  1. We'll see. Danny Santana got four months to demonstrate he was the second worst full time hitter in the major leagues last year, ahead of only starting catcher Rene Rivera on the Tampa Bay Rays. I think the Twins could have at least tried Hicks in a platoon for a couple of months, tried Pinto at catcher for a couple of months, and then still traded Hicks in June or July for the same price of a backup catcher if he wasn't working out. The Twins see something in Murphy, so we'll see.
  2. Does Atlanta have some other shortstops in the system? Aybar has got to be in his 30s (which obviously is not a deal killer for a glove-first position, but still.) Andrelton Simmons seemed like one of those irreplaceable guys.
  3. I admit I don't know a whole lot about those guys Atlanta got in return. But that feels like a "trade Sano for peanuts" type of deal. Twins fans might question their fandom after something like that.
  4. Sarcasm noted before and after edit, thanks.
  5. 16 episodes already! I've only listened to a couple, none for a while now, and haven't gotten to the famous TR one yet (probably dated by now). Stick with it.
  6. NO WAY My impression of Simmons was that he was the next Ozzie Smith! What the hell? How do you trade a guy like that?
  7. What is TR thinking? I bet you, right now, coming on 5:30 PM, that TR is thinking about supper.
  8. You saw that that was a frown emoji, right? Not a smile or wink??
  9. Really good point. But I saw Hicks more as the calm 'yin' of that hypothetical platoon who actually split time 50/50 despite being on the natural short end, getting some starts vs righties when Arcia needed some cooling off or the when the matchup looked better with Hicks in it, for whatever reason, and then of course the late inning subbing when necessary. When in center, Hicks did not have a great jump on balls behind him, but playing in front of the shorter right field fences mitigated that. Anyway, it's all beside the point now. The Twins have their reasons for doing this which we are not privy to.
  10. Fun little summary. Very old school, like you said. Three interesting takeaways: 1. The Yankees had been negotiating for Hicks for weeks. 2. The Yankees claim they are taking advantage of the Hunter/Hicks mentorship season. 3. According to Cashman, the Brian McCann - J R Murphy starter-backup catching relationship was basically like the Favre-Rodgers QB relationship in Green Bay! (spoiler: I shouldn't have given that part away
  11. Admittedly, the catching position is the final frontier in analytics and very hard to get a grip on. There are intangibles such as Suzuki brings and they don't capture framing well, from what I understand. But sheesh wouldn't you like to see the guy show up a little higher maybe? There usually aren't many surprises at the tops of those catcher lists so you assume they give you a good general idea on a guy.
  12. I agree Buxton might make it opening day. Maybe even lead off. And Sano is more likely to play in the outfield now with Hicks out. The last thing we need is a Buxton-Sano collision in the outfield
  13. Maybe you are thinking of another source besides Fangraphs. Murphy caught 415 innings in 2015. When I filtered Fangraphs for catchers who caught minimum 400 innings, Murphy came up 42 out of 44 defensively. Equally as bad the previous year.
  14. But no if ands or buts... JR Murphy is da man
  15. This is exactly it. All you need to do is look at it from the Yankees perspective. They dealt a backup catcher for a not bad center fielder entering his prime.
  16. The Hicks trade is a great trade for New York. It may also work out for the Twins too. Time will tell. Great players are developed from within. Sano and Rosario have a chance to be great, so in that sense trading Hicks makes more room for those guys.
  17. And that's why the Twins should have given Hicks and Arcia a chance to platoon in right field. There's no reason not to try a platoon like that for a couple months, especially given the four months Danny Santana got.
  18. In terms of defense, Fangraphs rates Murphy down at the bottom with Suzuki, Pinto, and Pierzynski. So hopefully Murphy brings some intangibles.
  19. Get 'er done, Terry.
  20. Oswaldo Arcia is a far better outfielder than Kyle Schwarber.
  21. Here's another thing I don't get. Ryan and Molitor seem very serious in their concern for Sano's strikeout totals. Are they also concerned with Park and Palka's strikeout tendencies?
  22. Could you relink to that home run video for us?
  23. What is your opinion on what will happen with Vargas, Plouffe, Arcia, Hicks, Kepler, Walker and the rest? All those guys have value or at least some real potential, but no position to play. At least when Nishioka was signed there was a spot for him.
  24. The same people who are talking down Plouffe are the same people demanding a Jonathan Lucroy in a Plouffe trade?
  25. I actually think he will need significant time at Rochester. I base that on absolutely nothing except his home run highlight video on YouTube, and the Google measurement conversation page*. The vast majority of his home runs came on pitches in the 132km to 142km range. Browsing through, the hardest pitch I saw was 149km (92.5 mph), followed by a 146km and a couple 145km. Lots of off speed pitches taken deep, however, which is nice. I'm hoping he will become a decent deep threat eventually, about the time Mauer and Plouffe are wrapping it up. If the plan is actually to acclimate Park in the minors a bit, then this move makes a little more sense and it's very much in line with how the Twins operate, bringing guys along slowly. *h/t to Platoon for the idea
