  1. I think 4 years of 90+ losses earns some cynicism from the fans. I have no idea what the process was, but Molitor being the front runner and everyone else having to "outscore" him by 10 runs to win, does not seem preposterous to me. So, ya, some here are cynical. But, I don't know if they are right or wrong. Also, they are posting "I think", not statements of fact......
  2. Gotta go with young guys with options....on a team with so many questions at SP, imo, you need to be able to move relievers up and down.....I wouldn't care all that much if none of them came back.
  3. Good luck to him and the team. I'm not at all surprised by the choice.
  4. I'd think teams rank their players like crazy......if you don't have to give up a better player, then who calls first doesn't matter. So, do we really think calling first means you give up appreciably more than waiting to be called? What if no one ever calls you? You never make trades? I just can't believe this is an actual practice of any sports team.
  5. No, I'm looking at it from having been in negotiations in businesses, not from a video game perspective. And, there might be "some" effect, but really, how much effect? Should it really be some kind of principle a team actually follows? (not saying they do, but others have said that, I have no idea)
  6. Agreed, Rosario has a serious advantage right now....
  7. How much better of a player does a team have to give up if it calls first, instead of takes a call? Do people think it really makes a difference? If the Twins call first, do they give up a guy 5 - 10 spots higher on their list? I just don't buy it at all. I could be wrong, but it seems......not likely.
  8. I don't think it is lazy at all. I just think we don't agree on whether it really matters all that much in the end.
  9. Bunk on the leverage thing. The moment you ask for a guy, the other teams know you want him, even if they call first. IME, negotiations don't work that who calls first is at a disadvantage. Maybe in baseball it's different than what I've experienced in other lines of work, but I find that hard to believe.
  10. He's hitting .237 in winter ball? Man, I hope he isn't option 1 in CF next year.
  11. Letting Cuddy and others go, and replacing them with cheaper alternatives, while significantly lowering the budget? No, that doesn't really count to me. YMMV. That's not any kind of fact, just my feeling on the matter.
  12. I thought you did a great job on the interview. And I'm thrilled he gave it. We got about what we should/will get on payroll.
  13. Detroit went all in. They lost their bet. At least they made their bet. I'd rather that happen than wait 29 years to make the playoffs. Or even 6 or 8 years. Sometimes bad things happen even if you do good things.
  14. Until last year, it was. Last year they broke their mold. One point does not a trend make. If they do it again, then I'll go from wondering if they'll sign "expensive" FAs, to analyzing more how well they do it. Until last year, they pretty much went cheap/not at all. Last year they tried. I don't quite yet know how to judge last year. They got 1 medium/long term asset, one short term asset, and a bunch of really bad players (one of whom is signed for several more years, and could turn it around or not). I will disagree with you on one earlier point, I don't recall them signing a Cuban in the last few years, while some 15 clubs have* *someone posted that number last week, don't know if it is true or not
  15. No, playing young guys in a lost season to see what you have (have they improved or not) and to get them more reps is more important to the team. Hughes was pretty clear on his thoughts on that, and he agrees with me on that, actually.
  16. I'd be shocked if they go into the season with a $90MM payroll. Also, I'm personally (YMMV) pretty tired of the "we spent $80MM in FA this year" talk....can I say that revenue is over a billion dollars then? That's basically what it would be if we looked at the same time frame.
  17. It appeared Gardy was trying to get Suzuki his bonus money.....contrary to how Phil Hughes acted. It appears that way, based on comments. could just be that he wanted Suzuki to start a ton of games in September.
  18. While the precision of framing can be questioned....it exists. And Suzuki is not rated well at all. I would argue it is more important than base stealing. I do like the guys in the minors. One of the deeper spots, imo.
  19. Thanks to both sides of the interview for this, very nice.
  20. Their future budding stars are five or six years from being paid. I doubt signing good players now effects that.
  21. Uh, the Cards sign free agents, and trade for veterans. The point on being snake bitten, is that all players carry risk. Even sure fire guys that are supposed to be elite carry risk. My argument remains that they have failed to mitigate that risk, by signing bad players, and wasting money and roster spots on them. My argument is that I don't want to wait decades, I don't even want to wait six years. Others are willing to wait, but given ticket sales, I am guessing most fans agree with me.
  22. He was very good and patient. Don't agree having Bartlett on the roster, with Kubel and Guerrier, had no effect on the season. Bad roster decisions matter.
  23. Prospects get hurt. They fail. Waiting for them and ignoring other options, like cubans, to fill your roster, is a long, slow, process. It sometimes takes decades.
  24. It's the 2nd or 3rd most important job in his company (not counting players, where he seems to be staying out).....I'd expect him to be involved at this point. He would be for any other company he owns, I'd guess, at that level.
