  1. I'm usually not too high on guys coming out of independent ball, but Tyler Palm could be worth keeping an eye on as a late bloomer. Went to a small school in MI, a small college in MI, then played in a small independent league in MI. Only 23 and stands 6-8, and added 4 mph to his average fastball in the past year. Small school guys from the Midwest sometimes need extra time to develop, and tall young pitchers have mechanical issues that need cleaning up more often than not. No walks in his first start are, well...a good start!
  2. "Inside the wide-ranging search—led by economists and psychologists—for the elixir that turns good squads into great ones." Interesting article from a non-baseball publication on attempts to quantify team chemistry (veteranness?) in baseball.
  3. Big believer in Thorpe here, too. In his start before this one, he gave up 9 earned runs on nine hits in 3.1 innings...but in the three starts previous to that, he didn't give up an earned run over 16.2 innings to go along with 19 Ks and just 10 hits/six walks. He's young and missed two full seasons, he's going to have plenty of ups and downs.
  4. I was at that game! Had outstanding tickets, too, but there's not really a bad seat at Petco. Great baseball venue, great food and beer options, too, if you're ever in San Diego.
  5. I'd guess Gordon is a victim of new guys moving onto the list as much as anything...guys like Kirilloff and Graterol. Seems like you could shuffle around the 20 or so guys at the back end of the top 100 most years, kinda depends on what you value and how you weight it. But yeah, the Romero omission makes zero sense.
  6. But it wasn't just Enns for Garcia. The headliner coming back to the Twins was Zack Littell. Twins Daily ranked Littell the Twins #11 prospect coming into 2018, and that's within a few spots in either direction of where most pundits rank him. Enns was more or less a throw in. I might actually like Littell more than Gonsalves. But yeah, I totally agree, Garcia for Enns straight up would have been an awful trade. Thankfully, we never made that trade
  7. There's plenty of noise in his load, but he's only 15 in that video and there's a lot to like in that swing. Looks like a great get.
  8. Nice write up! I've been really high on Thorpe for some time now and fully expect him to make a Romero-like jump up the prospect rankings this offseason.
  9. Rortvedt/Banuelos are both legit catcher prospects with solid defensive reps. Will be interesting to see how things shake out at the plate for the pair over the course of the season.
  10. So much of his potential is based on physical projection, but I'm a big fan of Watson and the trade that brought him here. Seems like he's really flown under the radar on these boards, but hopefully that won't be the case this time next year.
  11. I'm using the Twins 2016 Rule 5 Draft strategy, so decided to trade down for no apparent reason. I call this strategy Wild Card and I'm sticking to it. You can't really judge most trades until like five years later anyways. I'd totally be open to trading down again or being part of an additional multi-team trade.
  12. TRADE ALERT Hosken Bombo Disco and Ben Noble have agreed to a trade in principle, pending physicals. Disco will receive day one draft pick pitcher Tyler Wells and Noble will receive catcher David Banuelos, a second day pick, in a straight swap of prospects. Cash considerations were also part of the deal. UPDATE: Per sources, the two sides considered cash and, at the end of the day, decided that cash does in fact rule everything around me, cream get the money, dollar dollar bills you all. UPDATE: As expected, both Noble and Disco failed their respective physicals and the trade has been finalized.
  13. I’m gonna go ahead and draft Tyler Wells, but I’ll inexplicably trade him straight up to Mr. Disco for whomever he drafts tomorrow, even though I could’ve drafted that player now. Going with the Twins Rule 5 strategy this year.
  14. Does anyone know if he's projected more likely as a starter or reliever? Guessing they'll have him start as along as possible, regardless...
  15. Hell, at $6.5M base it's still probably a steal even if he gets on base closer to his career mark and jacks 20.
  16. I heard one of his tracks and, as someone who listens to a ton of hip hop/r&b, it was pretty awful. Maybe he's got better tracks out there, but I'm not willing to find out. That said, kudos to him for trying a creative endeavor on his off time and putting himself out there. I mean, he's a human being and we can't expect him to baseball 24/7/365, and he could just as well have spent that time watching tv or playing Pokemon or whatever. But I don't think anyone has anything to worry about when it comes to Nick Gordon's musical career taking him away from baseball.
  17. I desperately wanted Gore at the time of the draft...and still wouldn't hesitate to swap Lewis for him. But at this point, I wouldn't consider trading Lewis straight-up for any of the other three.
  18. Yeah, but he does hit LHP well, .921 career OPS, a gnarly .684 last year, but .954 in 2016 and an .821 mark over the past three years including last season's stinker. The question for me is, what would LAD give up to dump Kemp's salary if they're intent on signing Darvish? What would you want in return to take on about $30M for a part-time platoon player over the next two years? (Through a couple of previous trades, I think about $10M of Kemp's salary is already covered). I'd love it if the FO got creative and figured out a way to pry Buehler away from LA by both taking on Kemp and sending prospects back to the Dodgers, but it would probably take a significant haul. Maybe not as much of a prospect hit as Archer would require, though, with MN adding so much cash.
  19. I don't think the idea of a closer is in and of itself outdated...but I do think the value that many teams, managers and fans still place on the role of closer is definitely outdated. I agree with you completely about how to utilize your best reliever (Reed), but I still like having one guy in that defined closer role, and I want that guy to have the right skill set to succeed in that role. Kintzler is a great example that we're all familiar with of a guy with less-than-stellar stuff who slotted in well as closer. Rodney has less-than-stellar stuff at this point in his career, but I don't want to just go off of stats and honesty haven't watched him pitch enough the past few years to know how well his skill set matches up with what I want in a closer.
  20. Note that Lewis is named best defensive INF in the system. Opinions on Lewis' defensive acumen and where he'll eventually settle in defensively seem to be all over the place.
  21. What do you project happens with Rosario? Does he play himself out of a starting spot, or does he play himself into being traded for assets?
  22. Fairly certain that's Thorpe...but he still does look older in that photo than someone who just turned 22 in late November. Must be all the vegemite.
  23. I would think Watson could get there, too. There's a lot of room for projection with a skinny 6'5" 20-year-old lefty who averages over a K per inning. Looks a lot like Gonsalves on paper.
  24. You could make an argument for Miller having a greater influence than anyone else, period, on the game as we know it.
