  1. Not sure. Clinton was the first boomer president and certainly had appeal back in the day, and benefitted from Perot being in the race. Obama was Obama. Kerry and HRC were solid but very moderate candidates too. Neither of them shook things up too much or concerned themselves with the issues pushing this country hard to the right.
  2. I don't see how. Bill's election was a million years ago, and Obama's election was unique in it's own way -- as most of these things are, every four years.
  3. I hope and think Machado gets less than he expects, so I guess that means we agree, but whatever. I think the A-Rod /Stanton types of deals are a thing of the past. I don't think it would be a horrible mistake if Machado does somehow sign here, though. And for the record, Thad Levine and Derek Falvey were the first ones "screaming" about Darvish last offseason, then the fans got on board afterward.
  4. Seems odd that the front office would come out and announce extensions before the extensions have been formally agreed to by the players. We all have our preferred and less-preferred players we'd like to keep around, but even though I like Taylor Rogers, I don't think a Rogers or Polanco extension is going to fire anybody up or be considered a success as the LENIII article is implying. So let's hope it's one of the big names who gets extended, one of the names in the original post on this thread.
  5. me, again? ...I should have never taken that gig at the scarecrow factory...*mutters to self*...
  6. I have no problems with her being hard-working or hard to work for, but, "pick up Amy's dirty clothes off the floor and hang them back up for her" is getting into sketchy territory.
  7. A lot of really good reporting at HuffPost, but a counter-productive editorial lean that sometimes borders on the horrific. That's my opinion; not that anyone asked
  8. Good question. I honestly don't know. What is your opinion?
  9. Democrats campaigned on health care reform for decades. I'm not sure I'd trust them next time around to do what's right. A lot of the same Dems who were around in 2009 are still pulling the strings.
  10. The issue as I see it is that moderates on the left don't actually want lefty policies, and lefties who want lefty policy won't campaign as moderates. That's not how the left works. Trust me I would love it if a middle-left politician campaigned with a progressive dog whistle, like they do on the right, but they don't. Many on the left were hoping Obama was that guy, but he wasn't.
  11. I'm piggybacking on this comment. I think batters are just better than they used to be. Maybe pitchers don't throw many more pitches in a game than yesteryear (I don't have any data at my fingertips) but I think the game is just better, and a little more thought needs to go into those pitches. An extra few seconds for each pitch doesn't hurt an at-bat, but it sure adds up by the end of the game. I think the best way to speed up the game is to empower younger umpires to keep the game moving, and consider that when promoting them through the levels. Younger players will be accustomed to a slightly faster pace as they themselves are promoted. Nothing like an umpire pointing at the pitcher to get the batter's attention (or vise versa). I think it's already in the rule book that a ball or strike can be called for delay of game. That's to say nothing of when runners are on base. I am against any rule limiting throws to first, and I'm not sure how you would prohibit a pitcher from stepping off the rubber and resetting, which slows the game down. All that said, the pitch clock isn't really the eyesore I was afraid it would be, so that can stay.
  12. No, it was aimed at me, I own it.
  13. Granted, there was a point last summer where the Mauer retirement became inevitable. But as for young guys playing first, I don't know who is young, unless we're talking about Austin, Kepler or Sano, or counting 29 as young (Cron).
  14. 1. Congrats to the young guys going to their first Big League camp 2. Rooker listed as outfielder, which I guess makes three corners outfielders of Kirilloff, Rooker, and Larnach. 3. Lucas Duda? Not sure what this front office's fixation is with these types of guys. I agree with Danchat re Duda and Cron. And, didn't they also sign Wilin Rosario this week. Seems very inefficient to me. They could have offered Mauer a modest one year extension last summer to play one more year. I'd take a Mauer/Austin platoon (with some Sano and Kepler playing a little 1B too) over all of these other guys they have acquired since 2018 ended. That's just my opinion and I know people have disagreed. 4. Hurry up and get baseball started!
  15. Sources are now saying that Falvey is offering the kid the rookie cards of Nationals players Danny Espinoza and Tanner Roark, along with a 2017 Chris Heisley card, all of which were still available and for a much better deal than the Harper card.
  16. But what about those same prospects who then advanced and have hit well in AA? Wouldn't your percentages be higher for those?
  17. Or they could have kept all their good players, and competed for the division. Six of one, half dozen of the other....
  18. How quickly you forget the Trade Deadline Championship they won last July-August
  19. That seems to be the consensus on those guys. Opinions will vary and change over time.
  20. I'm not disagreeing with you or the other poster that Pittsburgh got a better (ahem, significantly better) return from Houston than whatever Minnesota was thought to be offering or willing to offer. The conversation for Cole never really took off here, not sure why not, since he was obviously available. I'd like to see the Twins play in this trade market, and frankly I'm surprised they haven't yet. Kirilloff, Larnach, Rooker, probably each of them could headline a trade for major league talent. The chances of all three making it are slim.
  21. In the Gerrit Cole example, the prospects mentioned were not "low-value" a year ago, and Pittsburgh was looking to shed salary. This was a specific situation. It looks lopsided to you in hindsight, but a year ago, it looked a little more equal. To your statement that the Twins fan's "main conceit ... is that if the Twins were just smarter, they could convert low-value minor leaguers into quality major leaguers" -- that is exactly what they did with Palacios and Odorizzi.
  22. It's possible. It's also possible that they are just very conservative with prospects, like the previous FO, and aren't pursuing trade talks like these. Hard to know. I doubt they "ran the numbers" and thought the offer wasn't any good. It's frustrating to me that they aren't playing in this particular trade market. It's my feeling (without any data) that it's ultimately going to be to their detriment to forego opportunities like those.
  23. Well that's the thing. There's no way of knowing for sure. Maybe when Thad Levine's tell-all memoir comes out, another 20-30 years from now.
