  1. True, but they are losing their ability to persuade voters. Candidates do that themselves now.
  2. Honest question: Is there any reason to think the national political parties have much of a future? Trump and Sanders are neither Republican or Democrat and here we are. Trump is in the final stages of purchasing the votes of Republican voters away from the Republican party, and the Democratic Party is completely in the bag for Hillary this year. I understand how valuable the letter behind the candidate is, but who cares about the party apparatus behind it anymore? Anyone have any good links to some good analysis?
  3. Also, I find nothing depressing about the Twins center fielders since Kirby Puckett!
  4. I quit at 5 answers, 9:00+ minutes remaining, and the center fielder known by Yardbarker as "Torri Hunter"
  5. this is reality. Time to take the Wild Card game seriously.
  6. I concede that I can't find a scenario where the Twins make a deep postseason run in those seasons (which is an understatement), but there are other guys on the payroll like Hunter who might have improved the team and maybe made it somewhat exciting. Though maybe Hunter didn't purchase his smoke machine until this season?
  7. What mike said. Sanchez has pitched pretty good compared to other Twins free agents over this time.
  8. So you are saying Republicans should do what Democrats tell them to do. Finally! That makes me so happy!!! *also I think the language Biden used was a little more nuanced than the Republicans are claiming. Not that that nuance or shades of grey ever stopped a Republican congressman from opening his mouth before.
  9. The original poster was specifically requesting people to use hindsight. So why is Anibal Sanchez suddenly not valid?
  10. great job nick!
  11. Great article but that's quite an assumption. I'm not sure the Twins were destined to lose 90+ for all those seasons. Lots of people in the 2009-2012 time period were already discussing when to move Mauer out from catcher. Maybe the Twins part ways with Gardy a lot sooner. Maybe they invest in analytics earlier. But none of this really relates to spending on players, so I will bow back out.
  12. The Twins dealt Hicks, from a position of surplus, for a player Murphy who plays a position they are weak in. That's good enough for me at this point. I would have rather dealt Plouffe and tried a RF platoon with Hicks and Arcia but what's done is done. And yes what Brock and others said, I hope Murphy gets a ton of playing time pretty much immediately. Spring training might tell us which pitchers he pairs best with.
  13. Yes, I said "barring injuries" so yes I am assuming that no one gets hurt and Meyer starts in AAA. I see a lot of people flip it around and assume that players are going to drop like flies with injuries during spring training. True, Santana was suspended late last spring, but that was more of an aberration.
  14. Going with a 7 guy bullpen, here are Ryan's three locks: 1. Perkins 2. Jepsen 3. May Then there's: 4. Fien, and 5. The loser of the Milone/Nolasco/Duffey battle 6. Abad (people have presented some good evidence that he is likely to get a spot) That leaves only one more spot for everyone else, and Meyer has options. If Abad make the team, I would put the chance of Meyer making it at 1-5% but would be happy to be wrong.
  15. I based that opinion on listening to the Reusse podcast, on my unerring Terry Ryan mind reading abilities, and on the fact there are too many bodies on the pitching staff already (Ryan's 3-4 "locks", Tonkin out of options, loser of Nolasco/Milone 5th starter competition goes to the pen, etc) and frankly, there are better pitchers than Meyer at this point. Hopefully Meyer makes the decision difficult.
  16. Barring injuries, there is essentially zero chance of either of those guys breaking camp with the team.
  17. Nothing this team says about Alex Meyer ever adds up.
  18. I think you answered your own question:
  19. I still owe you a pair of tickets from our bet last fall
  20. I always thought Cedar-Riverside and Seven Corners were underrated, but sounds like you are too fancy for those neighborhoods? the best breakfast you might ever have is at Hard Times Cafe but the staff there comes and goes, so who knows. Hard Times is what Hell's Kitchen wanted to be before Hell's Kitchen went corporate. Hell's Kitchen still highly recommended however. If you need a hot dog or sausage and are feeling lucky there was (is) a place called The Weinery which gives new meaning to the phrase hole in the wall/greasy spoon. There are usually some good African restaurants but the Chinese places aren't recommended. If you get scared there is a Chipotle nearby. There are a couple good bars, a couple of modern sports bars, music clubs and small theaters. This is the area between downtown and the U of M. Feel like you are in college again. You only live once!
  21. Duensing is a good guy. He's also personal friends with Alex Gordon. This could really work out for him at least for this season. http://m.mlb.com/news/article/155676342/brian-duensing-supports-alex-gordon-in-series
  22. Mea culpa. I took a closer look at the Kepler photo Seth posted, and Kepler is clearly a guy who spends regular time in the weight room. As spycake said, my impression of Kepler last September had been the 6'4" 205 guy who couldn't fill out a uniform, but looks like I wasn't paying attention close enough. He is impressive. Too bad Sano is blocking him. Photo of Max Kepler by William Parmeter
  23. Kepler looks too willowy to be a five tool guy. I wonder how well the minor league power will transfer to MLB. At minimum I'd like to see him add some weight. There again, Buxton is built like a reed but can hit the ball a mile.
  24. I love Burdi, though I've never seen him live. He got demoted to A+ from AA which I assume is rare, but when he came back to AA at the end he was lights out. I'm not a huge list guy so I like having the one big list all in one page.
