  1. Yes I noticed this when he was called up. He had that trainer earlier this season, so I was expecting to see an individual the mass and girth of a David Ortiz multiplied by Pablo Panda Sandoval, with a dash of David Wells for good measure. But Sano is just big in a good way. Maybe more body fat that a typical big leaguer but able to carry it on that frame, and like you said, better resources for managing it when you're in MLB, I'd guess. Sano for presidente! Great thread everyone!
  2. Bi-lateral leg quickness?
  3. Paul Molitor, what a sense of humor you have, benching Escobar after he saved your ass last night
  4. It might help if someone within the organization, Mauer or anybody else, would acknowledge that maybe just maybe the old Mauer is never coming back. The sooner we admit that, the better, and then if we do get a great Mauer season again that will be a huge bonus. Send some signal, drop some talking points, drop him in the order, somebody do something at least before spring training starts again. I can get behind moving him to the outfield even though he is currently replacement level and probably a liability at any position as it now stands.
  5. Automate the strike zone, and everyone gets the same one, whether you are ben revere or Miguel Sano. The home plate umpire is still back there watching the pitch, like the article said. The umpire's clicker lights up and vibrates if the ball passes through the strike zone. The umpire then calls a strike just like he does now. No jobs are lost. Nobody even really notices anything different. I give it < 10 years.
  6. I'm also curious about velocity on throws to bases and throwing behind runners. It doesn't seem like Suzuki's throws have much zip, though I could be wrong. I also can't recall the last time Suzuki picked off a base runner (haven't followed all the games, I'm sure it's happened, etc etc) Suzuki does have some great intangibles, but do they balance out his slipping skills? Though I admit that's more of a question for the front office than Suzuki and not in the scope of this article.
  7. First of all, that's one fast horse......
  8. That is the crux of it. He is popular. No denying he delivered some key hits in the first half. Bravo to Ryan. But there are just too many good internal solutions now who deserve a shot.
  9. that's actually a better answer than my full time DH answer Honestly, I believe if Hunter is signed again, that will be a cue to me that apathy has permanently set in on the front office . There are so many good young players and dynamic possibilities for the outfield and so any other moves that must be made before next season that signing Hunter shouldn't even enter anyone's thoughts, barring something completely unforeseen.
  10. Only if he's a full time DH even though DH is also a clogged position.
  11. I also noted that discrepancy, that if (newer?) umpires are calling strike zones more consistently, then pitch framing might have less importance. I'm also interested in Suzuki's pitch calling. Seems like the Twins are near the bottom in allowing 0-2 pitches to be put in play. Our bullpen is at the bottom in strikeout rate. When Eddie Rosario came up, he seemed to have a very good eye for balls and strikes--until the count ran 3-2, at which point he swung at anything. And the opposing pitcher took advantage of that. Do we keep a book on opponents like that, and does that information get communicated all the way through to the pitcher when he's on the mound? I also wonder if the bullpen coach has that type of data during the game.
  12. and for my bluster,... isn't that the truth. shows you how far you get by being "absolutely certain" about anything
  13. Speaking of the Cubs, they've demoted Starlin Castro to the bench. Castro was the young phenom shortstop they extended for 7 years and 60 million just a couple seasons ago. Castro is no longer one of the best nine players, the Cubs need to win games, and thus Castro is not playing. He has not been in the lineup for the past 3 games. I would consider that the opposite of apathetic roster management on the part of Cubs management.
  14. I recently mentioned that the sun rises in the East. But then, my political opponent released a damning, heavily-edited video making me look bad, with irrefutable proof that the sun rises in the West. People are up in arms about this, and the media doesn't know who to believe! The nightly news reporter fact-checked the television commercial with my original claim, and concluded that the truth lies somewhere in the middle.
  15. Well, I'm a Mauer fan, not a Mauer basher. I think something creative needs to be done with Mauer, and soon. Can anybody here see him playing first base and batting second or third, for each of the next 3 seasons? Maybe Mauer and Ryan and the Pohlads can figure something out together. I honestly thought Vargas was outplaying Mauer at 1B earlier in the season, or at least not being outplayed by Mauer. Vargas has played 1B his whole life and can get better with time, like Morneau did. I honestly don't think Joe has developed an instinct for it yet, though. By the time he does, if he does, it will be the end of his contract. Going forward, who is the better bet at first base? And then, yeah, there's that other long list of problems. I would start on that by giving most of the catching reps in September to Pinto once he's cleared to play.
  16. It actually makes no sense at all to let Thielbar go, considering the guys we currently run out there.
  17. Never apathy. Not for me! This team collectively pulled the reins on this season. You could see it in Toronto. They need to come home and get it back together. Strong finish is everything.
  18. Great story about him here http://blogs.twincities.com/twins/2014/10/07/twinsights-passing-janet-thielbar-calebs-mother/ He had a great streak when he came up in 2013. I don't remember him pitching that horrible back in April. I'm sure he'll pitch in MLB again.
  19. This game is so out of hand that Molitor played Sano in the infield?
  20. Ervin Santana will pitch better closer to the end of the contract, when he's 38 or so.
  21. So contract-wise, what do you see for Pelfrey in the offseason?
  22. You could also compare Pelfrey's crispness tonight to an hours-old bowl of cereal; each soggy cheerio representing a Pelfrey fastball: http://blog.mirandala.org/wp-content/uploads/blog.mirandala.org/2011/11/soggy.jpg
  23. I can see it now, we'll have October baseball 2 years from now, it will be game 1 of the ALCS, Trevor May starting game one, and the ESPN broadcasters have to describe to the audience why May's nickname is "The Vulture"!!!
  24. whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa
