  1. Kind of ironic statement since Pinto was never on a top prospect list and Hicks has the 1st round draft pedigree
  2. One thing I have noticed about Mauer's play at 1B is he takes it to the bag himself more than anyone I've seen. Is there a reason he doesn't trust the P to cover the bag? That might burn him one of these days either by arriving too late or running into the pitcher. Taking it the other way is tied to the walks. Mauer can make decisions on whether to swing later. The longer he waits the more likely he is to walk. It also means he's unlikely to pull a ball.
  3. Same idea. Why not flip the roles of Escobar and Florimon?
  4. Not thousands, they gave a minimum 1500 PAs, just a couple hundred. He's batting 150 points higher than league average. If he tried doing it more often he would be less successful at it. Is the biggest criticism anyone can come up with for Mauer is he's too picky swinging at the first pitch? That's not much of a criticism. He's very successful with his approach. It certainly doesn't explain why people whine so much.
  5. Gladly http://www.beyondtheboxscore.com/2014/3/31/5560710/first-pitch-hitting He hit .484 with a .796 slugging on the first pitch.
  6. Yes, there is one guy who has a higher OBP than Mauer - you found him.
  7. Watching baseball for the post-game interviews is like watching porn for the plot and dialogue.
  8. He does. Joe Mauer has the highest average in baseball when he makes contact with the first pitch. He's just really picky because he knows he has to be right more than 40% of the time for it to pay off. The frustration for the Mauer supporters (and I'm one of them) is the Mauer critics keep suggesting that Mauer do things that would ultimately make him less productive and make the Twins lose more ballgames. They want him to hack more and walk less. They wanted him to move off catcher 5 years ago. They want him to throw a fit when something bad happens instead of acting like a professional. These are all terrible ideas.
  9. Is someone getting a callup to replace Mastroianni or are they just going to make do with infielders?
  10. Got it on the newsblog at Baseball Think Factory
  11. Also thrilled to see Mastroianni doing well. Get him up to the big leagues.
  12. There is certainly envy related to his salary but I think the easiest explanation is he's the only guy on the team anyone has heard of and the team is bad so therefore it must be all Mauer's fault. If you're the face on the billboard expect to get crap when the team is unsuccessful.
  13. I'm looking forward to the Angels series in September. The weather should be great and I wanna see Trout and Buxton from cheap seats in CF.
  14. RE Plouffe, he's been below average his entire time at 3B and that error makes me believe we will see more of the same.
  15. Disagree with Plouffe being average. He's already cost one game with a throwing error that an average 3B is able to complete.
  16. Be patient with minor leaguers. You should expect players to improve as the season goes on.
  17. One plus for MLB.tv on Roku - the free game of the day. If you just want to watch a ballgame and aren't particular about which one it's terrific. If the free game is a Twins game I have to wait but I can still watch it after it is over.
  18. Somehow I missed Angel Morales leaving the organization.
  19. I'm sure if you ask Pinto he'd rather be in the big leagues. He'll get playing time. He can improve his defense during practice. If he plays well he'll earn more playing time. If they wanted him working on his defense as much as possible it makes you question why he was a minor league DH 50 games each of the past two years. Colabello is going to pinch hit much more often than Pinto. With 12 pitchers they don't have a really deep bench.
  20. Only 104IP for Meyer last season. Will he be on an innings limit this season?
  21. I would think Parmelee plays 1B fairly often. Positional flexibility is what will get him on a roster as a backup.
  22. A bit surprised to see Turner jump all the way to Ft Myers. Hopefully that turns out better than Levi Michael.
  23. Good summary. Mauer is always fun to watch. Hicks, Arcia and Pinto playing well would be exciting. Nolasco, Hughes, Meyer and Gibson could be a decent rotation. It is a rebuilding year but there is hope that the team is better in September than April for the first time in years.
  24. Wouldn't surprise me at all to see a quick, short extension on Suzuki's contract
