  1. I've thought about this a lot the last couple days, waffling back and forth. Lots of good arguments made on this thread, both ways. I'm sticking to my earlier post. If I ran the Twins*, I'd keep him in the bullpen. I'd use him in the way that fireman used to be used to be used. I'd use him in the 6-8th innings, 1-2 innings at a time, in games where it was a close score. I'd want to get 100ish innings out of him. Getting 2/3 as many innings as most starters, but mostly in high leverage situations, would make him about as valuable as a good starter. Actually, I've been arguing teams should do this more and more, where pitchers pitch 2-3 innings max, and you plan to use 3-5 pitchers every game. Most teams don't have 4 good starters, let alone 8. They would greatly benefit by having guys that can pitch 2-3 innings at a time to go with their 3 good starters. But, that's serious outside the box thinking... *forgot to add this! It's good for everyone I don't. IIRTT.
  2. It was a joke. See my sig. And yes, he actually wrote something, I was lazy and pretty much just put it out there. I actually think Molitor appears to be acting this way this year, which if true, combined with less bunting, I'd not kill them for keeping him around. So much of what a manager actually does is hidden from us, that bullpen use and PH/PR use are about all we can really judge.
  3. Of course, there is a whole thread someone else started in teh MLB Baseball forum, that apparently no one that owns this site noticed....
  4. So much love for that article. so much good snark, great writing, and a good concept. The best part is near the end, when he shows how thinking this way would actually lead to better use of RPs. Right now, managers and players are incented to do silly things, because of the save stat.
  5. I'm also not convinced Grossman would be that bad again this year.....I also don't get why he isn't practicing at 1B every day...
  6. How so? offensively, he is putting up about 2 WAR as a DH.....that's quite high, actually. He put up over 1 WAR even being historically bad on D last year, something I doubt he could repeat. But as a DH, he's actually above average.
  7. That would make him about median for corner OFers....a 730-750 OPS. I'd take a median OF right now.
  8. But Grossman's success isn't driven by unsustainable luck like Santana's was. His fall was predictable. What in Grossman's success looks like luck?
  9. I'd say it's close. Another half year of this, and it's hard to say he's not this, imo.
  10. this made me laugh out loud. Nicely done.
  11. I'm looking, as KLAW suggested, for months of good outcomes before I can erase months of bad outcomes from my mind.
  12. I'm tired of being told that judging Buxton this early is wrong/bad/evil, as if the last 2 years didn't happen and we are just knee jerk loser fans. And yes, that's what is being said.
  13. Great stuff! thanks to Seth and the brothers for the interviews. Good luck to them.
  14. It's almost like the last 2 years didn't happen, and people are only judging these guys on this year. Not.
  15. Of course, we know that hitters are trying to hit "up" on the ball, and higher pitches inhibit that. Bert is rather stuck on this point, and has been forever.
  16. It's a waste to use Duffey in the role of mop up man. That's what Haley, Tonkin, Breslow should be doing, maybe even Hughes.
  17. I'd rather Rosario just hit, than DanSan ever PH for him (unless an injury occurred). But that could just be me...
  18. Well, we know with certainty that last sentence isn't actually true. Now, I agree, I would have sent him to AAA to be a starter. But, they didn't do that. IMO, jerking him around, back and forth, is a bad idea for him. Can they move him back to starter, if his change improves with time/work? Sure. But at some point, they need to make a decision.
  19. It's actually hard to believe this isn't in SI or the Strib.....great work
  20. when? he's not young, and going back and forth means you don't get to develop as a SP.
  21. There is some really good stuff here about how to best use RPs.....ignoring the snark (which I love) and if WPA or this are a better stat....lots of good stuff. This convinces me that Duffey should have the old time fireman role. https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/goose-egg-new-save-stat-relief-pitchers/
  22. Two inning reliever, as goose gossage used to be
  23. Wells is mentioned here (as is Palka): http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/instagraphs/daily-prospect-notes-417-and-418/
  24. Great stuff! Good luck to both of them, it's great to have dreams.
