    What makes you think Buster Posey knows more about catching than Derek Falvey (besides every shred of available evidence)?

    There's a backstory behind that comment. I grew up outside of town and didn't have many neighbors. We still played ball but there were only a couple players on offense and a couple on defense at any given time. First base was an oak tree and third base was a lilac bush. If you could hit the oak tree with your throw before the runner got there he was out. If you hit the ball into the lilac bush on the fly it was also an out. I figure Bell has more range than the oak tree but not more than the lilac bush. The bush was about 8 feet across at it's widest spot.

    Washington couldn't trade him last season at the deadline. The last two Josh Bell trades were August 1, 2023: Traded by the Cleveland Guardians to the Miami Marlins for Kahlil Watson (minors) and Jean Segura. July 30, 2024: Traded by the Miami Marlins to the Arizona Diamondbacks for player to be name later. Kahlil Watson is still a prospect - ranked #18 in Cleveland's system with a 40 FV. He looks like a utility outfielder. Jean Segura is retired. Miami ended up with cash considerations instead of a PTBNL. If the Twins want "cash considerations" they could just save the $7M and not sign Josh Bell.

    Who were the Twins bidding against that drove Bell's price up to $7M? I feel like they hit "buy now" for an eBay auction that might have been forced to sell for the reserve price.

    Counterpoint: Joey Gallo, Logan Morrison, Andrelton Simmons, Marwin Gonzalez. They do well about half the time.

    They signed the 37th best first baseman of 2025 to help them "compete". That's a terrible signing. Ty France (27th) and Kody Clemens (20th) both ranked higher than Josh Bell.

    I was really happy when they signed Bader - they identified a need (outfield defense) and filled it with the best available option at a reduced cost. In this case they identified a need (slugging first baseman) and filled it with one of the lesser options at a higher cost. If the Twins had entered the offseason with Josh Bell signed to a 1 year, $7M contract for 2026 I would have recommended they trade him to free up the cash.

    Which means their only chance at extending his contract is this winter. After this season they will not have any leverage and Jeffers can go elsewhere. An extra $2M for a signing bonus in this budget year could make a huge difference in extending Jeffers contract.

    If they let Jeffers walk because they spent $7M on Josh Bell I will be disappointed.

    It does preclude the other if they would rather spend $20M on three bad players every year instead of one good one.

    For the Twins, April definitely counts more. If they aren't in the race in July, then Bell will be on another roster in September.

    And he seems to do that every year. He has a 1 month slump, 1 month of awesome and is okay the rest of the year.

    I'm not sure it does beat using Kody Clemens as the first baseman. Clemens is the better fielder. It keeps Julien from getting playing time as the backup but it doesn't really improve the situation at first base at all. Raises the floor but offers no ceiling. At a $7M cost it means one less $3M free agent arm for the bullpen. Moves the win total from 70 to 71. All moving early did was cost them $4M. You can get leftovers as good as Bell at the end of January for less money. Move early on good players, wait out the market on marginal players. It might only be "an extra $3M" but if you do that a few times you're spending $12M extra on bad players that you could have spent on one good player instead.

    They gave him a raise?! Unbelievable. He made $6M, had a bad season and Boras got him a raise.

    It just shows what a poor athlete he is. He has the range of a lilac bush.

    I don't understand moving early to secure a contract with Josh Bell. He's another DH on a team full of DH. His sprint speed was 7th percentile (slower than everyone but Christian Vazquez). His arm strength ranked at the absolute bottom. He's been a below average defender at first for his entire career. It's an improvement on Edouard Julien but not much of one. I really hope this didn't cost more than $4M.

    I think I'd rather try Yoan Moncada than Josh Bell.

    I think Austin Martin is your best bet. He has played a lot of infield.

    The Twins will be in the running for the annual wins per dollar spent award again in 2026. I feel bad for Twins Daily. We all know there won't be any significant transactions until January 15 or later but they have to keep cranking out articles.

    He had options last year. Manny Margot got over 300 PAs because he didn't have options.

    They're much more likely to want someone in A-ball than Larnach in return for Mountcastle. Maybe Bohorquez or Olivares.

    This does not make me feel good about the Twins bullpen. Ohl was able to fool batters a couple times with that changeup but eventually they would sit on it and crush it.

    It doesn't really matter if Julien is named the starter. If he's on the roster, he'll get 400 plate appearances. Replacing Julien and Outman with better players is low hanging fruit for improving their overall win total.

    He's roughly 3 WAR better than Eddie Julien.
