  1. If the defense is unprepared for a bunt, bunt without mercy. Full stop. The bunt conversations on this website are 100% noise.
  2. It doesn't matter. None of the defensive systems used today consider errors in any meaningful way, and unless a run scores on that play, who cares? I don't buy the whole "the rest of the runs are not charged to the pitcher based on # of outs" philosophy. If the pitcher wants to control the outcome, he can strike the guy out.
  3. That might be setting the lowest bar possible. You may as well not even have a bar as the very tip top surface of it is flush with the floor. The bar is frigging invisible.
  4. Established players who have proven themselves v. non. Apples v. oranges. Hicks is 5 years in without proving himself.
  5. Looks like Hicks only played half a season. Grade: D+.
  6. He should make use all available resources (which includes his employees) to make the best decision. His job depends on making the right choices more often than not.
  7. This would be called "overthinking it." All contracts go through the person in charge, if that person is not paying attention and is rubber stamping, that's a problem. Is this what you are suggesting happened?
  8. Interesting stuff. There are 10 missing on the pitching side, are they all Ryan?
  9. He is punting to congress, and you can bet that the GOP congress will punt it to the courts. We have to get rid of these people.
  10. Calvin Griffith told us the Twins could not compete due to free agency. Terry Ryan told us the Twins could not compete due to increasing player salaries. Andy MacPhail didn't make excuses. He brought two championships with a rebuild in between. The jury is still out on Levine.
  11. Also, don't forget the Astros were still getting money from the league in 2014/2015 as part of their $70M package to move to the AL.
  12. But gosh, the Houston area is so much bigger than the Twin Cities. How can the numbers possibly be this close? Oh yeah, I already told you why.
  13. It's anecdotal that the Comcast's Houston sports network was "valued" at $550M but went quickly bankrupt and was sold to AT&T for $1,000? http://deadspin.com/astros-rockets-suing-comcast-over-failed-csn-houston-n-1710750462 As this played out, the Astros and Rockets had to pay Comcast something like $26M just to get their broadcast rights back. So that once shiny TV rights valuation of $550M was actually -$26M!
  14. Yes, we all know that Houston is a big city. And believe me, I had this conversation many times when I lived in Texas. To an outsider it seems impossible that Houston would be a small market for baseball. Nevertheless, Houston is not a big baseball town for various reasons.
  15. Time Warner still does not broadcast games. But yes, DirecTV and U-Verse now does.
  16. We can find articles calling Houston a small market team if we look. Local Houston media certainly calls them small market. I lived in Houston when the Astros were in the world series. There was little coverage and little excitement, and all this in spite of having several successful years. In areas outside of Houston for a while cable networks outside of Dallas carried both Astros and Rangers feeds. The Astros were dropped when the "Houston Sports Network" was launched, and even many Houston area residents could no longer watch the team. Spectrum (previously Time Warner) owns most of the urban Texas market and still does not carry the Astros channel, so even in Houston many fans can only watch Astros games if they go to the stadium. In spite of this, attendence for them is only 5k more than the Twins. And don't forget, the original Houston Sports Channel declared bankruptcy already. The network that was supposedly valued at $550M was sold from Comcast to AT&T for a mere $1,000.
  17. The Astros are considered a small market team. The Twins fan base is bigger. The Astros don't get the attention they deserve in the Houston area, much less in the rest of Texas.
  18. Houston gave up a LOT for Verlander. Dumb move.
  19. This will make some people scoff, but the entire pitching staff is better since Colon arrived.
  20. I never felt that Gibson was as bad as we were seeing, but yes I can't explain or defend his seemingly eternal struggles. It doesn't surprise me that he is pitching well. It doesn't change the fact that he is gone at the end of the year. The Twins should use him while he is pitching well, and I hope he has a good career in another uniform from next year on. Maybe the Twins win a playoff series or two and he is lights out in the playoffs, then they can consider keeping him. Beyond that, I wish him well. I expect he will have an OK career post-Twins.
  21. If I were running a team I wouldn't be too worried about the current options when the team goes 19-10 for the month with one game to go. The 2010 team you cited never won 19, possibly 20 games in a single month. I wouldn't call the September schedule "soft" but if the Twins keep rolling like they are, another 19-win month is not out of the question because the matchups look favorable overall. (Which might be unfortunate as this would give them the #1 WC seed, and the Twins play worse at home).
  22. I have this idea, check it out. Instead of using existing pipelines for Canadian oil which already pipe raw crude to refineries in Minnesota and Washington, let's make a NEW PIPELINE that goes all the way to Houston because Houston has superior impenetrable infallible infrastructure and refine the oil there! Yes, Canadian oil is high in sulfur and needs special refineries built. Yes these refineries already exist in the west and midwest, but we can build them in Houston as well. Why not? Texas has no income tax, favorable environmental laws, and we can pay the workers less money. This is pretty effing cool. Why didn't we think of this in 1955? Now we're stuck with those icky refineries in the Twin Cities. Ugh. Liberals! No worries, we can lay them off after the pipeline is finished. What could go wrong? Let's roll!
  23. Nevertheless, GGs have been awarded to players who played less than 30 games at the position. Which brings us back to what I said, it's a popularity contest. Feel free to take your argument up with the people who voted for Rafael Palmiero in 1999. You are shooting at the messenger because you don't want to admit that the GG is worthless.
  24. Some of those ranks are incorrect which you can check on your own. This was a down year for AL 1B defense, Moreland's rank in the MLB last year was 15th. The best 1B defenders in the AL last year were Byungho Park and Travis Shaw, neither of which were going to win the award over Moreland. So yeah, popularity contest. Remember, there is no minimum innings qualification for the Gold Glove, but a decent sanity check would be to use the pitching qualification of 162 innings at the position.
  25. It's not as tragic as all this. Buxton will be fine. If Twins fans still don't understand that it takes a while for most players to figure things out, that's their problem, not his. Did I ever entertain the idea that Buxton might not work out? Sure, but I also thought he just needed more time. He is zoned in and having fun right now, we should enjoy it too. Before the season started I thought it would take him a couple of months to get rolling, and I think starting him at the top of the order in April slowed him down. We can have this conversation during the offseason when someone plays the "regress" card.
