acquire new people in trades, or demote, promote, send players to different teams, etc. He just doesn't like doing any of it and it never has seemed since he has come back that he has enthusiasm about doing this. Maybe he is just a gruff guy that hates change or maybe it's the health problems he has been dealing with. Either way, he does have the job right now and the firing of Gardy, reluctant as it may have been, is what he may also come to the conclusion of doing, for himself. It might be the best thing not just for us and the franchise, but for him as a person. He never wanted this and I hope the Pohlads can respect that. The pressure and reliance on him from them may be what is keeping him there.
  9. This is a tough era to be a Twins fan. The comments by the owner do a great job of exemplifying this. He does nothing but instill feelings of doom and dread for our future. It may have been better for him to stay in the shadows and collect his money.
  10. Would it be unreasonable to hope, not expect, that Molitor pinch hit for Murphy in the 5th with bases loaded? At this point I just want something to get excited about and Murphy coming to the plate evaporates all hope instantaneously.
  11. I can honestly say I don't hate anyone either.. except Rick Reed.
  12. Danny Goodwin Todd Van Poppel Brooks Kieschnick Byron Buxton?
  13. Is Buxton going to be Hicks 2.0 or Hunter 2.0? Hunter got sent down a bunch of times before having an explosive 2001 season. Hicks.. never overcame his difficulties.
  14. You kind of have to accept this "losing culture" as a fact of life being a fan of Minnesota sports. That's not a complaint, it's a hurdle that we need to overcome every season and in every sport, something that makes the times we win, insanely more enjoyable due to the difficulty. We get a great season from one of our MN teams from time to time and it's fun when that happens, but inbetween those times, we see many years, often decades, of bad play and personnel moves. I always thought it had a lot to do with the lack of enthusiasm professional sports players have with coming to this area. We don't have as much to offer as the big cities on the east coast or the lovely weather on the west coast. We have hunting, fishing, and a chill group of people and have managed to get some excellent players that love those things, but it's few and far between to get some mega stars that enjoy all those activities. So we deal with what we got and make the most of it when we can. Not sure if that is true or not, but I can't think of a better explanation other than things "randomly" or "bad luck" seem to effect this area worse than the average and we have to wait longer than the average for championship teams to come along. 2 championships among all major professional sports since the 1954 Minneapolis Lakers. With the Lynx, if you want to include them, that gets boosted up to 5 championships in 60+ years. Lotta work to do.
  15. Sounds like a no brainer.
  16. They came up with the "Twins Way" admist the specter of contraction, losing for nearly a decade, and having their long time manager retire from the team. They needed something new, inventive, and creative, and the circumstances called for it. They had to win, they had to make a culture change, they were desperate. Now, they don't have nearly the amount of pressure that they once had to be imaginative and come up with something new, something the Royals and Giants have recently been able to do. They should feel the incentive, but for some reason they do not. They have their amazing new stadium, a money generating monster, they have a bigger payroll, even when things are going bad. They don't have to fear being contracted anymore either, at least for now. Yes, they need some incentive to have a fire lit under their behinds, but that has not come yet and keeping the same culture that they have had for the last 15 years is what they are opting for at every turn. I guess it is what is comfortable, and their doesn't seem to be an important dissenting voice within the franchise. I don't know what it's going to take, but I'm sure it will happen eventually. Since we can't or won't outspend our opponents, we have to be far more innovative than our opponents. Still waiting for that to happen.
  17. I don't think I heard any booing from the crowd after that abysmal lack of a sacrifice or a clutch hit. I guess it's fine to play like this for Minnesota fans?
  18. 2, 2, 2. Not going to cut it.
  19. I feel like I'm watching a Twins playoff game. Pitching somehow keeps it close, offense can't do anything. Playmakers we are used to making stuff happen look lost. No fire, no passion, just another loss.
  20. It's alright, still going strong for 161-1.
  21. 1. Buxton BA, OBP, SB - Most intriguing thing going into this season, may be giving this too much attention though 2. Sano/Park Strikeouts/HRs 3. Bullpen ERA K/BB rate 4.Team BA/HR total - Any improvements over last year? 5. Perkins K/ERA/BB - Watching this closely 6-9. Random Crap 10. Mauer BA, K, OBP - Almost don't even care anymore, still hoping he can bring back a stellar season that made him famous. Shock all of us Joe, cmon!
  22. The Twins will definitely win the Central Division.
  23. Dozier is the closest thing we have had to a Gladden type of support player on the team in decades. Pierzynski behaved the way he did due to self-interest and personal gain. He had a lot of passion, but it was misdirected and did not necessarily help the team as a whole. I think just by having Dozier around, it makes the rest of the team want to be better and play better and that is what makes him similar to Gladden. He may not rag on people's bloated egos to get them into shape the way Gladden did, but I think his passion for the game and his never quit attitude inspires the rest of the guys, especially now that we have a younger club. To think we at one time had guys like Gladden, Puckett, and Gaetti playing at the same time, 3 guys that always poured everything they had into their game.. Maybe it's a generational thing but it doesn't seem like we see many players like that anymore.
  24. Yeah, what I mostly was referring to was the medium average, high home run totals type player. McGwire also had a lifetime BA of .263 and he never won the MVP award because of this, although he came close multiple times. Killebrew is another hard hitter that is like this and he did manage to win the MVP award despite his .276 BA, but it's rare these days for someone to win with an under .300 BA. I have no doubt Sano should end up in similar company as long as his health holds up.
  25. Unless Sano improves his batting average by 30-40 points, I don't see this happening. He's more of a McGwire type, boatload of home runs, mediocre average. Still, it's a mini-show within a show every time he steps into the batters box.
