Pump the Brakes On These Prospects
Mike Sixel replied to Greggory Masterson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
It's possible they sign crappy veterans also....or that they get hurt. This fear of even adding one rookie a year baffles me, especially for fans of a mid-market team with a budget.- 97 replies

I think they deal Gordon, but it is possible they deal Castro....but I think Castro has more defensive versatility.....speaking of that, I'd like to keep Farmer, since he can actually play SS.....but I don't know what they'll do. The did show, last year, how much they value depth......

I'll address the middle part about context. This is 100% why you don't take context into account....Here is a real life example. Luis Castillo had negative value to Cincy when traded. They weren't making the playoffs, and he cost real money. Each start for him was one they couldn't use on someone else to gain information about them. He had extreme value to Sea, MN, and NYY....as they didn't have 3 very good / great starters for the playoffs. He had less value to LAD and HOU, since they had "enough" starters for the playoffs. that's why you take context out, why you use some generic replacement player. WAR isn't about VALUE at all. It is a tool to measure the outcomes produced by players so you can compare the outcome produced. Here is another way it isn't about value / context. Burnes likely produces more WAR next year than Peralta. But, Peralta has A LOT of control left at a low cost. He's going to cost more to acquire than Burnes for those reasons. WAR isn't a tool for measuring that. It ignores that context. If you want it to do more than it is made to do, well, it won't, because it isn't made to do that.

Pump the Brakes On These Prospects
Mike Sixel replied to Greggory Masterson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Adley was held back for another year of control, likely costing Bal a playoff spot.....a lot of those guys should have come up sooner, which is kind of my point. And, they often go back down, meaning the sooner you get them up, the sooner they come back up....we'll likely disagree on this. I'm ok on this.- 97 replies

Pump the Brakes On These Prospects
Mike Sixel replied to Greggory Masterson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Did Wallner outhit what others did last year? I don't know, asking...because some guys dominated AAA, but no one trusts the STP numbers. I hope they never have to run out the 9th OF choice again either, that was unreal....but no amount of depth can handle that many injuries.- 97 replies

Pump the Brakes On These Prospects
Mike Sixel replied to Greggory Masterson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Nothing about Gallo over Wallner was right, imo. But thanks for the correction on the stats, certainly not how I recalled it. Still doesn't address the actual question....what would a guy have to do to "force their way up"? How awesome would a guy have to hit in AAA (especially since no one trusts the numbers)? Like, what could Martin even do if they sign a CF and Buxton is healthy and sometimes playing CF, but mostly DH?- 97 replies

That's a good question, especially since there is zero chance he's starting at 2B for the Twins unless they lose Julien, Polanco, Lee, and Farmer all at the same time. His future is in CF or LF, not 2B, imo. (though he can be a utility guy that also plays 2B). The only thing I can think of is...well, two things....they wanted him comfortable on his return, and they think 2B is harder to master so they had him working there. The third option is they think he's a 2B......which, um, then he'll be dealt at some point next year.

Pump the Brakes On These Prospects
Mike Sixel replied to Greggory Masterson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I understand many doubt Jeffers, despite his minor league hitting and what he did last year. The backup would be so they have three catchers more than anything else. I also find C defense to be over rated, but I get that others don't agree.- 97 replies

Pump the Brakes On These Prospects
Mike Sixel replied to Greggory Masterson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
IMO, if you deal Vazquez, you 100% sign a cheap backup catcher and plan to have Jeffers start 90-100 games. Like other elite hitting catchers.- 97 replies

Pump the Brakes On These Prospects
Mike Sixel replied to Greggory Masterson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
What does "force their way up" even mean? Julien and Wallner excelled at the MLB level in their first taste last year, and were sent down...... What would a player have to do, for how long, to force their way up? At some point, you have to trust your development process and move guys up. Few players are finished products in the minors or first or second year in the majors.- 97 replies

2023 Vikings Regular Season Thread
Mike Sixel replied to Vanimal46's topic in Minnesota Vikings Talk
I'll continue to be surprised if the Vikings win this week..... -
All paid to be backups.....which they were (other than Gallo). Are you paying Polanco 10MM to be a backup? If not, where does he start day one?

I'm asking, on day one, where does Polanco play? Solano was paid all of how much money to be a backup? That's my point....is Polanco starting day one, and if so, where? I feel like we are at a crossroads here, and it doesn't do anyone any good to continue. You feel they will keep Polanco without a defined position for 10MM a year, and I don't. I'm ok with disagreeing.

2019 is a long time ago for a professional athlete. Four years removed from the last time they really trusted him to play SS. I'll ask more directly, what position does Polanco start in, and who is benched because of it? They aren't paying him 10 million to be anything other than a starter.

I'm not surprised by Vazquez at all, and I've suggested trading him and signing a much cheaper C to replace him. They clearly need the salary space. As for Polanco, no one is trading a SP with more years on his availability for him. Especially not another team that is cutting payroll...... I'd 100% deal Polanco for C or SP prospect(s). Again, they need the money and he plays the same position as Julien and AK (though if they want to put Polanco or Julien at 1B, I'd be ok with that). Kepler is very unlikely to be dealty, IMO. The already need a CF / very good backup CF.....I can't see them opening up a corner spot at this point.
-
He's controllable for 2 more years, and I'm told the 10MM is a massive bargain......so, I'm not ignoring any context at all.

Or, they might hit less 2B and HR in their ABs and score less runs...... The team was MUCH better w/o Gallo and whomever at 3B when Lewis and Wallner were playing. Just that helps the team for a full year, most likely. Now add ANYTHING from 1B, and this is likely a top 10 offense (health, of course, being an issue). That includes almost nothing from CF.....

2023 Vikings Regular Season Thread
Mike Sixel replied to Vanimal46's topic in Minnesota Vikings Talk
How they keep winning at this point is absurd. The coaches, GM, and backups all deserve an insane amount of credit. Especially the GM and coaches. -
Those 26 guys need to play a position....and Julien and Polanco play the same position. I don't get how that's not a thing....you can't have, for example, 26 pitchers or 26 slow, plodding catchers. You want to have a deep farm system, you have to deal vets that are redundant....even when the team is good. Polanco can't play SS or 3B, other than in an emergency. He isn't a catcher, or OF. That leaves 2B, 1B, and DH......A team with budget constraints can't have a 10MM player that is a utility/bench player. So he's a starter. Where are you starting him? And if you are starting him, who is on the bench (2B, 1B, or DH.....Julien, AK, Buxton most likely). I'm ok if you want him at 1B or DH "full time".....but is that really the best use of him?

Or to add prospects you believe in.....there are plenty of reasons to deal him. We also don't know if he's going to be healthy, when was he last for more than 100 games (rounding up or down)? So, I'm dealing him for salary room and prospects. I understand those that want to keep him, but you can't do that unless you are moving him or Julien to DH or 1B....otherwise it is a waste of roster space for one of them.

If he's not worth a good prospect, he's not worth playing....If he's some really good hitter, then he's worth at least one good to great prospect.

The Positive of Reducing Payroll
Mike Sixel replied to Cody Pirkl's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I could see trading Vazquez and signing a cheap player. He's not really hit since 2019....OTOH, last year was his worst offensive year in, well, a long time. Is it decline, or was last year just not good for him? Me? I'd deal him, sign a cheaper player, and hope Camargo continues to improve and be ready next year to help/take over from the cheaper guy. I'm all in on Martin for CF. On the tiny chance Buxton is finally healthy, I'd rather not sign a CF and have Martin be utility with Castro next year. It is really about Buxton..... Severino? I'd had have had him up last year when AK was hurt....not sure why the team tried to keep AK up and playing...- 35 replies

I'm in no hurry to do anything....I just believe Polanco is bad at 3b and SS, and they can't have him and Farmer sitting around doing nothing many days......it's just not good asset management. Polanco brings back a very good to great prospect, IMO. They need those too, especially SP and C......If you get ride of Farmer, who backs up 3B and SS if Castro is your backup CF (or starter)? At some point, you have to trust your young guys....and for me, this is that point with Julien. IF they deal Julien instead, well, that wouldn't be the worst decision, but that's 10 million more a year for 2B than Julien, which is also an issue for this team, like it or not. At some point, you can't only have veterans making millions at every spot.
