  1. I guess at this moment in time I'd go with *checks notes* ... Cron? But I wouldn't have been seeking out a right handed first baseman only marginally better than what they had in the first place. That's kind of what I meant by "slippery".
  2. "What would you do different?" That's a slippery question. I liked their moves going into 2017, not so much since then, and I really disagreed with them blowing it up last July though I can see the case for them doing that. That has been debated. What would I do different? Well, doesn't adding Cron with Austin look a lot like the mistake they made adding Morrison last season, with Mauer already at first? So one obvious thing would be to part ways with either Cron or Austin before the spring games begin.
  3. MLB teams keep their books private. St. Peter has said television revenue does not restrict payroll. The Twins did not "maximize spending when contending" back in 2017. Nelson Cruz is still a free agent.
  4. Maybe we can attribute Rooker's strikeout rate to the jump from rookie to high A ball. Otherwise, there's no reason to be overly concerned (a little concerned, sure) about the strikeouts or to think the front office is gauging his strikeout rate first and foremost. And of course there are things we can only know about him or his swing from seeing him up close and not the stat sheet. But generally these are the types of guys they are targeting to acquire. Larnach had a steeper college K% rate than Rooker, for example. If Rooker shows even average aptitude at first base, I think we see him pretty soon and he becomes the guy in 2020.
  5. yeah I'm not optimistic either. I do think you're being hard on Kepler.
  6. I really think you're overstating by saying he needs to "dramatically" improve, especially considering the high K% rates of other guys in the organization. Maybe Rooker needs to improve a little, but he's developing, and I think he'll do that. The info in the original post showed a nice trend last season.
  7. On the other hand, "master every level" is not the answer for all prospects either.
  8. Yes. Rooker can hit. Great pick for a second rounder. These types of players appear in other organizations all the time. Guys who can hit. There's no reason the Twins should be different. Bring him up in May. If he's not ready, option him back.
  9. Another thing about Darvish's contract. It's not a steady $21 million per year. The first season was weighted more than the later seasons, leaving 5/101 remaining.
  10. Well, there was one report that the Dodgers made a similar offer to the Cubs. But yes if there’s one team on an island, bidding against itself, that is something to consider when talking about his market.
  11. Yes I realize it, it’s also irrelevant. Ok, so “lowball” and “unserious” are loaded terms, my apologies. But it’s perfectly fair to say the Twins did not make a competitive offer for Darvish. The offers were close in annual value (an educated guess), but it was 5 years, versus 6 years and all the extras.
  12. Well, that’s the market for these guys. It would be as if the Twins offered Machado 5/105, and then all of us praising the team for their willingness to spend.
  13. Come on, folks. The Twins offer to Darvish wasn’t even close to the Cubs offer. Cubs: 6/126, opt out, no trade, incentives Twins: estimated 5/105 at best with no other perks It was an unserious offer and at some point the Twins would have known that.
  14. The hitting coach isn't the problem. In 2017 Falvey wanted to send Buxton down to the minors. Rowson stood up for Buxton and Buxton responded.
  15. Great rally today after the Dolphins got close
  16. I would be ready to say that about both Buxton and the front office in 2020 or certainly 2021.
  17. Riverbrian, I am a million miles away from your position but will take that as a thoughtful reply. So thank you. As far as the win-loss records you kept reciting, I think there's a pretty strong answer there: the Twins piled up a lot of wins in September against divisional teams who were intentionally playing lesser players in order to improve their draft position in 2019 (or for whatever reason--not necessarily that). It's reasonable to think those games would have been won with the players Falvey and Levine traded away, too.
  18. why would you assume that? I feel you are being deliberately obtuse here. Please view the Buxton move in context. The word fragile doesn't belong here. In the offseason, the front office brought in a bunch of mercenary free agents (Levine's word, not mine) who cost the team some important games early in the season. In July, the front office traded their most popular player when the players felt they were finally making a rally in the standings (indeed, had won four straight games). Escobar's teammates saw the trade announced on the ESPN ticker. Dozier was traded days later. In August, Fernando Rodney was traded, prompting Ervin Santana to sound off against the front office, in turn prompting many fans to ridicule Santana for it (where do you stand on that one, by the way). All of that came before Buxton was snubbed. Edit: hoping that didn't come off as too harsh against the poster I quoted!
  19. A big, fat free agent contract for a starter would make that rotation more palatable, but as you and I know...
  20. I was about to say that O'Rourke's lack of experience is concerning. Then I checked and he's been a U.S. Rep; I had it in my mind he was a state rep. I bet he could flip Texas, but his youth might work against him in a campaign like that. But then winning a primary would be to pass a good test. I hope he runs.
  21. Sounds like Twins want to try Romero in closer's role, per Strib a couple days ago. Didn't want to start a new thread. I don't mind the idea but it's pretty rare to switch back to starting once you're used in short relief, and it seems like Romero was doing ok as a starter. Maybe they don't think he can learn that third pitch.
  22. Looks like Cleveland traded back for Carlos Santana. There's a tweet out there somewhere, I'm sure.
  23. This I agree with you on. Some media members like to stir things up, but it sounds like this was Buxton’s first visit back to the cities since then, so I give them a pass for asking and I give Buxton a pass for answering and expressing himself. From now on Buxton needs to just say it’s all in the past, and leave it at that.
  24. Ah, that helps explain why the Fox and the right wing continue to attack and smear her. Even Curt Schilling is getting in on it! Who needs Clinton anymore, I guess.
