  1. Moving goalposts. At one point Sano weight 280 and vowed to lose 20 pounds. He then showed up to spring training weighing 260. I can buy it that he has put on weight since the season started, but this article states that they are "always working on it." Not seeing where the problem is. Every player on this team has something they are "working on" with the training staff!
  2. The Twins could do better by not sharing these concerns with the press. This is either clueless/careless or simply a bad tactic to be using at the moment since he is playing well. Probably the former.
  3. 83-84 wins seems to be right on the mark, a couple more if some of their opponents throw in the towel.
  4. If he has turned the corner, and I think he has, yes. I felt like it would take him a few months to get rolling this year, which is why I advocated that he start near the bottom of the order and work his way up. I feel like starting him near the top of the order slowed his progress down a bit. Nevertheless, he looks like the player we were expecting to eventually see. Let's hope the injury bug stays away!
  5. I think he makes the HOF simply because I don't expect many people who were better to be up for consideration during his years of eligibility.... Does he deserve it? Sure, but I understand the argument against.
  6. I have not seen anyone calling for the release of Colon since his 2nd start. He's here for the year and he might be back next year too.
  7. I haven't heard the laziness angle for a long time. It's certainly not fair to raise this year.
  8. It's timing. Not likely to change at this point.
  9. Yet another time Duffey's failure gets put on a different pitcher for the loss.
  10. Twins ticket prices are very reasonable, if not underpriced. Still looks like a good deal for fans.
  11. Chicago has incredibly good food, the best of any city I have lived in or visited. Hopefully the Twins are stepping out and experiencing that and not eating the food catered for them. I think when this happened in the past it was blamed on the catered food.
  12. Hasn't it happened more than once in the past 10 years where some Twins players got food poisoning when playing the White Sox in Chicago? The Twins need a food taster when playing this particular rival.
  13. Gibson has been pulled early in some games where he could have had a "quality start" as far as runs allowed is concerned.
  14. His contract is up at the end of the year. The Twins will let him walk.
  15. This loss isn't on the bullpen. You are not going to win many games with only 3 hits. Considering the pitching they were up against (who they should have been able to score on), the position players were probably a bit out of gas.
  16. It's a mathematical error. Indexing only works when things are counted once, such as in the various stock indexes. Would anyone trust the Dow Jones Industrials if it counted Apple and 3M four times each but Intel once? Do you see how Intel's value would be utterly irrelevant to the index in this scenario unless its value was at an extreme? The only "marginal" values that would register in this scenario would have to be extreme, and if the values are extreme they are certainly not marginal....
  17. The Twins make $37M/yr on their TV contract. Their payroll is $116M. If we use the premise that the Twins are spending 50% of their revenue on salaries, they are making a huge chunk of cash from their properties (which would include trademarks, advertising, mlb.tv, and the like, not just games, concessions, and events at Target Field). Even if you bump this to 80%, which is an unlikely percentage, they are still making more bank from their properties. The Twins TV contract is not unusual, the Twins are in the middle third of baseball when it comes to TV contract revenue, which suggests that most teams make most of their cash from non-TV revenue. Even the Yankees, who make $100M a year from YES, no doubt make at least that much from property rights including Yankee Stadium.
  18. I did not make a Sano/Vargas comp. I said they should try Vargas in the OF while he is in the minors, at least once, rather than throw their hands in the air and pretend they can't use him. Sano was used as an example of thinking outside the box by the team, not as a player comp.
  19. In the run-up to Target Field, the Twins were more forthcoming with their revenue and spending. They claimed they were spending 50% of the revenue on player salaries but pledged to spend more after Target Field was built. There is no way to know for sure but I suspect this promise was broken. To be fair, the Pohlad who made this promise is no longer with us and apparently the Pohlad family were very upset about the inheritance tax levied upon the family for the Minnesota Twins properties. I still believe to this day that the whole Ryan II debacle was the Pohlads trying to cut spending to earn their tax payments back which were reportedly in the hundreds of millions. In any case, in the great U S and A, employee salaries are 100% tax deductible. Conversely, whatever the Pohlads choose to pay themselves from Twins revenue is surely taxed at a very high rate. There is no good reason for the team to not spend on salaries. Pohlad can pay himself a few million a year and it won't affect the team's ability to get whoever they want in free agency. As for any "rainy day" fund the team maintains, this should have been amply funded at least 5 years ago, no?
  20. SDI takes the available existing defensive systems and adds them together. That's it. It is flawed because there is considerable overlap in what the systems measure, which means certain traits are counted multiple times and the systems were already weighing traits to start with.
  21. Melville was pointless. Someone in the organization -- I'm guessing Molitor and not Falvey -- overthought the whole 5-game series thing. The team did not need 2 extra pitchers to make it through the series, they needed one for the double header, and they had Gee for that. The only thing I can think of is they used Melville as Gee insurance, as someone they could move to the #5 spot if Gee failed. There was nothing to suggest Gee was going to fail, however. They were simply overcomplicating/overthinking things. They did not need to do an audition for the #5 spot with Gee on the roster already. If the Twins want to make it to the next level they have to stop overthinking/overcomplicating simple issues. They probably don't have any games to burn the rest of the year. If they want to get a look at their AAA talent, they can hop on the plane.
  22. I saw the full eclipse at a park that has a working farm just south of St. Louis. The mammals were oblivious to it, but the birds (geese, turkeys, chickens) were visibly distraught afterwards and were huddled around one another and seeking shelter. As the eclipse was straight overhead, I doubt the mammals saw it. The full eclipse does not look like what you see in pictures. It's very small. Think of the classic Mandelbrot image, but round. Or think of a small eyeball. This would have freaked out early humans to no end, with everything going dark and the sun being replaced by an eye that appeared to be looking at them. I doubt there was much drum beating as people suggest (it only lasts 2 minutes after all, which is just long enough to panic), but certainly in the days afterward there would have been a lot of rituals going on to make up for whatever they thought they did to piss off their god(s).
  23. Certainly, but you said he profiles to a future of suckage and then cited good minor league metrics as the reason. I get it, Vargas is a tough guy to figure out due to his multiple small sample sizes. Some of us think this means he will never be good, and that's fine. I'm in the camp of him needing a decent sample to make a decision. There are things he can do that almost no prospects can!
